Yes, your MP’s website (probably) does suck STEPHEN HUI, THE GEORGIA STRAIGHT Published on: December 2, 2013 If you look at politicians' websites as much as I do, you know that they are often devoid of up-to-date information and interactive features. Indeed, some politicians only seem to refresh their sites around election time. Samara, a Toronto-based organization that aims to improve political participation in Canada, visited MPs' sites in August and September in order to see if our elected federal politicians are taking advantage of the web's potential. Unsurprisingly, many are not. The group used a 14-point checklist to grade the sites. Here's Samara's overall findings: Members of Parliament are great at offering their constituents the basic information about themselves, but they perform poorly at offering ways for Canadians to engage with politics or have input on decisions and policy. While MPs’ websites, on average, include 7 out of 14 items on the checklist, only three websites checked off 12 items, and none encompassed all 14. Five MPs appear to have no website at all. Samara has summarized its findings in the following infographic. But first, a few interesting observations: B.C. MPs' websites tend to be slightly better than those of MPs from the rest of Canada. Independent MPs' sites scored highest, followed by those of NDP, Liberal, Conservative, and Bloc Québécois MPs. Just one in 10 MPs has a site featuring spaces for public discussion, such as comment sections on posts or online forums. http://www.straight.com/blogra/540111/yes-your-mps-website-probably-does-suck According to Samara, B.C. Communities that are facing the possibility of the end of their way of life are not looking to negotiate a better deal~ whether in the form of local jobs,higher royalties, or better safety standards. More and more communities are simply saying"NO". no to the pipeline, no to fracking, no to the export terminal,no to Arctic drilling, no to the coal trains, no to the oil trains.... neither here nor anywhere else. In other words... no new carbon frontiers. The Lax Kw'alaams First Nation already voted 100% against this project in May, despite an offer of $1.4 billion from Petronas. The Lelu Island Declaration was signed by First Nations leaders from across the Skeena watershed, as well as Grand Chief Stewart Philip of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, MLAs Jennifer Rice, Doug Donaldson, and Robin Austin, and MP Nathan Cullen, to protect the proposed site – and its salmon – from LNG development. Lelu Island has been occupied by Lax Kw'alaams members since August 2015, who have been working to prevent further work on the rejected project. June 29, 2016 Standing Committee on International Trade 6th Floor 131 Queen Street House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 via email: [email protected] Dear Committee Members: In recent months, there has been a great deal of debate about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) and what it means for Canada. The federal government has committed to a study of the agreement’s potential impacts on the Canadian economy; however, to date nothing has been made public, and we have been told no such study yet exists. How can the government possibly sign onto a massive international trade agreement without knowing the impacts it will have, or the potential consequences for the Canadian economy, the public and the environment? In fact, it would be irresponsible to proceed in this way. A genuine and independent economic impact analysis that considers all the implications of this agreement should be mandatory. Possibly one of the reasons for this failure to do an impact study is that the government knows full well that any benefits from the TPP will be marginal at best, while the damage done will be serious. A 2016 study from the C.D. Howe Institute predicts that the macroeconomic impact of the TPP on the Canadian economy would be a mere 0.068% growth in GDP by 2035. Perhaps even more interesting is that the study predicts only a 0.026% drop in GDP by 2035 if Canada does not ratify the TPP. This mirrors the recent US International Trade Commission’s study that showed that the TPP will increase the US trade deficit and will have almost no positive impact on the US economy.

We deeply regret to hear of the deaths of two workers from the mill. Our thoughts are with the entire community, particularly with the families of those who perished and the twenty two who were injured. At times filled with grief such as these, it is when we most rely on the strength and love of our community. As part of the greater British Columbian community we would like to offer our support. We are glad to hear that WorkSafeBC will be looking into this and will continue the call for action to prevent tragedies like this in the future. Bums Lake suffered a similar tragedy at Babine Forest Products early this year. The courage and commitment of that community to support the families most impacted is truly inspiring. We offered support in that tragedy and will continue to work with the mayor, the union and the company. Once again, we offer our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and co-workers at Lakeland Mills and to the entire community of Prince George.
