CLINE: Revolution and Reconciliation: The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Protestantism, and the Civil Rights Movement, 1960-1970 (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) The Student Interracial Ministry (SIM) was a seminary-based, nationally influential Protestant civil rights organization based in the Social Gospel and Student Christian Movement traditions. This dissertation uses SIM’s history to explore the role of liberal Protestants in the popular revolutions of the 1960s. Entirely student-led and always ecumenical in scope, SIM began in 1960 with the tactic of placing black assistant pastors in white churches and whites in black churches with the goal of achieving racial reconciliation. In its later years, before it disbanded in mid-1968, SIM moved away from church structures, engaging directly in political and economic movements, inner-city ministry and development projects, and college and seminary teaching. In each of these areas, SIM participants attempted to live out German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exhortation to “bring the church into the world.” Revolution and Reconciliation demonstrates that the civil rights movement, in both its “classic” phase from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s and its longer phase stretching over most of the twentieth century, was imbued with religious faith and its expression. -

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2020 POEM/ESSAY CONTEST African Americans and the Vote 2020’s theme for Black History Month is “African Americans and the Vote,” as it speaks to the ongoing struggle on the part of both black men and women throughout American History. One of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1957 speech, “Give Us the Ballot,” aimed at increasing voter registration and advocating voting rights for African Americans in the United States while addressing key changes that would result in African Americans regaining voting rights. POEM CONTEST (Grades 1-4 ) Write a poem about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and include the phrase “Give Us the Ballot” from his 1957 speech which supported voting rights for African Americans in the United States. However, the heated national debate over comprehensive immigration reform calls attention to American history’s perennial themes: the peopling of the United States and the great vitality derived from the diversity of the American population. “Crossing Borders,” then, seemed the appropriate choice to be the thematic focus of this year’s meeting. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: DIFFERENCE AMONGST YOUR OWN: THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF LOW-INCOME AFRICAN- AMERICAN STUDENTS AND THEIR ENCOUNTERS WITH CLASS WITHIN ELITE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE (HBCU) ENVIRONMENTS Steve Derrick Mobley, Jr. Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor Noah D. Drezner, Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education Professor Francine H. Hultgren, Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership The subtle and deeply impactful nuances of Black intra-racial social class differences that manifest amongst students who attend historically Black colleges (HBCU) has remained untouched and understudied in higher-education scholarship. In this phenomenological study, I explore how low-income African-American students encounter social class within elite HBCU environments. The men and women in this study graduated between the years of 2001 and 2010. Contemporary HBCU student experiences are underscored and reveal great tension between self, community, and place. The philosophical works of Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer and Edward Casey are joined with the voices of Black scholars including W.E.B. DuBois, Audre Lorde, Frantz Fanon, bell hooks, and Toni Morrison to provide critical context for the phenomenon being studied. Max van Manen’s key phenomenological insights also provide a methodological foundation for the study. My co-researchers encountered significant shifts and evolved within their oppressed identities during their undergraduate years. During their undergraduate years they felt a difference amongst their own that they still reconcile today. The participants within this study endured feelings of alienation, wonder, and even confusion within their distinct higher education environments. This study concludes with phenomenological insights for myriad educational stakeholders that include higher educational researchers, higher education practitioners, families, and students. -

Toshi Reagon & BIGLovely “Whether playing solo or with her band, [Toshi’s] fusion of styles and forms draws listeners in, embraces them and sets them off in a rapturous, hand-raising, foot-stomping delight.” -RighteousBabe.com About Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely Toshi Reagon is a versatile singer-songwriter-guitarist, drawing on the traditions of uniquely American music: rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals and funk. Born in Atlanta and raised in Washington DC, she comes from a musical—and political—family. Both her parents were civil rights activists in the 1960s, and founding members of The Freedom Singers, a folk group that toured the country to teach people about civil rights through song as part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, is also a founder of the legendary a cappella group, Sweet Honey in the Rock. Toshi has been performing since she was 17 years old. Her career really launched when Lenny Kravitz chose her, straight out of college, to open for him on his first world tour. Some of Toshi’s proudest moments include playing for her godfather Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden, and performing with the Freedom Singers at the White House, in a tribute to the music of the civil rights movement. As a composer and producer, Toshi has created original scores for dance works, collaborated on two contemporary operas, served as producer on multiple albums, and has had her own work featured in films and TV soundtracks, including HBO and PBS programs. BIGLovely did its first performance as a band in 1996. -

Jimmie Lee Jackson and the Events in Selma On the night of February 18, 1965 a group of African-Americans gathered at a church in Marion, Alabama. Among those individuals at Zion's Chapel Methodist Church was Jimmie Lee Jackson, a Vietnam-War veteran. Fighting for his country, however, was not enough in the segregated South for 29-year-old Jimmie Lee to vote. He had tried to register, for several years, but there was always some reason during the Jim-Crow era to keep him from becoming a registered voter. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., people in Marion—a town close to Selma—met to talk about how to change things. Why should American citizens be denied the right to vote when the U.S. Constitution allowed it? There was a special purpose for the gathering on February 18th. A young civil-rights activist named James Orange, a field secretary for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, was incarcerated at the Perry County jail. Cordy Tindell ("C. T.") Vivian, a close friend of Dr. King, was planning to lead a group of around 500 peaceful protesters on a walk to the nearby jail. When the marchers reached the post office, they were met by Marion City police officers, sheriff's deputies and Alabama State Troopers who’d formed a line preventing the protestors from moving forward. Somehow the street lights were turned off (to this day it’s not clear how that happened). Under cover of darkness, the police started to beat the marching protestors. Among the injured were Richard Valeriani, a White-House journalist for NBC News, and two cameramen who worked for United Press International. -

What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing. -

Ep 5: Give us the Ballot CRA Newsreel 7/4/64 Now, in this summer of 1964, the Civil Rights Bill is the law of the land. Congress passes the most sweeping Civil Rights Bill ever to be written into the law and thus reaffirms the conception of equality => for all men that began with Lincoln and the Civil War 100 years ago. July 2nd, 1964, was a good day for Lyndon Johnson. Before an audience of legislators and civil rights leaders who have labored long and hard for passage of the bill, President Johnson calls for all Americans to back what he calls a turning point in history. The landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 was indeed a turning point in the country's long and bloody struggle for racial justice, and a hard-won feather in LBJ's cap. But important as it was, for the civil rights movement, it was only a beginning. Rhonda Williams African-Americans were under no illusion that the Civil Rights Act was going to be sufficient. Rhonda Y. Williams teaches American History at Vanderbilt University. Williams For them, it was not merely about integration -- about being able to sit in a restaurant, to ride on a bus, to get an equal education. It was also about how one could access political power to challenge the white political systems in the South, to make sure that African-Americans had the vote, that they had the ability in the political realm to make decisions about who represented them. This is something that Lyndon Baines Johnson, coming off of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, understood.
