You look at the meagre supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive? THIS IS THE LONG DARK. The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies — only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. WINTERMUTE. The episodic story-mode for The Long Dark, WINTERMUTE launches with two of the five episodes that form its Season One. In Episode One: “Do Not Go Gentle” , bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse. In Episode Two: “Luminance Fugue” , Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted? The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 15 hours of gameplay. Episodes Three to Five are included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free as they are released. Features performances by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (Episode Three), and the music of Cris Velasco. SURVIVAL MODE. Survival Mode is the free-form, non-narrative survival sandbox that has been honed over nearly three years on Early Access. Survival is your only goal, and death your only end. Make your own survival story with every game. Features the music of Sascha Dikiciyan. CHALLENGES. Several standalone Challenge Modes offer objective-based experiences designed to last 1-3 hours each, such as Whiteout — the race to gather enough supplies to prepare for a monster blizzard. Or Hunted, where you need to escape a murderous Bear. Complete them to unlock Feats that provide long-term gameplay benefits in Survival Mode. Five Challenges exist at launch, with more on the way in future updates. FUTURE UPDATES. In addition to releasing the remaining three episodes of WINTERMUTE, we intend to continue updating Survival Mode, as we have done with about 100 updates/hotfixes over the past three years of Early Access. Keep in mind that your purchase of The Long Dark entitles you to all five episodes of WINTERMUTE, as well as updates to Survival Mode along the way. ABOUT HINTERLAND. I gave it a few more tries with and without the table active I think it's related to rope mechanic itself, you can not be emcumbered while using those ropes and when I had the cheats active I had lots of weight on me without encumberabce. I managed to work around it though after having to delete a save I saved right before having to touch a rope, quitted the game, restarted, without the table active I dropped loads of stuff then used the rope, saved again and activated cheats again. edit: I tried the table again only with infinite carry weight and used a rope game didn't freak out so I don't know if it is caused by another cheat option, multiple options together or if it was related to my computer or something. edit 2: the infinite stamina is the culprit, with the other cheats using a rope don't cause any issues, if I have the infinite stamina active when I use a rope screen goes all white and doesn't recover. I can still hear the character move, can open the radial menu but can't see anything other than white. The Long Dark v1.16 Rugged Sentinel-RELOADED Free Download Full Version. One such subject is the translation of video game achievements, which currently remains completely unstudied. It is the purpose of this thesis to fix this research gap to the extent it is able. Because of the lack of research on the subject in Translation Studies, much of the background of this thesis comes from the domains of Video Game Studies and gamification research. While achievements are a particularly popular topic of research in gamification, translation has not been taken into account in any of that research. This thesis aims to examine features of achievement translation by comparing the source and target achievements of the games The Long Dark and Spyro the Dragon and classifying the translation strategies used in them.

American International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 3; June 2016 Game Worlds: A Howard Becker Influenced Institutional Theory of Games Theresa Devine New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Arizona State University P.O. Box 37100 M/C 2151 Phoenix, AZ 85069-7100, USA Abstract Usually the term "Gameworld" or "game world" refers to an in-game space of a digital game designed by developers and enjoyed by players. In this article, I am not using the term in that way. I am interested in situating the makers, supporters, and critics of the game world in relationship to one another, using the template set forth in Art Worlds written by Howard S. Becker in 1982. His institutional theory of art serves as an exemplar to comprehend the game world from a sociological viewpoint. Currently, no one has taken the time to sort out the sociological structure of the construction, delivery and reception of games. This article fills that gap. Keywords: Artworld, Gameworld, games as Art, Howard Becker, institutional theory, video games, game field analysis 1. Introduction Usually the term "Gameworld" or "game world" refers to an in-game space of a digital game designed by developers and enjoyed by players. A plethora of game studies articles uses this context. (e.g. Gazzard, 2011; Miller, 2008; Doh & Whang, 2014; Latorre, 2015; Grimshaw, et al., 2011; Cassar, 2013) As David Surman put it: "Gameworlds are the expression of a complex cultural and textual interaction, in which the foundational structures of the videogame solicit investment and belief from the player" (Surman, 2007, p.

