Canadian Beatles Albums Identification Guide Updated: 22 De 16 Type 1 Rainbow Label Capitol Capitol Records of Canada contracted Beatlemania long before their larger and better-known counterpart to the south. Canadian Capitol's superior decision-making brought Beatles records to Canada in early 1963. After experimenting with the release of a few singles, Capitol was eager to release the Beatles' second British album in Canada. Sources differ as to the release date of the LP, but surely by December 2, 1963, Canada's version of With the Beatles became the first North American Beatles album. Capitol-USA and Capitol-Canada were negotiating the consolidation of their releases, but the US release of The Beatles' Second Album had a title and contained songs that were inappropriate for Canadian release. After a third unique Canadian album, album and single releases were unified. From Something New on, releases in the two countries were nearly identical, although Capitol-Canada continued to issue albums in mono only. At the time when Beatlemania With the Beatles came out, most Canadian pop albums were released in the "6000 Series." The label style in 1963 was a rainbow label, similar to the label used in the United States but with print around the rim of the label that read, "Mfd. in Canada by Capitol Records of Canada, Ltd. Registered User. Copyrighted." Henke was there when U2 was setting out for America for the rst time. He wrote the rst prole of the band to appear in a major U.S. magazine and put these 50 states on notice with his Feb. 19, 1981, article "U2: Here Comes the 'Next Big Thing.'" Two years later, even though U2 had war on the brain, Henke's June 9, 1983, prole made the point that "Blessed Are the Peacemakers." Henke would eventually write several stories about U2 for Rolling Stone while on staff from 1977 to 1992, including proles, reviews and the Rolling Stone interview with The Edge in 1988. There was a time when "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" were new releases, not the stadium-pounding anthems concert crowds expect to hear today. -

Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

BATES BELK BIOGRAPHY Bates Belk is a global recording artist and music producer whose high energy, boundary-pushing songs and remixes have moved international audiences on dance floors in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and USA audiences in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Miami. In 2015, after 20 years of solely being based in New York City, Bates relocated to Berlin, Germany, where he continues to operate BB3 Dynamics Records LLC (www.BB3Dynamics.com) with offices in both Berlin and New York City. Bates globally released two Techno EPs in late 2015. The first Techno EP was released on 9 October, 2015 entitled Life Trichotomy containing a selection of philosophically-based theatrical Techno compositions written in Berlin, New York and London. The second Techno EP was released on 13 November, 2015 entitled Life Trichotomy Reincarnated – The Remixes containing songs remixed by other artists from the Life Trichotomy EP. In 2014 and 2015, Bates globally released a series of 6 electronic dance songs with the first song released in 2014 entitled OUTTASIGHT, followed by 2015 releases of the songs It’s in the Mind, Bionic Power (Pushing Harder, Jumping Higher), Danger with a Stranger and Get Me to the Disco. Bates is currently producing his début album in Berlin, which contains collaborations with over 40 Berlin-based artists. Bates was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, USA. Art to Commerce: The Trajectory of Popular Music Criticism Thomas Conner and Steve Jones University of Illinois at Chicago [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract This article reports the results of a content and textual analysis of popular music criticism from the 1960s to the 2000s to discern the extent to which criticism has shifted focus from matters of music to matters of business. In part, we believe such a shift to be due likely to increased awareness among journalists and fans of the industrial nature of popular music production, distribution and consumption, and to the disruption of the music industry that began in the late 1990s with the widespread use of the Internet for file sharing. Searching and sorting the Rock’s Backpages database of over 22,000 pieces of music journalism for keywords associated with the business, economics and commercial aspects of popular music, we found several periods during which popular music criticism’s focus on business-related concerns seemed to have increased. The article discusses possible reasons for the increases as well as methods for analyzing a large corpus of popular music criticism texts. Keywords: music journalism, popular music criticism, rock criticism, Rock’s Backpages Though scant scholarship directly addresses this subject, music journalists and bloggers have identified a trend in recent years toward commerce-specific framing when writing about artists, recording and performance. Most music journalists, according to Willoughby (2011), “are writing quasi shareholder reports that chart the movements of artists’ commercial careers” instead of artistic criticism. While there may be many reasons for such a trend, such as the Internet’s rise to prominence not only as a medium for distribution of music but also as a medium for distribution of information about music, might it be possible to discern such a trend? Our goal with the research reported here was an attempt to empirically determine whether such a trend exists and, if so, the extent to which it does. -
