VOLUME 9, NUMBER 24, DECEMBER 15th, 2001 Schools Compete in Science Fair Students Study the Ocean Around Us for Their Projects By Alice Bain The second annual all Abaco science fair was held at Central Abaco Primary School Santa Visits Toys for Tots Drive on November 28. This year’s theme was The Ocean Around Us and students from many schools on Abaco created exhibits to be shown at the fair organized by Ms. Beatrice Moxey, Vice-Principal of Central Abaco Primary. Sir Nicholas Nuttall of Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) attended the opening ceremonies and was the key note speaker. “A science fair’s a wonderful teaching tool,” stated Sir Nicholas, citing the value of the scientific method and its value to students as an illus- tration of cause and effect. “The farther you go into scientific investigation, the more in- teresting things you find.” Sir Nicholas also gave a summary of BREEF’s goal which is to preserve reef ecosystems in the Bahamas through education of students and the pub- lic. “There is a very simple lesson to learn about any fish,” said Sir Nicholas, “and that is, if you go after it while it is breeding, you will lose your stocks of the fish. If you pro- tect a fish adequately during its breeding season, the fish will flourish and you will have a sustainable fishery. A case in point is the state of Maine in Santa made his appearance at the party held by the Scurvy Few Motorcycle Club on December 9. The party was the climax in their the United States. They protected their lob- drive to collect new toys to be distributed to needy children throughout Abaco. This annual event is well supported by the residents sters some years back and now they have of central Abaco. Motorcyclists came from as far away as Florida to participate. There were games, rides, food and drink as well as a parade through Central Abaco. Please see Science Fair Page 22

The Central Abaco area has been pre- paring for Christmas recently. Open houses, wine tastings, parties and decorating is un- der full swing. Bella’s had an open house with a bank representative to help with fi- nancing of new furniture. The Lazy Parrot Restaurant just north of Murphy Town had Sweet Emily (shown at left) for a night of Kaioke. More than 300 people responded to her appealing voice. The shops of Royal Harbour Village in Marsh Harbour together held an open house to allow shoppers to browse and choose gifts for the holidays. Many homes are decorated with hundreds of lights and even animated displays. Visitors are returning to Abaco and it looks like the holiday season will be a good one after all.

Bristol Cellars and Price Right sponsored a wine and cheese tasting at Sapodilly’s Restau- rant on December 6. It proved to be a very popular party. Shown above are, left to right, Mr. Jim Cates, Mr. George Kelly with Bristol Cellars from Nassau and Mr. Art Sands. Mr. Cates and Mr. Sands manage the Bristol Cellars business on Abaco. They expect to open their new store across from the burned out Golden Harvest before Christmas.

FNM Raffle Awards a Car Dance Troupe Performs in Green Turtle Cay The Abaco Cultural Society pre- sented the Momentum Dance Company of Miami, Florida, in two performances on December 8. They took place at the Garden Theatre at the home of renown artist Alton Lowe. The matinee perfor- mance for young people portrayed the history of civilization from cave man days through the technology era. The one hour production was well received by the children. The evening perfor- mance offered a variety of works both classic and modern. This is one of several events spon- sored by the Abaco Cultural Society. Earlier in December they offered a musical concert featuring local singers as well as professional vocalists. The Free National Movement held a fund raising transportation raffle which cli- maxed on December 8 with a drawing at Sawyer’s Market in Marsh Harbour. Shown above is Jack Albury, President of the South Abaco Branch of the FNM party, read- ing the winning raffle tickets. The winners were Roger Pinder, 1 st place winning a 2001 Daihatsu, Jonathan Cheeatow 2 nd place - bicycle, Sir Durward Knowles 3 rd place - tricicle, Hercules Clarke 4 th place - scooter and Ofnel Anne 5 th place - rollerblades.
