I do love my work. But neither my profession, nor my career, has anything to do with luck. My life, and my mindset, changed forever the day, as a boy, I was taken out to Hartz Mountain. From the summit, I saw a magical landscape that most Tasmanians didn’t know existed. For me, that moment started an obsession with wild places, and a desire to capture the drama they evoke on film. To the west, the magnificent jagged silhouette of Federation Peak dominated the skyline, and to the south, Precipitous Bluff rose sheer for 4000 feet out of the valley. Beyond that lay the south-west coast. I started bushwalking regularly after that, and bought my first camera. In 1965, I attended mountaineering school at Mount Cook on the Tasman Glacier, and in 1969, I was selected to travel to Peru as a member of Australia’s first Andean Expedition. The hardships and successes of the Andean Expedition taught me that I could achieve anything that I wanted.

Background: Donald Joseph Marshall was born in Wellington, New Zealand on 17 April 1935. In 1957 he moved to Sydney, New South Wales where he started work as a painter on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1966 he met and married Kerry in Denmark, Western Australia. He and his wife separated in 1985 but before then had two sons and a daughter. Mr Marshall worked at that time as a whaler out of Albany in Western Australia, and when that industry closed in 1978 he returned to his original occupation of a painter. In 1985 Mr Marshall started on a lifestyle that continued for the rest of his life. He put to sea in a boat called ‘Cimba’ and for the next five years sailed around Australia. He sold ‘Cimba’ and bought in turn the yachts ‘Nomad’ and ‘Aspro 11’.

    Tasmanian Geological Survey Tasmania Record 1998/05 Rock and gravel resources of King Island by C. R. Calver Summary The known gravel resources on King Island are limited. Material for road works is currently sourced from two pits (Reekara and Pearshape) operated by the King Island Council, and from a mine overburden waste dump at Grassy. Concrete aggregate is sourced from beach shingle on the west coast. The Reekara and Pearshape pits are known to have acid drainage problems. Mineral Resources Tasmania and the Department of Environment and Land Management have agreed that the Reekara pit should be closed immediately and rehabilitated, and that the Pearshape pit should be closed and rehabilitated within two years. Mining of the beach shingle, which is deleterious to the coastal environment, will also cease within two years. Thereafter concrete aggregate will need to be produced from hard rock. Future supplies of road construction gravel may continue to be sourced from the Grassy dump, from a new site at Counsel Hill, and from one or two other small existing pits. For good quality road sealing material and concrete aggregate, it is recommended that sites in Precambrian amphibolite east of Pegarah, and in Tertiary basalt in the north of the island, be investigated.     A: Community 2018 Bruny Life Community Survey – Respondent Comments My experience with the community has been very positive in that all BI's we have met have been helpful and friendly. I have been accepted and welcomed by many people on Bruny. There are all sorts of avenues for a new comer to slot in if you are willing to make a small effort. 99% of our community are amazing. The small amount of power trippers who try hard to intimidate people they haven’t even met are the reason why some of us don’t want to go to community meetings. There also needs to be a way working, flat out people and families can give input without having to attend meetings. I think social media would be a great way I have good friends but privacy/trust amongst the community is still an issue for me. The rumour mill/gossip can be rampant and damaging so it does stop me from fully participating and "putting what I think" out there. At times I think there is a lack of respect for a difference of opinion. Sometimes groups seem to have difficulty reaching agreement over matters - debate is healthy but sometimes it seems paralysing, disrespectful and damaging on a personal level. There have been some wonderful community leaders emerge. There are many positive social activities on the island that help break down barriers between people/groups/sectors of the community. It seems quite "us" and "them". If you haven't been an island resident for a long time or have a strong history with the island then you seem to be on the outer.
