It seems that the designation, to distinguish the movement from the activity of the Chovevei Zion, was first used by Matthias Acher (Birnbaum) in his paper “Selbstemancipation,” 1886 (see “Ost und West,” 1902, p. 576: Ahad ha – ‘Am, “Al Parashat Derakim,” p. 93, Berlin, 1903). Biblical Basis The idea of a return of the Jews to Palestine has its roots in many passages of Holy Writ. It is an integral part of the doctrine that deals with the Messianic time, as is seen in the constantly recurring expression, “shub shebut” or heshib shebut,” used both of Israel and of Judah (Jer. xxx, 7,1; Ezek. Xxxix. 24; Lam. Ii. 14; Hos. Vi. 11; Joel iv. 1 et al.). The people in the town of Chelm were not known to be the smartest, so this man felt he needed to make sure that he would remember who he was after he went for his dunk and was not dressed. So he came up with the brilliant idea of tying a red ribbon around his hand. Upon coming up out of the mikveh he looked down, and to his shock and horror, he didn't see his red ribbon. Looking up, he saw a man who had a red ribbon tied around his big toe. So he rushed up to him and said, "I know who you are, but can you tell me who I am!" The world has been bathed in an eerie silence which descended upon us between the holidays of Purim and Passover. When we all said, "Mah Nishtana Halila Hazeh," "How is this night different from all other nights?" the answer was so obvious that the question sounded rhetorical. Because of Israel’s complicated on-again, off-again diplomatic relations with regional powerhouse Turkey, “it hasn’t been able to do what many Israelis have ethically wanted to do — publicly recognize the Armenian genocide in the Knesset,” Prof. Hans-Lukas Kieser tells The Times of Israel from his office at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Last year Kieser was awarded the President of the Republic of Armenia Prize for his significant contribution to the history of the Armenian genocide. Indeed, it is not only the experience of the ceremonies of the Chag that make them exciting. Rather, when we analyze, consider and discuss why we do what we do when we do it, we become more aware of the purposes of the Mitzvos and the holiday and become closer to Hashem in the process. In the days of old, the public shiurim of Yom Tov were a major part of the celebration. The give and take the part of the day for Hashem, it set a tone – חצי לה' enhanced not only the part of the day identified as the half of the day set aside for celebration in eating and enjoyment of a חצי לכם for the other half, the different nature. Meals could be enjoyed where conversation would surround “what the Rabbi spoke about” and expansion on those ideas would be shared and discussed with everyone present, each at his or her own level. Unfortunately, with the difficulties presented by the current COVID-19 pandemic, many might not be able to make it to Shul, many Rabbis might not be able to present the same Derashos and Shiurim to all the different minyanim under their auspices. -

The debate over Jewish employment structure in the Journal for Demography and Statistics of the Jews (1905-1931) Nicolas Vallois1 Abstract The late 19th century saw the multiplication of statistical studies on the Jewish populations. This literature is now known as “Jewish Statistics” or “Jewish Social Science” (hereafter JSS). This article focuses on the articles published in der Zeitschrift für Demographie und Statistik der Juden (Journal for Demography and Statistics of the Jews, hereafter ZDSJ). The ZDSJ was the main journal in JSS and appeared from 1905 until 1931. Existing scholarship on Jewish statistics has either focused on the influence of Zionism (Hart, 2000) or eugenics and race theory (Efron, 1994). Our claim is that JSS can also be related to the history of economic thought and treated as an early type of empirical economics. The main economic concern in JSS was the question of Jewish “occupational” or employment structure: Jews were seen as excessively concentrated in commercial activities, thus raising a debate over Jewish “productivization”, i.e. on whether and how an occupational shift from commerce to industry and agriculture could occur (Kahan, 1986, p.43). As suggests both the intellectual profile of the main contributors to the ZDSJ, and the academic ambition of the journal, we argue that JSS was a by-product of the German historical school in economics. We then analyze the way the ZDSJ contributed to the debate on Jewish “productivization”. Numbers played an ambivalent role in this discussion: though contributors to the ZDSJ were certainly committed toward empirical rigor, statistics served also apologetic purposes, to disprove antisemitic claims about Jewish economic behavior, while Jewish statisticians themselves were not themselves free from economic stereotypes. -

Jews of Galicia: A History Prof. Joshua Shanes Email: [email protected] Teacher Assistant: Natali Beige Email: [email protected] Course Description: In 1939, on the eve of the Holocaust, East European Jewry constituted the most important and influential Jewish community in the world. As a result of half a century of mass migration to the West, up to 90% of world Jewry either lived in Eastern Europe or were children of east European immigrants. Although scholarship and popular memory typically equate Eastern Europe with the Russian Empire, in fact Jews in the eastern Austrian empire – in Galicia and Bukowina – numbered one million souls by the Holocaust, plus hundreds of thousands of emigres throughout the world. Moreover, despite the popular image of the cunning, coarse, fanatical “Galitsyaners,” Galicia actually served as a center of haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment), rabbinic scholarship and a vital and innovative Hasidic movement, and later produced countless Zionist and socialist leaders as well as a cadre of literary and academic stars including most prewar Polish-Jewish historians and, most famously, the noble prize laureate S.Y. Agnon. This course surveys the establishment, flourishing and destruction of this once vital community by examining its social, economic, political, religious and cultural history from the eighteenth century – the time of the province's creation – to the Holocaust and its aftermath. While we focus on Galicia, we will regularly place Galicia in its broader East European context, particularly in the final three lectures covering the period after the demise of Galicia as a legal province at the end of the First World War. -

Smith Perhaps THE greatest benefit of choosing as a young adult to become more traditional is that with some age and experience comes a more mature awareness of, and appreciation of, the power of choice. I was raised in a home profoundly committed to Jewish activism, Jewish communal service and the idea of tikkun olam — repairing the world. I sincerely felt overwhelming pride in my Judaism. The State of Israel was revered. Fighting injustice was a core value. Giving tzedakah (charity) and acting like a mensch were so much more important than getting top grades and being the big man on campus. Halacha, Jewish law, was deemed to be quite charming and certainly worthy of our respect, but otherwise antiquated and, therefore, not all that relevant. Children learn early on that choices matter. This usually starts with parents and siblings who encourage us when we’re being adorable and redirect us when we’re making bad, especially unsafe or dangerous choices.
