Record Fleet For The Series WW Summer Series 2015-16 Race 15 (20 Jan 2016)

What was a dull and rainy morning became a fine and sunny afternoon with a steady south south easterly breeze of about 15 knots – ideal for sailing. This was enough to encourage a record 42 yachts, including 4 visitors, to contest race 15 around the 6 leg 9.8 nautical mile course 61. Of the 9.8 nautical miles approximately half are to windward with the other half down wind.

The 42 yacht fleet got away to a good downwind start with 24 yachts starting within 20 seconds or less of their handicaps. It was one of the later starters, the Beneteau 45 CONQUEST (Paul Jacka) who won Start of the Day with a time of 2 seconds. The long beat on the second leg from number 7 to 5 offered an option of tacking early and staying closer to shore or going further offshore before tacking. It was difficult to decide which option would be the best. Staying inshore could offer flatter seas whilst there could be stronger winds offshore. With either option there were plenty of opportunities to find “clear air”.

The fleet started 54 minutes 46 seconds apart but by the first rounding of number 4 this gap had been reduced to 20 minutes and 22 seconds. It took 9 minutes 41 seconds for the first 10 yachts to round number 4 but only 10 minutes 41 seconds for the remaining 31 yachts (TRUE COLOURS retired) to complete the first triangle. By the end of the race the fleet had sailed further apart with 32 minutes 56 seconds between the first and last yacht to cross the finish line. However, 25 yachts finished within 10 minutes of the winner.

In her first race of the series it was the Bavaria 37 Cruiser CARRERA (Geoffrey Simpson) who was first across the finish line. CARRERA had started from 4th place 33 seconds late for a 20 minute handicap. She sailed the first 3 legs of the course in 1:15:06 she rounded number 4 in 2nd place – 3 minutes 13 seconds behind the leader PIPPA (Jeffrey Woolhouse). By the time CARRERA crossed the finish line at 15:47:49 she had been sailing for 1:57:49 the 28th fastest elapsed time. CARRERA became the 12th race winner of the series. She is not part of the

aggregate and sailed the race as a visitor

In 2nd place and finishing 13 seconds behind the winner was the S&S39 MAGIC (Phil Spry Bailey). MAGIC has sailed all 14 races this series after sailing all 23 races in the winter series. Her previous podium finish was in race 16 of the winter series. MAGIC started from 11th place, 21 seconds late for a 28 minute start. By the first rounding of number 4 she had improved her position to be in 6th place. MAGIC sailed the entire course in 1:50:02 and crossed the finish line at 15:48:02. This podium finish helped lift MAGIC 2 places in the aggregate from 8th to 6th with a total of 48 points.

The Hanse 40 BABYDOLL (Brendan Kruger) has completed 10 races this series for a total of 4 top ten finishes which includes 2 podium finishes. She started this race from 25th place only 10 seconds late for a 37 minute handicap. BABYDOLL sailed the first three legs of the course well enough to be in 9th place at the first rounding of number 4. She sailed the course in 1:43:29 to cross the finish line at 15:50:29. Following this 3rd place BABYDOLL moved up 5 places in the aggregate to be in 8th position.

As mentioned earlier Start of the Day was won by CONQUEST with a time of 2 seconds. This is the first time she has won the start bringing the number of Start of the Day winners to 17 which includes three ties. The median start time was 18 seconds almost 2 second over the average for the series.

It was a successful day for CONQUEST who not only won Start of the Day but also recorded the fastest elapsed time of the race by a margin of 48 seconds. Two Beneteau 367’s, LEBROK (Theo Korbel) and PRIMO sailed the course within 2 seconds of each other. The average elapsed time for the race was 1:52:15. This compares to an average elapsed time of 1:50:11 around the same course in race 1 but in a breeze that was about 2 knots stronger.

Thanks to Windward Buoy for keeping Mark, and you, up to date with the Wednesday Wonders racing. His information and descriptions do provide a real insight into what happens on Wednesday, even if you are 100’s of Kms away.

Are there big Stakes At risk? This information must have been about a very serious race. “I was stalled and could not get my yacht moving when another yacht came right at me ignoring my pleas that I could not get my craft to respond, and we collided.” Were there sheep stations at stake? I doubt this would happen in a Wednesday Wonders race. I hope not.

When the Boss is away the Secretaries Play. Instruction left by one yacht owner (and I think it might apply to a few others)… “I don’t mind if you sail my boat, just do not muck up my handicap.”

If was noted that The Secretary did not finish in what George claims is his permanent place of 10th, but in 9th place instead. The current skipper is claiming this was due to the five women on board all taking a trick on the helm …one leg each.

