Another Franklin Classic Storybook to delight young readers. AGES: 3-8 AUTHOR: In 1983, Toronto journalist Paulette Bourgeois decided to write a children's book. All she needed was an idea. That idea came one night as she was watching an episode of the television series M*A*S*H. The character of Hawkeye Pierce refused to enter a cave because he was claustrophobic. "I'm so scared that if I were a turtle, I'd be afraid of my own shell," he said. Thus was born Franklin in the Dark, a tale of a little green turtle who's afraid of small dark places, including his own shell. The name of the turtle came, Bourgeois thought, out of the blue. "Now I realize that Hawkeye's full name is Franklin Benjamin Pierce!" Brenda Clark began drawing as a small child and realized by the age of 17 that she wanted to become a commercial artist. She studied Illustration at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, and graduated with an honours diploma in 1977. Shortly afterward, Brenda found that there was plenty of work for a freelancer in educational publishing and her first jobs were for elementary school books. This experience gave her plenty of published examples for her portfolio and a better understanding of how to interpret a story with pictures. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 with a B.Sc. and worked briefly as an occupational therapist before returning to Carleton University to study journalism. Although Paulette is best-known for the Franklinthe Turtle books, she is also the writer of fiction and non-fiction for young readers.     An interview with Paulette Bourgeois Catherine Sheldrick Ross This interview took place while Paulette Bourgeois was in London, Ontar- io, on a reading tour funded by the Canada Council. On Tuesday evening, January 19,1988, the author spoke to the newly formed London Children's Literature Roundtable. A highlight was her reading of a new story, "The old lady with no teeth," in which a young boy disobeys an injunction against going down to the basement (The old lady says, "I wouldn't go down there if I was you. There's a bear down there"). Like Bluebeard's wife, the boy finds out something he'd rather not know. During the inter- view which took place the next day, we talked about this story and what it represents for Paulette Bourgeois's own development as a writer. But we also ranged over a wide number of other topics related to the making of a children's author in Canada: the outstandingly positive critical reception of her first picture boolr (Quill & Quire called Franklin "possibly the season's most endearing picture book character" - Aug. '86); the contri- butions to the final form of picture book made by the editors and the illustrator; the challenge of doing sequels; international markets; journal- ism as a training ground for doing children's nonfiction; and Paulette Bourgeois' own favorite children's books.
