1 Introduction

1.1 This Document covers the following villages in the south of the District:

Capel-le-Ferne;

Shepherdswell;

Alkham;

East Langdon;

East Studdal;

Eythorne and Elvington;

Lydden;

Ringwould and Kingsdown;

Ripple;

St.Margaret's-at-Cliffe; and

West Hougham.

1.2 For completeness, sites that have been put forward in Hamlets in the south of the District have been included at the end of this Document.

2 Local Centres

2.1 The Settlement Hierarchy Policy, CP1, in the Core Strategy sets out the function and the scale of development of each of the six identified settlement categories. The Policy indicates that the fourth category, 'Local Centres' is:

'Secondary focus for development in the rural area; suitable for a scale of development that would reinforce its role as a provided of services to its home and adjacent communities. It should provide primary health and social care, education facilities, outdoor sports facilities, retail facilities including a Post Office and be accessible by a bus or train service'

2.2 There are two Local Centres in the southern part of the District:

Capel-le-Ferne Type Description

2.3 This section sets out statistics about the Parish followed by a map of the settlement. The Primary School Capel-le-ferne Primary School map shows services and facilities in a settlement and sites: Church/Chapel Baptist Church, St. Radigunds Church Considered but not included in the Site Allocations Preferred Options Document - coloured grey; Village Hall Included in the Site Allocations Preferred Options Document - coloured purple. 3 Villages

3.1 'Villages' are defined in the The Settlement Hierarchy in the adopted Core Strategy as:

'Tertiary focus for development in the rural area; suitable for a scale of development that would reinforce its role as a provider of services to essentially its home community. It should provide primary education facilities, community recreation area, at least one shop and be accessible by a bus or train service'.

3.2 There are nine settlements identified as 'villages' in the southern part of the District:
