Leisure and Cultural Services Department Report on the Extension Activities and Usage of the Public Libraries in the Wan Chai District

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report to Members on the extension activities organised and the usage of the public libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) in the Wan Chai District from May to June 2020, and the extension activities planned for September 2020.

Background

2. The LCSD provides a district library ( Public Library) and a small library (Wong Nai Chung Public Library) in the Wan Chai District. The Central Library, located at Moreton Terrace, is a territory-wide facility which serves as the backbone and major information hub of the Hong Kong Public Libraries System. It offers comprehensive and in-depth library services to the public.

3. In addition to the lending and information services provided, the two local libraries regularly organise various extension activities, including storytelling for children, subject talks and thematic workshops, book displays and user sessions. Activities such as Reading Programme for Children and Youth, Reading Club and Meet-the-Authors session are also organised to promote a reading culture.

4. The attendance of extension activities and the library usage during May to June 2020 are reported in Annexes I & II. The planned extension activities for the public libraries in the Wan Chai District and the Hong Kong Central Library for September 2020 are given in Annexes III & IV respectively for Members’ reference.

Remarks: (1) *Territory-wide extension activities (2) Members will be reported in the next meeting if there is any change of above-mentioned extension activities. (3) #In view of COVID-19 epidemic, public libraries were temporarily closed starting from 29 January 2020. The Hong Kong Central Library, Lockhart Road Public Library and Wong Nai Chung Public Library had once been partially reopened from 6 May, 21 May and 22 June respectively. All Hong Kong Public Libraries had resumed normal opening hours from 7 July. In view of signs of further deterioration of the epidemic situation, all re-opened public libraries are temporarily closed from 15 July.
