Shockey Family Newsletter Shockey Family Newsletter April 2016 - Volume 42 Editors: Marie F Shockey – Allegro - 108 Diecks Drive, Apt 224 - Elizabethtown, KY 42701 Lesley L Shockey - 516 Independence Road - Sandyville, WV 25275 Some of those who attended the 2015 Shockey Family Reunion at Shockeysville Church Dear Friends and Shockey Cousins By: Lesley Shockey Another year has come and gone and there has been so many changes that I am not sure where to start. The major change in my life has been the death of Naomi which many of you already know about. She waged a major battle with her lung cancer for 37 months but the end seemed to have come to suddenly for me. Later in this newsletter I will include the letter that I wrote that was read at her funeral. David F. Shockey, who served as the second President of the Shockey Family Fellowship Inc. following the term of John C. Shockey, made the decision to step down from the office in 2014. I was elected as President to replace him. Donna K. Shockey also made the decision to step down as Secretary after during a great job for so many years. Donna J. Porter also made the decision to step down as Treasurer after so many years of keeping the books in order. The decision to combine the two jobs was made and Edward Paul Browne II was selected to fill the dual positions. Marie, who has written at least the opening pages for the Newsletter for the past 41 years, is not able to contribute her usual articles this year. One of the two major problems is that here computer is down and she cannot send or receive email. Second she has lost the use of her right hand since her medical problems this past December. Last year’s Newsletter announced that the next two reunions would be held in Shockeysville or Winchester. The decision was made at the 2015 reunion to move the 2016 reunion to Arkansas with John L. Shockey and David L. Shockey co-hosting the reunion. The 2016 Shockey Family Reunion will be held at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Benton, Arkansas June 30th through July 4th. Our group rate is $91.00 plus tax. Amenities include free high speed Internet, free hot breakfast, fitness center and pool. To make your reservations call 1-501-722-6330 and be sure to mention the Shockey family reunion to receive the discount rate. Fairfield Inn & Suites in Benton is along I-30 Frontage Road near Exit 118. Plans include visits to several cemeteries in which Shockey relatives are buried, a trip to Garvan Gardens and Crater of Diamonds State Park, possibly a tour of Hot Springs and Lake Hamilton on a Duck and also a tour of the President Clinton Library if there is enough interest. If you prefer flying, the nearest airport is Little Rock Airport. Hope to see you at the Shockey reunion. Last year we had 41 guests that registered. Ten states were represented. Those from West Virginia were: Les and Naomi Shockey of Sandyville, WV, David Shockey of Fayetteville, WV, Neal and Edna Shockey and Debbie Riggleman of Mabie, WV. The ones from Kentucky were: Marie Shockey of Elizabethtown, KY, David Shockey of Rineyville, KY. The ones from Maryland include: Paul Browne, Eric Shockey, William, Vanesa, Mickela and Annabelle Shockey of Mt. Airy, MD, Mary Shockey, Ralph Shockey and Brian Shockey of Frederick,. Those from Virginia were: Sharon Wetzel of Ferrum, VA, Mauri and Heather Shockey of Henrico, VA, Scott Luttrell of Stephenson, VA, Rev. Isaac Luttrell of Gore, VA. The ones from Georgia were: Charlotte Shockey and Carol Shockey of Harlem, GA, Bonnie Tennant, Grovetown, GA. The ones from Pennsylvania were: Glen and Virginia Shockey of Greencastle, PA. The ones from Ohio were: Dennis and Janel Teegardin of Brunswick, OH and Morgan Stein of Hilliard, OH. The one from Delaware was: Denise Jackson of Lewes, DE. Those from Arkansas were: John and Betty Shockey of Lonsdale, AR, Justin, Jace and Jaxon Shockey of Benton, AR, David and Toni Shockey of Hot Springs, AR. The one from Nebraska was Kaylene Silvester of Champion, NE. The ones travelling the furthest were: Stephen and Nancy Shockey of Glendale, AZ. Les reported that the Newsletter was posted on-line. He reported, however, that there had been fewer than 200 visitors to the download site. David F Shockey stated that many people do not use the Internet and that he knew of many that had been users that were moving away from Internet use. He stated that the lack of knowledge on computer use; difficulty using software; and difficulty navigating web site were often reasons. He opinionated that it is likely we will se a decrease in use (at least amongst older members) and that the board should consider revisiting the possibility of mailing