3 4 Nature 2019 Humpback Whale season has started

Humpback Whale Season has started on the east coast, as a Humpback Whale (megaptera novaeangliae) was sighted inside 3pm, 10/05/2019. Its not uncommon for Humpbacks to stop over inside Jervis Bay for a few hours to a day on the Northern migration. The Humpback Whale was sighted 10th, 11th and 13th of May all inside Jervis Bay as last years 2018 1st sighting was 18th May so we are 10 Days earlier for 2019 season. On the 11th May the single Sub-Adult Humpback Whale was breaching, head slapping with a few pec slaps for over an hour as the Humpback travelled from Bowen Island towards Hyams Beach and onto Chinamans Beach to the north. The Humpback displayed visual signs of fresh "cookie cutter shark bites" nicknamed “demon whale biters”, and "light body scarring" all over lateral and ventral body. These are common signs of possibly being a "boisterous young" Sub-Adult Male. He is heading north early and stopping into Jervis Bay for a 24-48 hour stop over to rest from the long distances travelled on the northern migration. In Jervis Bay: May-July they migrate north; August they are heading north and start to turn south; September-November is the Southern migration with the last few sightings in early December. As the population increases the migration dates extend. If you see a Humpback Whale let us know as we could be on the water at the time. Common Composition Rules - Leading Lines Leading lines in photography are either man-made structures or found in nature. Anytime you have two opposing and symmetrical sides converging to an end-point, this leads the viewer’s eye ‘into’ your photograph. By placing a strong line, for example a bridge, railway track, row of flowers, circular staircase, road or anything that is only limited by your imagination and ‘eye, will create depth and perspective when the lines lead from the foreground to the background of your photograph. The lines also don’t necessarily need to be straight. Imagine looking down from the top of a spiral staircase. At the end of the converging lines, could be an object - sunrise, sunset, house, mountain, a person or anything else that your eye lands on and that will tell the story of your photograph. Raised-deck end cover plates. For the replacement cover plates, Ian measured and made up templates - first with cardboard, then with sheet ply - for the port & starboard cover plates Hull plugs. Paul measured, cut & shaped 3 hull plugs from Kauri.

Caulking. Barry continued to caulk planks at the bow. Plank sanding. Using a heavier-duty sanding disc, Stan put in more hard yards removing paint off stern planks.

Engine and propellor drive shaft alignment. After confirming with Steve, Neville and Barry today determined the correct position for the engine. Holes were drilled in the steel plates which support the engine and then, after use of gap measurers to confirm concentricity of driveshaft and gearbox/engine coupling, bolt holes were drilled through the timber bearers as needed. On this occasion, Jonathan Rogers was heard to lead his fellow shipmates in prayer, and a hymn, as their forward section of HMAS Voyager sank during the final moments before they died together on the night of February 10th, 1964. For this act of immense bravery, Jonathan Rogers was to later be awarded a George Cross Medal, which at the time was the highest honour able to be awarded during peacetime. The SSC, uses new and innovative strategies to support student learning and to maximise academic outcomes. Year 12 students have individualised learning programs developed in order to support them to realise their potential. The Senior Studies Teacher, Ms Ashleigh Tinkler, has created a welcoming and positive learning space for students, and she closely monitors their progress in efforts focusing upon academic growth and achieving success with identified goals. The SSC is open 5 days per week and students are expected to attend during their study periods, however they are also welcome at recess and lunch, and during their Wednesday Study Day. To promote a holistic and proactive learning environment, Woolworths Vincentia kindly donates fresh fruit weekly for our senior students to snack on while they study. The school has purchased the Edrolo Online Learning Program that can be accessed at any time, on any device, to ensure students can engage in valuable learning experiences 24/7. The Edrolo lessons are designed to engage students of all learning styles and abilities, and to provide excellent study notes and revision activities. The senior study schedule has been altered to cater for senior students’ individual needs. This year, their timetables changed to a 9 day fortnight. Wednesday is study day, in A week, for Year 12, where students are encouraged to attend the centre to study, complete assessment tasks and access teacher assistance to further enhance their learning. School excursions and incursions will also be organised on a Wednesday to minimise time away from the classroom. Student attendance on study day is compulsory if the student has outstanding N Awards to complete. Through these programs and initiatives we aim to enrich the lives of our students and cater for individual learning needs. At Vincentia High School we prepare students to meet the challenges of a changing world by developing their full potential socially, creatively and academically. #Learning for life
