Males exploit female foraging preferences in a sexual context as females feed on the gift during copula- tion. It is possible for males to copulate without a gift, however strong female preference for the gift leads to dramatically higher mating success for gift-giving males. Females are polyandrous, and gift-giving males achieve higher mating success, longer copulations, and increased sperm transfer that confer advantages in sperm competition. Intriguingly, field studies show that ap- proximately one third of males carry a worthless gift consisting of dry and empty insect exoskeletons or plant fragments wrapped in white silk. Silk wrapping disguises gift content and females are able to disclose gift content only after accepting and feeding on the gift, meanwhile males succeed in transferring sperm. The evolution of deceit by worthless gift donation may be favoured by strong intra-sexual competition and costs of gift-construction including prey capture, lost foraging opportunities and investment in silk wrapping. Females that receive empty worthless gifts terminate copulation sooner, which reduces sperm transfer and likely disadvantages males in sperm competition. The gift-giving trait may thus become a target of sexually antagonistic co-evolution, where deceit by worthless gifts leads to female resistance to the trait. -

We investigated the effect of worthless gifts on mating success in the spider Pisaura mirabilis. Males usually offer an insect prey wrapped in silk; however, worthless gifts containing inedible items are reported. We tested male mating success in the following experimental groups: protein enriched fly gift (PG), regular fly gift (FG), worthless gift (WG), or no gift (NG). Results: Males that offered worthless gifts acquired similar mating success as males offering nutritional gifts, while males with no gift experienced reduced mating success. The results suggest that strong selection on the nuptial gift-giving trait facilitates male deception by donation of worthless gifts. Females terminated matings faster when males offered worthless donations; this demonstrate a cost of deception for the males as shorter matings lead to reduced sperm transfer and thus give the deceiving males a disadvantage in sperm competition. Conclusion: We propose that the gift wrapping trait allows males to exploit female foraging preference by disguising the gift content thus deceiving females into mating without acquiring direct benefits. Female preference for a genuine prey gift combined with control over mating duration, however, counteracts the male deception. College Rd., Wilmington, NC 28403 USA ABSTRACT The fossil record in North America indicates that considerable turnover in avian species occurred during a series of Ice Ages that began at approximately 2.5 million years ago (Ma) and demon- strates the impact of climate change on speciation and extinction in birds. Prior to the onset of these Ice Ages, recent research on early Pliocene fossil birds from Kansas has shown that specia- tion also can be associated with long periods of climatic stasis, indicating that mechanisms other than climate change may lead to diversification in birds. Fossils of seven living songbirds from the early Pliocene Rexroad Formation evince that diversification in longspurs (Emberizidae: Cal- carius spp.), pipits (Anthus spp.), and meadowlarks (Sturnella spp.) had occurred by this time, perhaps in relation to the concurrent formation of rich grassland habitats with high seasonal pro- ductivity in the mid-continental region. -

INTRODUCTION A. WHAT ARE NUPTIAL GIFTS? Nuptial arrangements in many human cultures include gift-giving tradi- tions (Cronk and Dunham, 2007; Mehdi, 2003), and this behavior plays an important role in the mating systems of other creatures as well (Boggs, 1995; Fabre, 1918; Gwynne, 2008; Lack, 1940; Thornhill, 1976; Vahed, 1998, 2007; Zeh and Smith, 1985). In species widely distributed across the animal kingdom, males transfer many different non-gametic materials to females during courtship and mating. Such materials can include lipids, carbo- hydrates, proteins, peptides, amino acids, uric acid, minerals, water, anti- predator defensive compounds, anti-aphrodisiac pheromones, and neuroendocrine modulators of recipient physiology. These nuptial gifts are an important aspect of reproductive behavior and animal mating sys- tems (Andersson, 1994; Thornhill and Alcock, 1983). However, when com- pared to more conspicuous sexually selected traits such as male weaponry or ornamentation, such gifts have received relatively little attention from behavioral, ecological, and evolutionary research. Nuptial gifts heighten male reproductive investment, thus limiting male mating rates and altering courtship sex roles and sexual size dimorphism (Boggs, 1995; Gwynne and Simmons, 1990; Leimar et al., 1994). Selection acts on both gift-givers and receivers to shape nuptial gift structure and biochemical composition, as well as gift-giving behaviors. Titanis Walleri: Bones of Contention

Quitmyer2 Titanis walleri, one of the largest and possibly the last surviving member of the otherwise South American Phorusrhacidae is re- considered in light of all available data. The only verified phorusrhacid recovered in North America, Titanis was believed to exhibit a forward-extending arm with a flexible claw instead of a traditional bird wing like the other members of this extinct group. Our review of the already described and undescribed Titanis material housed at the Florida Museum of Natural History suggest that Titanis: (1) was like other phorusrhacids in sporting small, ineffectual ratite-like wings; (2) was among the tallest of the known phorusrhacids; and (3) is the last known member of its lineage. Hypotheses of its range extending into the Pleistocene of Texas are challenged, and herein Titanis is presumed to have suffered the same fate of many other Pliocene migrants of the Great American Interchange: extinction prior to the Pleistocene. Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh. -

Informed by phylogenetic results from thousands of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and mitochondrial DNA barcodes, we revise the genus, providing a new morphological diagnosis and a species-level treatment. Analysis of UCE data from many Rasopone samples and select outgroups revealed non-monophyly of the genus. Monophyly of Rasopone was restored by transferring several species to the unrelated genus Mayaponera Schmidt and Shattuck. Within Rasopone, species are morphologically very similar, and we provide a ‘bird guide’ approach to identification rather than the traditional dichotomous key. Species are arranged by size in a table, along with geographic range and standard images. Additional diagnostic information is then provided in individual species accounts. We recognize a total of 15 named species, of which the following are described as new species: R. costaricensis, R. cryptergates, R. cubitalis, R. guatemalensis, R. mesoamericana, R. pluviselva, R. politognatha, R. subcubitalis, and R. titanis. An additional 12 morphospecies are described but not for- mally named due to insufficient material.
