End Conscription Committee P,0, Box 208 Woodstock 7915 Dear Friend The campaign to end conscription was launched in the Western Cape in November last year. A co-ordinating committee representing the following organisations and groups was established: Black Sash Womens Movement for Peace Civil Rights League Conscientious Objectors Support Group Western Province Council of Churches The Ecumenical Action Movement (TEAM) Methodist Citizenship Board Anglican Board of Social Responsibility Catholic Justice and Peace Commission Catholic Wir and Peace Group UCT Catholic Society (Kolbe) Students Union for Christian Action (SUCA) National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) UCT Students Representative Council United Womens Organisation (observor) Detention Action Committje (ADAC - observor) The committee, with a four person executive, has functioned to co-ordinate activities carried out by these organisations relating to conscription and militarisation. A recent initiative of the committee was to draw up a declaration. It is seen as a unified statement rejecting compulsory conscription into the SADF. We would like your organisation / you as an individual to endorse the declaration by signing the attached copy and returning it to the above address. JChe declaration will not serve as a petition. The intention is to distribute as widely as possible in order to publicize the campaign. In addition, the declaration will probably be released to the press. The name of endorsing organisations / individuals will be included on those declarations released for distribution. We look forward to receiving your endorsement. Yours sincerely David Schmidt (chairperson End Conscription Committee - phone: 651031) ■ .P1;. ' ":'V 'l-i :y.- - ... .-. • •'• • .. ' • ...... .. • . WD3 5NL U.K. Dear S i r s , Before we left Cape Town we filled in a form at Cavendish Square on one of your membership drives, but then left for the U.K. Our son, Matthew, is due to receive his papers for call up this year, as he has just turned 16. We are fiercely opposed to conscription, now that the troops are in the townships. We are endeavouring to remain in the U.K., mainly because of this. Please would you send us any useful publications you may have, and keep us informed of your activities. You can count on our support, we hope to be able to support you financially too, in a few months' time. Other than that you have our greatest admiration and encouragement. Public meeting - 'Peace in Namibia1 Speakers Pastor Kameeta? Archbishop Hurley? A Declaration to End Conscription We live in an unjust society where basic human rights are denied to the majority of the people. We live in an unequal society where the land and wealth are owned by the minority. We live in a society in a state of civil war, where brother is called on to fight brother. We call for an end to conscription. Y oung men are conscripted to maintain the illegal occupation of Namibia, and to wage unjust war against foreign countries. Young men are conscripted to assist in the implementation and defence of apartheid policies. Young men who refuse to serve are faced with the choice of a life of exile or a possible six years in prison. We call for an end to conscription. We believe that the financial cost of the war increases the poverty of our country, and that money should rather be used in the interests of peace. We believe that the extension of conscription to coloured and indian citizens will increase conflict and further divide our country. WE BELIEVE THAT IT IS THE MORAL RIGHT OF SOUTH ARICANS TO EXER CISE FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE AND TO CHOOSE NOT TO SERVE IN THE SADF. WE CALL FOR AN END TO CONSCRIPTION WE CALL FOR A JUST PEACE IN OUR LAND Endorsed by: THE BLACK SASH,WESTERN CAPE REGION, HAS ENDORSED THIS DECLARATION. WE ARE SENDING ALj, OUR MEMBERS A COPY AND HOPE THAT YOU TOO WILL FEEL ABLE TO ENDORSE IT PERSONALLY. ..r'-'-lIO-.glGN FOa JH.J P03T CF ECC OFFICE .a . .iKER Full name: Felicity wood. d•”ror-: 12, Crown street, Observatory.
