  • Plant Pathology Circular N0.263 September 1984
Plant Pathology Circular No. 263 Fla. Dept. Agric. & Consumer Serv. September 1984 Division of Plant Industry TAR SPOT OF MAHOGANY 1 N. E. El-Gholl and T. S. Schubert The genus Swietenia consists of seven or eight species and belongs to the mahogany family Meliaceae. West Indian mahogany, Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq., the first species described (2), is also known as Spanish mahogany or Madeira redwood (4,5), and is native to southernmost Florida, including the Keys (2 ,5), and some West Indian islands (2). The tree reaches a height of up to 75 feet (23m) (4) with a swollen or buttressed trunk and a much-branched, often spreading crown (2,3). Ma hoganies are handsome street and shade trees for tropical humid climates. They cast diffuse, pleasing shade and have an attractive spherical crown (2,5). Mahogany, among the most prized and beautiful of cabinet woods, is obtained from S. macro phylla and~· mahagoni (2). Of the disease-causing microorganisms affecting ~- mahagoni, Phyllachora ~wieteniae Petr. & Cif. (6) is considered a serious leaf-spotting fungus. Mahogany tar spot may render nursery-grown plants unsalable because of unsightly foliage and/or defol iation and reduce plant vigor by impairment of the photosynthetic process. c Fig. 1. Tar spot of mahogany. A) Upper leaf surface. B) Specks (clypei) on green and on necrotic background. C) Lower leaf surface. (DPI Photo #703018 by V. • The Natural History of Mahogany
The Natural History of Mahogany By Scott Herron Swietenia macrophylla and S. humilis are referred to as Mahogany, a tropical evergreen or deciduous tree that can attain heights of 150 feet. Mahogany is a member of the Meliaceae, which includes other trees with notable wood for cabinet making. Swietenia macrophylla is world renowned for its beautifully grained, hard, red-brown wood. It has been harvested since 1500 A.D. for its wood, with large branches being in higher demand than the trunk. This is due to the closeness of the grain in the branch's wood. Mahogany is used for furniture, fixtures, musical instruments, millwork, cars, ships, boats, caskets, airplanes, foundry patterns, veneer, and plywood (Hill, 1952). In Costa Rica, the only population of Mahogany exists in the Guanacaste-Puntarenas region where the tropical dry forests occur. Both of the species' ranges overlap in this region, with Bigleaf Mahogany, S. macrophylla, extending from the Bolivian Amazon up the Atlantic and Gulf Coast to Mexico, while Pacific Coast Mahogany, S. humilis, ranges from Mexico down the Pacific Coast to 9 degrees N in Costa Rica. The two species defy taxonomy and interbreed to form a hybrid. The hybrid grows quicker than either parent species, has intermediate characteristics, and high quality wood (Everett, 1982). Mahogany is never very abundant, even in undisturbed forests, with a density of only one tree per hectare. This, along with the destruction of tropical forests has added to the growing scarcity of Mahogany. The normal habitat of S. macrophylla and S. humilis is lowland tropical or subtropical forest, with average annual rainfall totals between 1 and 2.5 meters.

  • MAHOGANY SPLENDOR HIBISCUS Hibiscus Acetosella 'Mahogany
MAHOGANY SPLENDOR HIBISCUS Hibiscus acetosella ‘Mahogany Splendor’ Characteristics Type: Shrub Bloom Description: Red, Showy Zone: 7-11 Sun: Full sun, Partial sun Height: 3-5 Feet Water: Evenly moist Width: 2-3 Feet Leaf: Burgundy Bloom Time: Summer Attracts: Bees, Hummingbirds, Butterflies Culture Fantastic foliage with deep burgundy, maple-shaped leaves. Well-suited to the landscape, this colorful, drought and heat-resistant selection also combines well in containers with other sun-loving plants. Thrives in moist soils or even at pond's edge, yet is also tolerant of mild drought once established in the garden. Flowers appear in mid to late summer when plants begin their blooming cycle, producing flowers non-stop until the weather cools. The individual bloom is a velvety dark burgundy and opens in the morning, but lasts only one day, which is a common trait to most other plants in the hibiscus family. In the absence of rainfall, water an in-ground red maple leaf hibiscus in well-draining soil three to four times weekly, and ones in heavier soil once or twice a week. Monitor container plants daily and water them until water drains from the pot when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. The goal is to maintain evenly moist soil so the plants neither wilt nor develop root rot. Noteworthy Characteristics The deeply cut, red-margined, reddish-green leaves covering its slender branches form a dramatic backdrop for 2- to 4-inch trumpet blooms. Autumn's shortening days trigger the appearance of the dark-veined, pink or maroon blossoms.

  • Mahogany Furniture, Deforestation, and Slavery in Jane Eyre Elaine Freedgood
Souvenirs of Sadism: Mahogany Furniture, Deforestation, and Slavery in Jane Eyre Elaine Freedgood “The form of wood, for instance, is altered, by making a table out of it. Yet, for all that, the table continues to be that common, every- day thing, wood. But, so soon as it steps forth as a commodity, it is changed into something transcendent. It not only stands with its feet on the ground, but, relation to all other commodities, it stands on its head, and evolves out of its wooden brain grotesque ideas, far more wonderful than “table-turning” ever was.” – KARL MARX, Capital, vol. 1 “Thinking guides and sustains every gesture of the hand. .We chose the cabinetmaker’s craft as our example, assuming it would not occur to anybody that this choice indicated any expectation that the state of our planet could in the foreseeable future, or indeed ever, be changed back into a rustic idyll. The cabinetmaker’s craft was proposed as an example of our thinking because the common usage of the word “craft” is restricted to human activities of that sort. However—it was specifically noted that what maintains and sustains even this handicraft is not the mere manipulation of tools, but the relatedness to wood. But where in the manipulations of the industrial worker is there any relatedness to such things as the shapes slumbering within wood?” –MARTIN HEIDEGGER, “WHAT IS CALLED THINKING” “From today’s perspective, the subject of timber may seem a bit obscure, but to generations past it was exceedingly mundane. No contemporary resource can match timber’s preeminent ranking in the pre-industrial world.

HELLEBORUS (Hellebore, Lenten Rose) Rachel Hutchins and Melinda Zoehrer Beautiful and easy to grow, gardeners find winter-flowering hellebores or Lenten Rose are an enchanting plant for the shade garden and a harbinger of spring. Primarily native to Europe, the evergreen perennial comes in a variety of exquisite saucer-shaped, 2–4 inch flowers from flushed pinks to buttery Helleborus ‘Black Tie Affair’ Helleborus ‘First Dance’ hues to deep velvety black shades that can last 6–8 weeks. Hellebores’ serrated foliage rises on sturdy stems and often remains attractive throughout the year. Historically used as both a poison and a purgative, hellebores are deer and rabbit resistant due to their toxicity. Although known for their drought tolerance once established and the ability to survive neglect, hellebores grow best in evenly moist, well-drained soil. They are very sensitive to poor drainage. They can withstand a few hours of morning or late afternoon sun but perform best in part-shade or part-sun. Hellebores are a delightful addition to any partially shaded border or patio where their flowers Helleborus ‘BLT 02’ and foliage are on display when much of the landscape is still Helleborus ‘Flower Girl’ shades of brown and gray.
