Real Aliens, Space Beings, and Creatures from Other Worlds Real Aliens 3/9/11 11:46 AM Page i A BOUT THE AUTHORS he author/co-author of 170 books, Brad TSteiger wrote the paperback bestseller Strangers from the Skies about UFOs. His edited work Project Bluebook was hailed by Omni maga- zine as one of the best UFO books of the centu- ry. Steiger was inducted into the Hypnosis Hall of Fame for his work with UFO contactees, abductees, and past life regression. In Minneapo- lis, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the National UFO and Unexplained Phenomena Conference. The author/co-author of 43 books, Brad’s wife, Sherry Steiger, an ordained minister with a special interest in UFOs in the Bible and world religions, began working closely in 1985 with Dr. J. Allen Hynek, official scientific advisor for the U.S. Air Force’s twen- ty-year study of UFOs. Sherry served as his publicist, and confidante at his nonprofit UFO research organization in Phoenix until his death in 1986. This position made her privy to unpublished research and more than 80,000 documented cases from 161 countries. For many decades, the Steigers have researched and investigated UFOs and their cultural impact throughout world history, and they have lectured and conducted semi- nars on the phenomenon throughout the United States and overseas. Sherry and Brad were featured in twenty-two episodes of the television series Could It Be a Miracle?. Together, their television appearances and specials include: The Joan Rivers Show, Enter- tainment Tonight, Inside Edition, Hard Copy, Hollywood Insider, and specials on HBO, USA Network, The Learning Channel, The History Channel, and Arts and Entertain- ment (A&E), among others. Today his phenomenal creative talents are witnessed by thou- sands upon thousands of locals and tourists who throng the streets of New Orleans each year to catch a glimpse of one of the oldest and most prestigious parades of the season, the Krewe of Mid-City. According to Ricardo, “The best is still to come!” Born in New Orleans, Ricardo is the third son of local golfing legend Eddie “Blackie” Pustanio, a well-known icon of the sport. When Ricardo was baptized, the famous “Diamond Jim” Moran was hailed as his godfather and all the major golfing pros who visited the elder Pustanio at his City Park Golf Course digs bounced little Ricardo on their knees at one time or another. Like nearly every child brought up in the city of New Orleans, Ricardo was taught by his parents to enjoy the pageantry and revelry of the great old-line Mardi Gras parades. These halcyon Mardi Gras days of his youth were Ricardo’s first taste of the passion that would become the artistic inspiration of his later career. During the 1960s Ricardo’s entries won first place awards and rode with the King of Mid-City three years in a row: a true precursor of things to come. The winner of many art competitions throughout his life, his earliest prize-win- ning work was created while Ricardo was still in Kindergarten. From an early age, Ricardo’s works were distinguished with prizes and praise. Many are now in private art collections in New Orleans and across the United States. Ricardo’s special style has been very visible in his work on numerous backdrops and displays for the 1984 New Orleans World’s Fair; several of his original pieces from that Fair have garnered high prices at auctions throughout the United States and Europe. Ricardo served Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carré as technical director for its 1992 to 1993 season, during which he contributed his considerable artistic talents to the creation of scenery and backdrops for the season’s major productions, including West Side Story and The Baby Dance, for which he created a giant sixty-foot by thirty-foot pâpier-maché pyramid, one of the highlights of the season. Ricardo’s set designs for the REAL ALIENS, SPACE BEINGS, AND CREATURES FROM OTHER WORLDS [vii] Real Aliens 3/9/11 11:46 AM Page viii Contributors productions of King Midas and the Golden Touch and The Snow Queen won him numerous awards. In 1992 Ricardo began his long association with William Crumb and the Children’s Educational Theatre. His work on scenery and backdrops has toured with the company in thirteen major productions across the United States, and he continues to contribute his talents to the organization to this day.

I The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Lost Races and Racism in American Popular Culture James R. Nesteby Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Doctor of Philosophy August 1978 Approved: © 1978 JAMES RONALD NESTEBY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ¡ ¡ in Abstract The Tarzan series of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), beginning with the All-Story serialization in 1912 of Tarzan of the Apes (1914 book), reveals deepseated racism in the popular imagination of early twentieth-century American culture. The fictional fantasies of lost races like that ruled by La of Opar (or Atlantis) are interwoven with the realities of racism, particularly toward Afro-Americans and black Africans. In analyzing popular culture, Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (1932) and John G. Cawelti's Adventure, Mystery, and Romance (1976) are utilized for their indexing and formula concepts. The groundwork for examining explanations of American culture which occur in Burroughs' science fantasies about Tarzan is provided by Ray R. Browne, publisher of The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture, and by Gene Wise, author of American Historical Explanations (1973). The lost race tradition and its relationship to racism in American popular fiction is explored through the inner earth motif popularized by John Cleves Symmes' Symzonla: A Voyage of Discovery (1820) and Edgar Allan Poe's The narrative of A. Gordon Pym (1838); Burroughs frequently uses the motif in his perennially popular romances of adventure which have made Tarzan of the Apes (Lord Greystoke) an ubiquitous feature of American culture.

Is there a single intelligent force behind all religious, occult, and UFO phenomena? Strange manifestations have haunted humans since prehistoric times. Beams of light, voices from the heavens, the "little people," gods and devils, ghosts and monsters, and UFOs, have all had a prominent place in our history and legends. In this dark work, John Keel explores these phenomena, and in doing so reveals the shocking truth about our present position and future destiny in the cosmic scheme of things. Are we pawns in a celestial game? In the Orient, there is a story told of the seven towers. These citadels, well hidden from mankind, are occupied by groups of Satanists who are chanting the world to ruin. Perhaps this is just a story; perhaps there is some truth behind it. But what if there is yet another tower, a tower not of good or evil but of infinite power? What if all our destinies are controlled by this cosmic force for its own mysterious purposes? And what if UFOs and other paranormal manifestations are The Eighth Tower: On Ultraterrestrials and the Superspectrum tools being used to manipulate us and guide us toward the The Eighth Tower: On Ultraterrestrials and the Superspectrum role we are fated to play? Perhaps, after all, we are not independent beings but are instead the creations and slaves of the eighth tower.

How these myths are perpetuated is of particular interest when discussing the West because, as I will discuss at length, it is the means by which the myth is trafficked that has become the sign of the thing itself. The West therefore has become a mirror of its motivations — the shape shifting Terminator capable of adopting any form. What Debord called our society of spectacle has eclipsed the earlier orientation of a Christian heaven and redirected our focus away from the soul to the material pursuit and the game of identity makeover.
