O. Murdock, of Washington, DC, from her ancestor, John M. Lea, a son-in-law of John Overton and were donated by her to the Tennessee Historical Society. The 1982 addition to the collection was given by Overton L. Murdock, of Bethesda, Maryland. The collection consists of 2.52 linear feet of shelf space and numbers approximately 1,025 items and three volumes. These papers are the property of the Tennessee Historical Society and are available on microfilm at the Joint Universities Library and the Manuscript Division of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Single photocopies of documents may be made for individual or scholarly purposes. However, for commercial use, or use that may constitute a copy right infringement, the user should obtain permission from the historical society. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection of papers of John Overton, numbering approximately 900 items, are composed of correspondence, two promissory notes, a Masonic document and a small diary of Nashville events listed yearly beginning in 1780, ending in 1851. The correspondence deals primarily with land cases of John Overton as lawyer and judge with some Tennessee politics intermingled. -

Ladies who became FIRST Rachel Donelson – the Fourth in a Series by Randall Priest Rachel Donelson Robards Jackson [Figure 1] was born in June, 1767, to Colonel John Donelson and Rachel Stockley Donelson at their home about ten miles from Chatham, Virginia in Pittsylvania County, near the Banister River. She was the 11th of 12 children. When Rachel was 12 years old her family moved to Tennessee where Colonel Donelson co-founded what was to become the city of Nashville. When Rachel was about 19 years old she was attracting much attention from suitors. She was described as having “lustrous black eyes, dark glossy hair, full red lips, brunette complexion, though of brilliant coloring, and a sweet oval face rippling with smiles and dimples.” Her first marriage, at age 20, was to Captain Lewis Robards of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, a landowner and speculator. The marriage was not a happy affair, and after 3 years, in 1790, the two separated. Figure 1 When Andrew Jackson [Figure 2 & 6] migrated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1788, he boarded with Rachel Stockley Donelson, the mother of Rachel Robards. Rachel and Andrew began seeing each other, and in 1791, they went to Natchez, Mississippi, and were married. This was after they saw a notice in the paper that said that Lewis Robards had obtained a divorce from Rachel. Soon it was learned that the notice was fake. Robards filed for divorce in 1794 using adultery as the reason. Rachel and Andrew ‘remarried’ in December of that year. As is the ‘normal’ way presidential election campaigns are run, the Figure 3 other side is always looking for some ‘dirt.’ During the campaign of 1828 supporters of John Quincy Adams [Figure 3], Jackson’s opponent accused Jackson’s wife of being a bigamist, among other things. -

