CENSUS 1971 SERIES 2 ANDHRA PRADESH DISTRICT CENSUS HANDBOOK MEDAK PART X-A VILLAGE & TOWN DIRECTORY PART X-B VILLAGE & TOWN PRIMARY CENSUS ABSTRACT T. VEDANTAM OF THE INDIAN ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE DIRECTOR Of CENSUS OPERATIONS ANDHRA PRADESH PUBLISHED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF ANDHRA PRADESH U73 The Deoni Breed (Narayankhed Bull) In an agricurtural country likll India, livestock has an impor tant role in the country. India has a very large number of cattle in the world viz. 1,730 lakhs out of 9,923 lakhs in the world or a little over one sixth of the world's cattle population. Andhra Pradesh State ranks sixth in India with 123 lakhs of catt Ie or 7.13% of the cattle population of the country. There are 91 cattle for every 100 hectares of cultivated area in the State compared to Jl8 for all India. Andhra Pradesh State is also noted for the famous breeds of cattle like the Ongole Bulls, Punganur, Ha llika I G, Malvi, Deoni, etc. The motif on the cover page represents the Narayankhed Bull, one of the popular cattle breeds in Andhra Pradesh Statl!. The hreed is known as Deoni or Dongarpatti. It is confined to the Marathwada Districts and Bidar District of former Hyderabad State. In Andhra Pradesh these cattle are found mostly in Narayankhed and Zahirabad Taluks of Medak District which formed part of Bidar District prior to the formation of Andhra Pradesh ill 1956. They appear to be allied to the Dangi cattle found in Maharashtra. In general, the Deoni breed resembles the Gil' breed found in Kathiawar to a large extent but it is constituted with some other blood and reared under different conditions and has some special features. These cattle are of medium size. The forehead is most prominent with the horns, in some typical cows ..having a characteristic outward and backward curves similar to those seen in Gir breed. The face is lean but not so clean cut as in the Gir breed. The ears are generally black in colour. moderately long, hang almost perpendicularly with the inner surface visible from the front and usually lack the notch near the tip, a typical featllre of the pure bred Gi,' cattle. The udder is of fair size and is 'lsually compact with well placet! teats of moderate size. The special features of the breed are t.1ze deep chest, weI! arched ribs. straight back and powerful quarters, the cfean limbs and good feet, moderately developed hump placed ill front of the withers. the long whip like tail almost reaching the grolllld. the fine ,kin alld the heavy dewlap and sheath which is pendlilolls, but nat excessively developed. The bull.cks of this breed are good working animals and usefUl for heavy cultivation. The cows are the'best milkers in the State, particularly, in the Telangalla Ref!ioll. It is esti mated that each milch cow gires 3,000 Ibs. of milk per lactatjOlT, on an average. These cattle are assem~led for sale in the weekly markets, jatras and fairs held ill Medak, Bidar alld other adjoin ing districts. The best market is Deoni in Vdgir Taluk in Bidar District (Mysore State) which is al a distance of abollt 100 Kms. -courtesy:" Director of Animal Husbandry, Government of from NaraYatlkhed. PREFACE The District Census Handbooks which were first published at the 1951 Census proved to be very useful to the State and Central Government Departments, private agencies and academic bodies like Universities and Research Institutions. The scope of these Handbooks was enlarged to make them more useful during the 1961 Census. Considering the delay in the pUblication of these Handbooks due to difficulties in finding suitable presses which could undertake huge printing work of this kind, it was considered desirable to split up the 1~71 Census Handbooks into three parts viz., Part A- Village and Town Directory, Part B-Village and Town Primary Census Abstract and Part C-Analytical Report, Departmental Statistics and District Census Tables. This was done mainly with a view to pUblishing Parts A and B which contain not only the population data upto the village and town level but also the particulars about the basic amenities etc .• available in the towns and villages, as early as possible for public use. The scope and contents of these three parts are elaborated in the introduction of this volume. I am glad to record here that Parts A and B of the 1971 Census Handbooks of all the 2l districts in the State have been finalised already and I expect that before the end of 1973 Parts A and B for all the 21 districts would have been published. The compiiation of the,e HandbJoks is being dJn! frJm the 1951 C ~nsus in the 03i;e of the Director of Census ,Operations while the cost of paper, printing, etc., required for these volumes is being borne by the State Government. The Andhra Pradesh State Government have readily agreed to bear the cost of printing and paper for the 1971 Census Handbooks. I am grateful to the Andhra Pradesh State Government and in particular to the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Shri S. A. Quader, lAS., for their co-operation and encouragement. I am thankful to the Director of Printing, Government of Andhra Pradesh for assisting me by selecting suitable presses for undertaking the printing of the Handbooks. The data presented in the Village and Town Directories are obtained from different State Government and Central Government Departments but for whose co-operation Part-A of the Handbooks could not have been compiled. I am thankful to all of them for furnishing me the required data. I am extremely grateful to Shri A. Chandra S;!khar, lAS., Registrar General, India and Dr. Roy Burman, Deputy Registrar General, India who formulated the contents of these Handbooks in detail and rendered spontaneous help and encouragement to me at all stages.