copies. Les mentioned that he had only one phone request for a printed copy and that the URL and E-Mail address for web use was on his new business card. Sharon Wetzel-Shockey opinionated that the use of on-line and social media was a good thing and would be good for expanding membership. David H Shockey recommended that there be two portions of the newsletter: The small section and the larger Obituaries section, that way members could download or we could print and mail the smaller part more cheaply for those that don’t want the obituaries. GENEOLOGY REPORT: Les Shockey gave the geology report - there are currently 7721 families; 28,333 events; 21,454 citations; and 843 photos in the system today. Les also discussed the DNA program and also solicited for members to add the Family Finder DNA test. In addition, he solicited for male decedents. CHURCH REPORT: Scott Luttrell gave the church report. OLD BUSINESS: Resigning Members: David F Shockey reported that Donna Porter was resigning. Les moved to accept. He mentioned that the Secretary and Treasurer positioned were voted to be merged and that Paul Browne was nominated. David also mentioned that he had resigned and that Les had been nominated as President. Both were presented to the membership for approval. Bathroom Issue: The bathroom issue as raised. Scott presented the cost of $30-60K. There is not enough room for a drain field. Investigate the possibility of getting a Port-a-Potty for free as a temporary measure. The minister brought up the possibility of having two tanks. The “solid” tank would have to be emptied. The “liquid” could be taken for sterilization and use. Property: Property discussion about lots. Scott mentioned that the sold property had not been developed and believed that the lots were to be used as hunting lodges or “city get aways” but not residences. NEW BUSINESS: Next Years’ Reunion: David F Shockey reported that the board was recommending that next years’ reunion be held in Hot Springs Arkansas. It was Recommended for approval by Ralph and seconded by David and approved. Assistance With Tours: David F announced that Paul was to assist on tours in addition to Les. Les’ Card: Les asked that everyone feel free to pass around Les’ card. Books on DVDs and Web Assistance: Charlotte brought up a suggestion that the books be burnt on DVDs for sale. Marie said that she wanted to ensure that it was managed to be a “not for profit” endeavor if approved. Discussion ensued about costs. It was recommended that they be handled like T-Shirts and hats. It was tabled for the next board meeting if not a special meeting. Les mentioned that Charlotte had asked if assistance was wanted for web site. CLOSING OF MEETING: David L Shockey moved for adjournment and Les Shockey seconded. Meeting adjourned at 13:42 OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS OF THE SHOCKEY FAMILY MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP, INC. Lesley L. • June 13, 2016 Muhammad Ali Expansion Act Long Overdue
June 13, 2016 Muhammad Ali Expansion Act Long Overdue Together, we are writing to express our unwavering support for passage of the Muhammad Ali Expansion Act, the proposed amendment to the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act (Ali Act) to all combat sports including mixed martial arts (MMA). This amendment is desperately needed by combat sports athletes and to enable these sports to prosper and thrive. The lack of financial disclosures and coercive contractual practices that plagues MMA not only deprives each athlete of rights already offered to boxers, but also prevents investment in the sport and, as a result, stunts the sport’s natural growth. Fighters are hamstrung in their ability to negotiate fight purses as promotions, unlike in boxing, are not required to disclose to fighters the revenues earned from such bouts. Just recently boxer Chris Algieri invoked the Ali Act to obtain financial disclosures from his promoter to assist him in negotiating his purse. For no seemingly logical reason or good reason, fighters in other combat sports are not provided the same disclosures. Coercive contractual practices crippling the natural growth of MMA include, but are not limited to: (i) the use of exclusive and non-public contracts; (ii) the assignment of ancillary rights from the athlete to the promoter far beyond the term of the promotional agreement; (iii) champions clauses that prevent champions from ever becoming freely marketable; and (iv) secret discretionary payments that are utilized to keep the athletes subservient and silent. Athletes in MMA and other combat sports compete without benefit of independent, objective rankings criteria.
