The 2016 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize Winners Announced THE 2016 SLAIGHT FAMILY POLARIS HERITAGE PRIZE WINNERS ANNOUNCED. TORONTO, ON – Monday, October 24, 2016. The Polaris Music Prize, produced by Blue Ant Media, announced the winning albums for the 2016 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize today. The winners were chosen from four short lists, each representing a different musical era, and were curated by juries of music historians and music media. Two winners for each era were chosen – one by public vote and one by the juries. Voting opened at the Polaris Music Prize Gala on September 19, 2016 and ended on October 17. The winners of the 2016 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize are: 1960-1975 Public: Neil Young - After The Gold Rush Jury: Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Leonard Cohen 1976 - 1985 Public: Rush - Moving Pictures Jury: Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Kate & Anna McGarrigle 1986-1995 Public: Blue Rodeo - Five Days In July Jury: Mary Margaret O’Hara - Miss America 1996-2005 Public: Arcade Fire - Funeral Jury: Lhasa - La Llorona Gary Slaight, President and CEO of Slaight Communications, commended the winners, saying,“Congratulations to all the winning artists. I appreciate all the hard work and dedication that goes into creating these memorable recordings and am pleased to celebrate your achievement in receiving this recognition.” Gilbert Li, who curated the 2016 Polaris Music Prize posters and the posters for the 2015 Heritage Prize, will return to select eight new artists to pay tribute to the winning records. The eight records that did not get selected as winners will remain on the short lists for the 2017 Heritage Prize. Two more records from the period, selected by the jury, will then be added. Where the jury and public picks for the winning record are the same, the next choice on the jury’s list is selected. This did not happen for the 2016 edition. This jury selected records for the Heritage Prize in accordance with existing Polaris criteria; to honour and reward artists who produce Canadian music albums of distinction without regard to musical genre or commercial popularity. We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada Music Fund) and of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters. We acknowledge the OMDC for their continued support of the Polaris Music Prize. • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Daniel Romano Returns with Modern Pressure
DANIEL ROMANO RETURNS WITH MODERN PRESSURE MAY 19 VIA NEW WEST RECORDS NOISEY PREMIERES “ROYA” MUSIC VIDEO “A freewheelin’, beatnik persona, part Serge Gainsbourg romantic, part ringmaster, Rolling Thunder Revue-era Dylan, part Jack White-style re-worker of dusty antiques.” THE LINE OF BEST FIT Prolific Canadian singer/songwriter Daniel Romano will release his seventh solo album Modern Pressure on May 19, 2017 via New West Records. Following his ambitious and genre-spanning full-length Mosey from last year, Modern Pressure was written in observational scrutiny beneath the overcast atmosphere of 2016 and vigorously tackles the present-day heaviness we contain in the jotting bones of our guilty expressions. Vice’s music site Noisey premiered the third track from the album yesterday calling it “a dreamy, laid back head-nodder featuring shuffling shakers, jangly tambourine, and ever-present, slinking guitar lines.” Read the piece HERE and view/share the video HERE. "’Roya’ is a celebration of women," Romano says of the song. "’Roya’ is to represent the femininity in nature and the universal She. This is a devotional memoir pertaining to the strength, endurance, spirit, and godlike gravity of our mothers, sisters, lovers, and friends." Of the album, Noisey praises, “It's sonically spiritual to 2016's Mosey, and shows Romano continuing to sharpen his signature sound, combining elements of retro-tinged rock 'n' roll, country, and psychedelia to create a vibrant tapestry of tunes that feel just as at home in 2017 as they might in 1965.” Modern Pressure will be available at all streaming services and for purchase on vinyl, CD, and digital download upon release.
