C A N O E I N G AT THE 1960 SUMMER OLYMPICS

The 1960 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XVII Olympiad were held August 25 to September 11, 1960 in , Italy. Rome had been awarded the organization of the 1908 Summer Olympics, but after the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, was forced to decline and pass the honors to London. On June 15, 1955, at the 50th IOC Session in Paris, France, Rome beat out Lausanne, Detroit, Budapest (being the first city of the Eastern Bloc to bid for the hosting of the Olympics), Brussels, Mexico City and for the rights to the Games. There were: 83 NOC’s; 5 338 athletes (611 women and 4727 men); 150 events in 17 sports.

LOGO POSTER

They are the twin made up of a Roman shewolf, from which brothers who, according to legend, founded Remus and Romulus, founders of the city of the city of Rome. Between them, is the date, Rome, are suckling, on top of a column. On 1960, written in roman numerals. this, there is a victorious athlete being crowned in accordance with Roman custom; around him, people dressed in togas cheering him. Some 290,000 copies in 11 languages were produced. MEDAL On the obverse, the traditional goddess of victory, holding a palm in her left hand and a winner’s crown in her right. A design used since the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, created by Florentine artist Giuseppe Cassioli (ITA, 18651942) and chosen after a competition organised by the International Olympic Committee in 1921. For these Games, the picture of victory is accompanied by the specific inscription: "GIOCCHI DELLA XVII OLIMPIADE ROMA MCMLX". Something new: the medals in Rome were set in a circle of bronze featuring a laurel wreath matched with a chain also designed like a sequence of bronze laurel leaves. On the reverse, an Olympic champion carried in triumph by the crowd, with the Olympic stadium in the background. 2

N.B: From 1928 to 1968, the medals for the Summer Games were identical. The Organising Committee for the Games in Munich in 1972 broke new ground by having a different reverse which was designed by a Bauhaus representative, Gerhard Marcks.

CANOEING At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, seven events in sprint canoe racing were contested from 26th to 29th August at Lake Albano. Four changes were done to the program. First, the 10,000 m events that were raced from 1936 to 1956 were permanently dropped from the Olympic program, leaving all races at the 500 m and 1,000 m distances. Second, the women's K2 500 m event was added to the program, as was a men's K1 4 x 500 m relay event (though for these Games). Third, event timing in 1/100ths of a second at these Games. Fourth, a repechage system was introduced that was used to the 1996 Games in Atlanta at .
