Its not uncommon for Humpbacks to stop over inside Jervis Bay for a few hours to a day on the Northern migration. The Humpback Whale was sighted 10th, 11th and 13th of May all inside Jervis Bay as last years 2018 1st sighting was 18th May so we are 10 Days earlier for 2019 season. On the 11th May the single Sub-Adult Humpback Whale was breaching, head slapping with a few pec slaps for over an hour as the Humpback travelled from Bowen Island towards Hyams Beach and onto Chinamans Beach to the north. The Humpback displayed visual signs of fresh "cookie cutter shark bites" nicknamed “demon whale biters”, and "light body scarring" all over lateral and ventral body. These are common signs of possibly being a "boisterous young" Sub-Adult Male. He is heading north early and stopping into Jervis Bay for a 24-48 hour stop over to rest from the long distances travelled on the northern migration. In Jervis Bay: May-July they migrate north; August they are heading north and start to turn south; September-November is the Southern migration with the last few sightings in early December. As the population increases the migration dates extend. If you see a Humpback Whale let us know as we could be on the water at the time.