The backer-developer connection: Exploring crowdfunding’s influence on video game production Anthony N. Smith University of Salford, UK Abstract As video game development studios increasingly turn to digital crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter for financing, this article explores the ways in which these processes shape production. It examines in particular the interactions that typically occur between studios and players as part of crowdfunded development, analysing the ways in which these activities inform aspects of video game design. By charting the implications of this burgeoning economic model, the article contributes to scholarship concerning video game production, and intervenes within more specific discussions concerning the role of the player within development. The article’s case study, which draws from evidence of production concerning multiple Kickstarter projects, is organised into two sections. The first ascertains the degrees to which Kickstarter users can influence the details of a proposed project during a crowdfunding campaign; the second looks at how developers involve crowdfunding communities within production once funding is secured.

  • Quality Control in Games Development
Quality Control in Games Development Marwa Syed 2019 Laurea Laurea University of Applied Sciences Importance of Quality Control in Games Development Marwa Syed Business Information Technology Bachelor’s Thesis May 2019 Laurea University of Applied Sciences Abstract Business Information Technology Degree Programme in Business Information Technology Bachelor’s Thesis Marwa Syed Development Year 2019 Pages 45 The purpose of this thesis was to provide more information regarding the role of quality con- trol in game development to game industry professionals, game development start-ups and potential employees of this field. There are several misconceptions about this profession and this thesis contains information regarding the impact quality control has in games develop- ment. The motivation to conduct this research and write this thesis comes from the author’s work experience in testing games in a game development studio. From personal experience, the author had some misconceptions about this profession as well, which were cleared when she began working as a tester. The information regarding quality control is sparse compared to other aspects of game development. This thesis was written using a qualitive research method where the sources were from data collection, online survey, printed and online literature. The results of this research outlined the different methods of testing processes the quality control department must undergo to produce a feasible outcome for a game. Quality control is one of the main aspects of game development, since this activity results in the discovery of bugs, establishing a defect database, and most importantly, the approval for a viable game to be published. Quality control does not cease when the game is released but continues postproduction as well.

Following Arsenault’s (2011) thesis which theorized genre as the “temporary crystallization of a common cultural consensus” (pp. 333– 334), it maps the shared horizon of expectations of the walking simulator. The first section presents an overview of genre theory in the field of game studies. The second part assembles a corpus of five iconic walking simulators based on a discourse analysis conducted in four gaming communities: scholars, journalists, designers, and Steam users. The third portion builds on this discourse analysis to conceptualize five clusters of “generic resources” (Gregersen, 2014) that synthesize the collective understanding of the walking simulator’s generic experiences, which are then analyzed in the final segment with reference to one exemplar game of the corpus. Each analysis introduces a specific “generic effect” (Arsenault, 2011)—peacefulness, secretiveness, fatalism, everydayness, and self- reflexive distanciation—that contributes to ongoing efforts to outline the experiences of this genre. The conclusion ends with a brief discussion about the importance of transgeneric studies. • Creation of a Virtual Reality Sickness Reduction Tool
Graeme Barclay VIRTUAL REALITY AND VIRTUAL REALITY SICKNESS Creation of a Virtual Reality Sickness Reduction Tool Bachelor’s thesis Degree programme in Game Design 2020 Author (authors) Degree Time Graeme Barclay Bachelor of Culture April 2020 and Arts Thesis title 87 pages Virtual Reality and Virtual Reality Sickness 6 pages of appendices Creation of a Virtual Reality Sickness Reduction Tool Commissioned by Self-commission Supervisor Marko Siitonen Abstract Virtual reality (VR) games are an increasingly popular entertainment media within the gaming industry. However, virtual reality is hindered by the effects of virtual reality sickness (similar to motion sickness). The objective of this thesis was to establish what aspects of virtual reality games cause VR sickness in order to create a design tool — the Virtual Reality Sickness Reduction Tool (VRSRT) — for virtual reality game developers to use, complete with practical solutions, that could limit the impact of VR sickness when developing virtual reality games. This new design tool was then validated through the creation of a virtual reality game product. This thesis studied existing virtual reality games via content analysis as well as examined the relevant literature surrounding the topics of virtual reality and VR sickness through a literature review. The research was to show the relationship between VR sickness and virtual reality and the impact it has on the virtual reality experience. Moreover, the research provided many practical solutions for VR sickness and the results contributed to the creation of the VRSRT. The product design result of this thesis was Homeward, a virtual reality experience game, designed and implemented with the VRSRT born from the research conducted.