A 4 and sixpence worth No, this is not about the old currency. Mark is referring to the battle between Sm4 Wicked and Sm6 Stampede. Mark is so accustomed to seeing them hand in hand around the racecourse he thought they were inseparable, but with Mark missing a few races it all changed. They are not even starting together! Stampede is off 55 and Wicked 51. That is 4mins apart. They did get closer together around Number 4 the first time and just 2:28 apart, but a poor second triangle by Stampede and they finished 3:30 apart. I don’t think they will get much adjustment to their handicap with just a 30 second difference by the finish.

…Just in case you think that being a late starter makes your results unnoticed.

The cost of signing up for Wednesday Wonders Block Entry is likely to be reduced for next season.

This race saw 42-yachts racing. I do not think this means increased costs for a large fleet (apart from having to have 2 sheets for scoring.) In this race there were 59 yachts entered on the official sheets. 10 of these were visitors. This must mean a big increase in Wednesday Wonders income. Will it mean cheaper entry fees next season?

If not it is time to think up a few ways to spend this extra income.

Frank in the tower has some great ideas. The tower team had a very difficult task in identifying yachts finishing in this race. Trying to identify the many white yachts, and those with black sails and black numbers, is difficult. Who thought of black numbers on dark sails? Are they really gun running yachts operating under cover? It is particularly difficult with a downwind finish and yachts dropping their sails quite quickly. Very few of the fleet has any clear writing on their hulls to distinguish them.

Luckily for WWs the tower team know nearly all the yachts backwards. It is when they travel forward that is the problem. So some money could be spent on tracking devices to record start and finish times…such as are used in Olympic yacht classes.

The use of video replay and slow motion is very common in cricket and in tennis. Maybe SYC could lead the way in using such equipment in the tower.

We could also have a third umpire and ask for a video replay if we thought our placing was not quite right…again, just like for the tennis and cricket.

Is there a way you can make your yacht more easily identifiable? Well done to the tower crew for a great job.

Willarie: Crew wanted for a great little yacht. Unfortunately Ian Kaufman is having trouble with his shoulder, which will restrict his sailing - a sport he has been doing since he was about 8 years old. This leaves Graeme without a crew member for Willarie to sail regularly on Wednesdays. Graeme would like anyone who is interested to contact him.

Dolphin Play It is great to see that Dolphin Play has a new owner who is a SYC member. Maybe not racing this season but could be next season. Yea!... another not huge, yacht sailing at SYC. We look forward to John Brennan joining the WW races sometime in the future.

Carrera I did listen to Rowan’s s explanation about Carrera and Geoffrey’s handicap. I don’t think I quite follow the details of what he was saying though. Carrera’s original handicap was 27 but was reduced to 20. I gather someone thought the boat had shrunk in size. I would have thought with the rate Geoff changes his boats from power to sail it would have been more likely that he left a motor in his yacht rather than changing the length.

Emergency Call on your MOB Rowan did also remind skippers that emergency calls for assistance have a prot-a-call … Which means using your mobile if possible so the ambos can speak to the patient on board directly to assess their condition.

Quiz - Race 14 Question: These two photos are related. Can you tell Mark how they are related?

The lighthouse is the on the entrance in , and the machinery is for the G Diaphone type fog horn installed in 1929 just beside the lighthouse. It was resurrected in 2001. It still can send a vibration through your complete body if you get too close.

“…The magnificent roar of a thousands elephants echoed throughout the area”

The Low Head Lighthouse was built in 1833; it was replaced in 1888 by the present 21-metre brick structure. The fog horn is operated most Sunday's of the year, and for the Launceston to yacht race. It is the only operational G type Diaphone in the world. To hear the unique sound CLICK It is followed by a 5min utube demonstration

Race 15 Question If you grew up near Port Melbourne or South Melbourne many local ships would be well known to you. What ship is this and what ports did she visit on her normal run? It was built in Glasgow in 1934 by Stephen & Son (I am not sure that this makes it an S&S) She was only the third turbine steam ship to be built for the local area. She was capable of 18knt but was more economical running at 16knts. In 1935 she ran between Melbourne and a large Tasmanian town. In 1942 she was requisited for service as a troop carrier by New Zealand. Later she was one of the last troop carriers carrying 93,432 troops and travelled 204,535 miles. She returned to service in 1946 and had one of her funnels removed and the other one made higher. She did three crossings a week from Melbourne to three different places in Tasmania. Do you know which towns? She was withdrawn in 1959 and sold to Greek ship owners. A ship that could take more than 30 cars (and that did not have to be winched aboard) replaced her. She served in the Mediterranean as a cruise ship Hellas, until 1966, then after 23 years of being idle was broken up in 1989. 4286 tons, length 103 meters, breadth 15 meters, depth 7 meters (Her shallow depth enabled her to call at a major Tasmania town.)
