County Durham lies between the River Wear and the River Tees and is varied and beautiful. Our National Garden Scheme gardens are to be found in the city, high up in the dales, in the attractive villages of South Durham and outskirts of industrial Teesside. Something different every week. Choose your old favourites but also check out our wonderful new gardens. Country gardens include an exciting newly developed woodland and garden at The Stables, traditional village gardens at High Bank Farm and Homelands and a wildlife garden at East Middleton. Our town gardens can surprise you too. Oakdene tucked away in Darlington and the must-see quirky new Garden and Studio at 67 in St Helen Auckland. All our garden owners are looking forward to welcoming you. Northumberland is a county of ancient castles and wild coastline, of expansive views and big skies. This beautiful landscape with its picturesque valleys provides the backdrop for a delightful range of gardens. There’s a great variety of styles from the walled vegetable gardens and sumptuous borders of large country houses to exciting contemporary planting. A historic manor house has a Gertrude Jekyll connection whilst a newly made garden is experimental and sustainable and full of ideas for organic growing. Another unusual garden has been made on an exceptionally steep slope, showing that you can transform even the most difficult of sites. There are city gardens too: a tiny courtyard packed with colour or the landscaped garden rooms around a hospice. From a series of cottage plots in a fishing village to arboreta and dramatic water features, there is so much to inspire. NORTH EAST 5 Help open gardens for the future with a gift in your will A love of gardens is often inherited from our parents or grandparents. If you love gardens and garden visiting, you can help inspire that passion in future generations by leaving a gift in your will to the National Garden Scheme. There is a tennis court, indoor heated swimming pool, a large Victorian greenhouse, formal and walled gardens with ornamental ponds and adjoining grass paddocks, in all extending to around 11.46 acres. Low Walworth Hall is approached along a half mile driveway through farmland with a set of remote control wooden gates opening to provide access to the stunning grounds of the Hall, with a gravelled driveway sweeping to the front of the building. The gardens, until recently, have been open to the public. The old walled garden features high brick walls which support espalier fruit trees with carefully shaped lawns interspersed with rose beds and shrubs.
