New Zealand National Bridge Congress 2015

September 26th to October 3rd Daily Bulletin 6 1st October Editorial Staff : Mark Hangartner Session Times for Thursday Session 1 : 10 am Session 2 : 2.15 pm Session 3 : 8 pm Hi all, The elephant in the room is the “cheating scandal”, dare I say the latest one? Chris Mulley has written a short piece, so I have put together a background summary. As mentioned in a previous bulletin both Ron Klinger and Nick Jacob asked pertinent questions about investigating cheating. I don’t want this to overwhelm the bulletins but include it as there will surely be changes to the game to keep it clean.

Do you have a spare seat in your car going back to Auckland at the end of Congress? Or do you need a ride? Go to Registration to get put on a list.

The Daily Bulletin is extremely grateful to Babich Wines for their on-going sponsorship. Babich is a top quality New Zealand vintner. Babich Wines has been voted amongst the world’s top 50 most admired wine brands in a survey by Drinks International. Thursday, October 1, 2015 [NEWZEALAND NATIONAL BRIDGE CONGRESS

Grosvenor and Psyche W N E S Pass 3♦ X 3♠ Pass 3NT Pass 5♦ =

The lead: J♥ Here we go, yes the psyche form for 3♠ was filled in. No it wasn’t PB. His bid of choice is always NT. Apart from that the bidding and play were reasonably self-explanatory. North started trumps with her K. Oops I’ve created a loser, none daunted she gave up a ♠ and on the ♥ return took A♥,Q♥ ruffed low by West, yes! and now the loser has disappeared again. I think this may not quite qualify for Grosvenor but I can’t put sucker play in a heading can I?

W N E S 1♥ 2♥ Pass 4♠ Pass 6♠ = Bob Hurley tried the softly, softly approach starting with a double, then forcing twice more Evelyn should have done a bit more. The youth players, Steve Boughey here playing with Andi, andMatthew Brown and Jamie Thompson “Bid What They Thought They Could Make”. West loved the Michaels Cue, and East was just lovin’ it. Signals on a King lead at No Trump. W N E S Pass 1♣ 1♠ Pass Pass 2NT Pass 3NT = 1♣ Precision

The lead:K♥ .

There is no certainty of success here but a switch after the lead makes declarer’s task harder. North is hoping for an entry to put the ♥ through, everyone can see what is happening in spades. South may likely switch to ♣ or even ♠. Now declarer may be left with only 8 tricks. Well done those who found the defence.

6 Thursday, October 1, 2015 [NEWZEALAND NATIONAL BRIDGE CONGRESS Playing a different game – Chris Mulley Tony ‘Trevor’ Nunn is one of the top Australian players, but he is also a man of few words.Nevertheless, I have learned that when he does say something it really pays to listen. Consequently, I was very interested in his opinion on the recent revelations of cheating at the top levels of world bridge, and asked him about it on Friday. As usual Trev’s thoughts were incisive: “I don’t understand how they get any satisfaction from from winning; they’re playing a different game from the rest of us.” On Saturday morning another couple of pairs were revealed to have been cheating. I hate to say it but it seems as though Trev has been the one playing a different game.

The play is NS forcing declarer with spades while Justin played hearts to set up a good card to deposit dummy’s last spade.

After drawing two rounds of trumps but leaving the ♦9 in dummy, Justin lead a ♣ from dummy, South split his honours so Justin won and exited J♣. This is the end position with south on lead. Whether he plays ♠ or ♣ North will only score one trump trick, if a ♣ North ruffs but gives and discard or leads a trump to Q and best ♣. If a ♠ then declarer discards and either his 9♦ scores or ruff/discard as before. ♥ x ♦ J8

Book Review : Tips on Bidding: A Mike Lawrence Classic

Tips on Bidding: A Mike Lawrence Classic by Mike Lawrence Series: Mike Lawrence Bridge Tips Paperback: 286 pages Publisher: Published: 2015 (available from the bookshop)

Mike Lawrence has a great track record as a world champion and an author of accessible and sensible books.

He begins with 15 common errors, and you will find your head nodding in agreement as he outlines each one. He also offers solutions.Let me quote the solution to “Not knowing your partnership agreements”:

If you and your partner don’t agree on something, don’t just ignore it. Discuss the situation, get advice if necessary, and agree on the solution. Then write it down somewhere … Doing this will help cut down on your misunderstandings and you will get fewer silly results.

There is plenty of meat in this book, over 40 pages on reverses, plenty of example hands, a few stories, and every topic revolves around standard natural bidding or common conventions eg Michaels.

You may not agree with all the author’s tips.I found the long section on reverses overly complex. Nonetheless this is certainly a book any serious partnership would benefit from reading and using for fruitful discussions.
