Drake and Florence A. Ruhoff Introduction A treatise of the generic names of the family Tingidae from a global standpoint embodies problems similar to those frequently encountered in corresponding studies in other animal groups. The more im- portant criteria, including such basic desiderata as fixation of type species, synonyms, priority, and dates of technical publications implicate questions concomitant with recent trends toward the clarification and stabilization of zoological nomenclature. Zoogeography, predicated and authenticated on the generic level by the distribution of genera and species, is portrayed here by means of tables, charts, and maps of the tingifauna of the world. This visual pattern of distribution helps one to form a more vivid concept of the family and its hierarchic levels of subfamilies and genera. To a limited extent the data indicate distributional concentrations and probable centers of evolution and dispersal paths of genera. The phylogenetic relationship of genera is not discussed. The present treatise recognizes 216 genera (plus 79 synonyms, homonyms, and emendations) of the Tingidae of the world and gives 1 Research for this paper was supported In part by the National Science Foundation, grant No. 4095. 2 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 112 the figure of 1,767 as the approximate number of species now recog- nized. These figures, collated with similar categories in Lethierry and Severin (1896), show that there has been an increase of many genera and hundreds of species of Tingidae during the past three- quarters of a century. -

Plerochila australis (Distant, 1904) has been reported as the species responsible for damage to olive trees; however, the diversity of olive lace bug species in the region has lacked attention. Adult olive lace bugs were collected incidentally from wild and cultivated olive trees in the Western Cape Province, and identified as P. australis and Neoplerochila paliatseasi (Rodrigues, 1981). -

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Technical Bulletin No. 1616, 100 pp. Six Eurasian species of Carduus thistles (Compositae: Cynareael are troublesome weeds in North America. They are attacked by about 340 species of phytophagous insects, including 71 that are oligophagous on Cynareae. Of these Eurasian insects, 39 were ex tensively tested for host specificity, and 5 of them were sufficiently damf..ghg and stenophagous to warrant their release as biological control agents in North America. They include four beetles: Altica carduorum Guerin-Meneville, repeatedly released but not estab lished; Ceutorhynchus litura (F.), established in Canada and Montana on Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.; Rhinocyllus conicus (Froelich), widely established in the United States and Canada and beginning to reduce Carduus nutans L. populations; Trichosirocalus horridus ~Panzer), established on Carduus nutans in Virginia; and the fly Urophora stylata (F.), established on Cirsium in Canada. -
A Systematic Study of the Genus Phytocoris Fallén (Heteroptera
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Gary Michael Stonedahl for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology presented on December 9, 1982 Title: A systematic study of the genus Phytocoris Fallen (Heteroptera: Miridae) in western North America Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: John D. Lattin The western Nearctic species of the genus Phytocoris Fallen were taxonomically revised. Over 15,000 specimens were examined. Information concerning host plant associations and distributions was compiled and summarized for use by future researchers. External morphological features and characters of the male genitalia were used to distinguish species. The genital tubercles above the clasper bases, claspers, and sclerotized process of the vesica were especially useful in this effort. These structures have been illustrated for each of the included species. One-hundred and sixty-two species of Phytocoris are now recognized from western North America. These have been arranged into 20 species-groups ranging in size from two to twenty-two species. The formation of species-groups was based primarily on characters of the male genitalia. Relationships between groups were cladistically analyzed. Forty-four characters of the male genitalia and external morphology were used to determine the final arrangement of species-groups. Forty-six new species are described, and the following synonymies are proposed (senior synonym first): acaciae Knight = minuendus Knight; calli Knight = laticeps Knight; deserticola Knight lineatellus Knight; empirensis Knight m rinconae Knight; fraterculus Van Duzee = westwoodi Bliven; fuscipennis Knight = longirostris Knight; geniculatus Van Duzee = blackwelli Bliven; interspersus Uhler = eurekae Bliven; juniperanus Knight = chiricahuae Knight, flaviatus Knight, santaritae Knight; ketinelbi Bliven = kahtahbi Bliven; knowltoni Knight = albertae Knight, elongatus Knight; maritimus Van Duzee = sequoiae Bliven; neglectus Knight = yuroki Bliven; nigrifrons Van Duzee = abiesi. -
(Other Than Moths) Attracted to Light
Insects (other than moths) attracted to light Prepared by Martin Harvey for BENHS workshop on 9 December 2017 Although light-traps go hand-in-hand with catching and recording moths, a surprisingly wide range of other insects can be attracted to light and appear in light-traps on a regular or occasional basis. The lists below show insects recorded from light-traps of various kinds, mostly from southern central England but with some additions from elsewhere in Britain, and based on my records from the early 1990s to date. Nearly all are my own records, plus a few of species that I have identified for other moth recorders. The dataset includes 2,446 records of 615 species. (See the final page of this document for a comparison with another list from Andy Musgrove.) This isn’t a rigorous survey: it represents those species that I have identified and recorded in a fairly ad hoc way over the years. I record insects in light-traps fairly regularly, but there are of course biases based on my taxonomic interests and abilities. Some groups that come to light regularly are not well-represented on this list, e.g. chironomid midges are missing despite their frequent abundance in light traps, Dung beetle Aphodius rufipes there are few parasitic wasps, and some other groups such as muscid © Udo Schmidt flies and water bugs are also under-represented. It’s possible there are errors in this list, e.g. where light-trapping has been erroneously recorded as a method for species found by day. I’ve removed the errors that I’ve found, but I might not yet have found all of them. -

ECOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENT Gargaphia decoris DRAKE (HEMIPTERA: TINGIDAE) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Science at Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand Cecilia María Falla 2017 ABSTRACT The Brazilian lace bug (Gargaphia decoris Drake (Hemiptera:Tingidae)) was released in New Zealand in 2010 for the biological control of the invasive weed woolly nightshade (Solanum mauritianum Scopoli (Solanaceae)). Currently there is scarce information about the potential effect of ecological factors on the establishment of this biological control agent. This study investigated: 1) the effect of maternal care and aggregation on nymphal survival and development; 2) the effect of temperature, photoperiod and humidity on G. decoris performance; and 3) the effect of light intensity on S. mauritianum and G. decoris performance. Maternal care and aggregation are characteristic behaviours of G. decoris. These behaviours have an adaptive significance for the offspring and are key determinants for the survival of the species under natural conditions. Maternal care is reported to increase the survival and development of offspring under field conditions, and higher aggregations to increase the survival of the offspring. However, in this study, maternal care negatively affected the survival and development of the offspring, and higher aggregations had no significant impact on offspring survival. -