1. Blount Mansion War of 1812 in Tennessee: 200 W. Hill Avenue, Knoxville A Driving Tour Governor Willie Blount, who served from 1809 to 1815, led Tennessee during the War of 1812. He lived in this sponsored and developed by the Center for Historic historic structure, originally the home of U.S. territorial Preservation, Middle Tennessee State University, Mur- freesboro Two hundred years ago, an international war raged across the United States of America. Thousands of American soldiers died in the conflict; the nation’s capital city was invaded, leaving both the White House and the U.S. Capitol in near ruins. An American invasion of Canada ended in failure. Defeat appeared to be certain—leaving the nation’s future in doubt—but down on the southern frontier Tennesseans fought and won major battles that turned the tide and made the reputation of a future U.S. president, Andrew Jackson. This conflict between the United States, Great Britain, governor William Blount (Willie’s older half-brother), Canada, and a score of sovereign Indian nations was called throughout the war. In 1813, Governor Blount raised the War of 1812 because the United States declared war over $37,000 and 2,000 volunteer soldiers to fight the on England in June of that year. LAND SURVEYING IN ALABAMA J. M. FAIRCLOTH PREFACE There are numerous treatises on land surveying available to the engineer or surveyor today. The legal, theoretical, and practical aspects of general land surveying are all easily available in great detail.* However, there is no writing known to the author which deals specifically with surveying in Alabama or which touches in any appreciable degree upon the problems encountered in Alabama. This manual is not intended to cover the general type of material easily available in the usual surveying text, the manual of the U.S. Land Office or the many other references on surveying; but rather is intended to supplement these writings with information specific to Alabama. The author recognizes a growing need in Alabama for some source of information for the young land surveyor. Few colleges continue to include courses in land surveying in their required curricula, and few references are made to land surveying in the engineering courses on surveying. The increasing values of real property creates a growing public demand for competent land surveyors. The engineering graduate has little training or background for land surveying and has no avenue available for obtaining this information other than through practical experience. One of the purposes of this manual is to provide some of this information and to present some of the problems to be encountered in Alabama. The Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in Alabama is faced with the problem of a large public demand for land surveyors that cannot be filled on the one hand, and the maintenance of high professional standards with adequate means for training land surveyors on the other. -
The Cumberland Settlement
The Cumberland Settlement Essential Question: Why was the Cumberland Settlement created and what problems did the early settlers encounter? In 1775, Richard Henderson purchased 20 million acres of land from the Cherokee in a land deal known as the Transylvania Purchase. The lands lay in what is now middle Tennessee and Kentucky. While Henderson was not able to convince Virginia and North Carolina to recognize his entire claim, he was able to claim the region near the Cumberland River in Middle Tennessee. In 1779, Henderson planned a settlement in order to take advantage of the region’s rich natural resources including fertile soil and abundant animal life. Henderson’s settlement was named the Cumberland Settlement for the Cumberland River which served as main transportation route in the region. Henderson gave the difficult task of establishing the settlement to James Robertson and John Donelson. Donelson was an experienced land surveyor and veteran of the Cherokee War. James Robertson was one of first Watauga settlers and had served as one of the five magistrates established under the Watauga Compact. Robertson had also served as commander of Watuaga Fort during the Cherokee War. Henderson had a two part plan for settling the Cumberland region. First, Robertson and a small group of Wataugans traveled overland in the spring of 1779 to select a site for the settlement near French Lick. French Lick was a natural salt lick along the Cumberland River that had been the location of a French trading post. In December of 1779, Robertson and the men returned and built cabins and Fort Nashborough in preparation for the arrival of Donelson’s party in the spring of 1780. -

CHAIRMEN OF SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES [Table 5-3] 1789–present INTRODUCTION The following is a list of chairmen of all standing Senate committees, as well as the chairmen of select and joint committees that were precursors to Senate committees. (Other special and select committees of the twentieth century appear in Table 5-4.) Current standing committees are highlighted in yellow. The names of chairmen were taken from the Congressional Directory from 1816–1991. Four standing committees were founded before 1816. They were the Joint Committee on ENROLLED BILLS (established 1789), the joint Committee on the LIBRARY (established 1806), the Committee to AUDIT AND CONTROL THE CONTINGENT EXPENSES OF THE SENATE (established 1807), and the Committee on ENGROSSED BILLS (established 1810). The names of the chairmen of these committees for the years before 1816 were taken from the Annals of Congress. This list also enumerates the dates of establishment and termination of each committee. These dates were taken from Walter Stubbs, Congressional Committees, 1789–1982: A Checklist (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1985). There were eleven committees for which the dates of existence listed in Congressional Committees, 1789–1982 did not match the dates the committees were listed in the Congressional Directory. The committees are: ENGROSSED BILLS, ENROLLED BILLS, EXAMINE THE SEVERAL BRANCHES OF THE CIVIL SERVICE, Joint Committee on the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, LIBRARY, PENSIONS, PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, RETRENCHMENT, REVOLUTIONARY CLAIMS, ROADS AND CANALS, and the Select Committee to Revise the RULES of the Senate. For these committees, the dates are listed according to Congressional Committees, 1789– 1982, with a note next to the dates detailing the discrepancy.
