Urbanization- Deforestation-Mining Environmental Science
Name: ______Period: _____ Date:______Essential Question: How do human activities such as urbanization, deforestation, and mining affect the lithosphere and the environment?
Use the picture on the left to describe the following:
a. Atmosphere:______b. Lithosphere:______c. Hydrosphere: ______
Urbanization is the physical growth of urban areas as a result of rural migration and even suburban concentration into cities, particularly the very large ones. Urbanization causes deforestation, eutrophication, ground water depletion, and many other types of pollution.
Rural Urban
1. Describe a rural area. Use the picture above! ______2. Describe an urban area. Use the picture above! ______3. How is the lithosphere and the environment affected by urbanization? Think! ______4. How could the exponential growth of the human population and urbanization impact regions throughout the world? A It could lead to a decrease in the amount of pollution in the regions. B. It could lead to deforestation and more pollution.
___5. How does urbanization change the natural flow of water? A. erosion caused by runoff is reduced and precipitation is increased. B. surface runoff is increased and infiltration is reduced
II. Deforestation is the "permanent removal of standing forests," as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines it. Deforestation affects the earth's physical environment by causing soil erosion, poor water quality, reduced food security, impaired flood protection and increase of greenhouse gases. Because forests are the source of employment and food for many people, their destruction can cause mass migration to cities. With the influence that tropical forests have on weather, particularly rain and the condition of the atmosphere, deforestation can cause global warming that leads to the melting of polar ice caps and climatic changes.http://greenliving.nationalgeographic.com/deforestation-effects-global-scale-2214.html http://conservationbytes.com/2009/02/24/cartoon-guide-to-biodiversity-loss-iii/
6. What is deforestation? ______7. How is the lithosphere and the environment affected by deforestation? ______8. How is the global climate affected by deforestation? Think! Plants use CO2 for photosynthesis. ( 10 pts) ______
III. Mining and smelting industries cause tremendous devastation of both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Mines and smelters produce large quantities of wastes like lead and mercury, that pollute both land ( terrestrial ) and bodies of water ( aquatic).
Lead can cause increase blood pressure and cause infertility, nerve disorders and muscle and joint pain. Mercury affect fetuses, infants, and children. The primary health effect of mercury exposure in the womb, can adversely affect a baby's growing brain and nervous system. Impacts on cognitive thinking, memory, attention, language, and fine motor and visual spatial skills have been seen in children exposed to mercury in the womb. Mines destroy the lithosphere by building tunnels or scrapping large amount of lands to get minerals and gems. Mining areas must be rejuvenated to restore the features of the land. 9. How are we affected by mining? ______10. Why is rejuvenation important? Think! ______
