New Zealand National Bridge Congress 2015 September 26th to October 3rd Daily Bulletin 6 1st October Editorial Staff : Mark Hangartner Session Times for Thursday Session 1 : 10 am Session 2 : 2.15 pm Session 3 : 8 pm Hi all, The elephant in the room is the “cheating scandal”, dare I say the latest one? Chris Mulley has written a short piece, so I have put together a background summary. As mentioned in a previous bulletin both Ron Klinger and Nick Jacob asked pertinent questions about investigating cheating. I don’t want this to overwhelm the bulletins but include it as there will surely be changes to the game to keep it clean. Do you have a spare seat in your car going back to Auckland at the end of Congress? Or do you need a ride? Go to Registration to get put on a list. The Daily Bulletin is extremely grateful to Babich Wines for their on-going sponsorship. Babich is a top quality New Zealand vintner. Babich Wines has been voted amongst the world’s top 50 most admired wine brands in a survey by Drinks International. No it wasn’t PB. His bid of choice is always NT. Apart from that the bidding and play were reasonably self-explanatory. North started trumps with her K. Oops I’ve created a loser, none daunted she gave up a ♠ and on the ♥ return took A♥,Q♥ ruffed low by West, yes! and now the trump loser has disappeared again. I think this may not quite qualify for Grosvenor but I can’t put sucker play in a heading can I? The youth players, Steve Boughey here playing with Andi, andMatthew Brown and Jamie Thompson “Bid What They Thought They Could Make”. West loved the Michaels Cue, and East was just lovin’ it. Signals on a King lead at No Trump. W N E S Pass 1♣ 1♠ Pass Pass 2NT Pass 3NT = 1♣ Precision The lead:K♥ . There is no certainty of success here but a switch after the lead makes declarer’s task harder. North is hoping for an entry to put the ♥ through, everyone can see what is happening in spades. South may likely switch to ♣ or even ♠. Now declarer may be left with only 8 tricks. Well done those who found the defence. 3 Thursday, October 1, 2015 [NEWZEALAND NATIONAL BRIDGE CONGRESS 4 Thursday, October 1, 2015 [NEWZEALAND NATIONAL BRIDGE CONGRESS Winners from the first 3 days. Consequently, I was very interested in his opinion on the recent revelations of cheating at the top levels of world bridge, and asked him about it on Friday. As usual Trev’s thoughts were incisive: “I don’t understand how they get any satisfaction from from winning; they’re playing a different game from the rest of us.” On Saturday morning another couple of pairs were revealed to have been cheating. I hate to say it but it seems as though Trev has been the one playing a different game. Bermuda Venice d’Orsi Bowl Cup 19 16 20 10 Thursday, October 1, 2015 [NEWZEALAND NATIONAL BRIDGE CONGRESS Justin’s endplay 4♦ from West The lead: 10♠. The play is NS forcing declarer with spades while Justin played hearts to set up a good card to deposit dummy’s last spade. After drawing two rounds of trumps but leaving the ♦9 in dummy, Justin lead a ♣ from dummy, South split his honours so Justin won and exited J♣. This is the end position with south on lead. Whether he plays ♠ or ♣ North will only score one trump trick, if a ♣ North ruffs but gives ruff and discard or leads a trump to Q and best ♣.
