CAPE TO CAPITAL RUN C. A. TOWNEND, Communication Director, North New Zealand Conference

FROM CAPE REINGA, the northernmost tip of New Zealand, to Wellington is a distance of more than 1,200 kilometres. Who would want to run all that way? Meet Albert Sergent, native of Wanganui, but presently a lay minister at Te Kao, our northernmost church. It was there that Brother Sergent decided to make the run, sponsored by Community Services of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, for the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand. Running thirty to forty kilometres each day except Sabbath, Albert left the Cape on August 15, 1982, and arrived in Wellington on September 29 (almost a week ahead of his original plan). Over $4,000 was raised for the National Heart Foundation. It was later presented at a special function honouring Albert. But why all the fuss? Well I should have mentioned that Albert Sergent is seventy-one years of age. All kinds of people joined him on the road, Pathfinders and school groups, the Conference president, Pastor D. B. Hills (who panted out a couple of kilometres near Otorohanga), and a group of soldiers. Those soldiers really tested Albert's style and stamina. Joining him north of Hamilton, those fit young men ran in relays. Albert confessed later, "I wasn't going to let those young fellows know they were putting any pressure on me." At Palmerston North they held a vegetarian dinner to feast him on his way and raised $900 for the National Heart Foundation. Newspapers, radio and television gave Albert's feat headline treatment. Sometimes his wife, Doreen, was featured driving the family Falcon, towing their twenty-one foot caravan with appropriate signs in the windows. When he arrived at Parliament House in Wellington, Albert was accompanied by Pastors Fedorow and Ballis and a group of Wellington Adventists. On the steps of the "House" Albert was met by the Minister of Health, Mr Aussie Malcolm, who shared a congratulatory orange juice with him. Albert Sergent is joined by his son and his grandsons near Postscript to the main run saw Albert run out of Marton and Wanganui, on the "postscript to his Cape to Capital Run. into Wanganui with two different Fun Run groups. Jews had always made it their practice to buy the release of any fellow Jew owned as a slave. But here were Jews depriving other Jews of freedom for the sake of personal gain. Yet the calm, reasoned approach, alluded to earlier, with which Nehemiah met the situation remedied the problem and returned the people to the task at hand. When it became obvious that the task was soon to be completed, the leaders of the surrounding tribes tried a few strategies of their own. Only this time they offered to help. Of course there would need to be some preliminary discussions with Nehemiah to sort out certain details. And the discussions would have to be carried out on their ground. But Nehemiah was not interested in running the risk of being held hostage or even assassinated—even if the work might be completed a few days sooner were they to help. AFTER reading a story in the RECORD of Pathfinders raising funds to go to the Brisbane Camporee, I realised that here in Blenheim, south New Zealand, we have a story of succesful fundraising which is possibly second to none among those who will have attended by the time you read this. Blenheim is a town of around 18,000 people, with a Seventh-day Adventist church member- ship of only fifty. The Pathfinder club comprises eleven Pathfinders, one junior counsellor, two counsellors, a deputy director and director. Six of the Pathfinders and three of the leaders attended the Camporee at Wairoa Gorge in the Auckland province in 1979. From this club, with a total membership of sixteen, only two young Pathfinders and one counsellor will not be going to Brisbane. Three families have three children attending and one other has two, hence the financial burden on individual families was quite substantial. Early in the year a meeting with parents and Pathfinders was held to assess the interest, and while there were some who considered the task too great, the decision from that meeting was THE 1983 that we would plan to go to Brisbane and would begin fundraising with an aim to raise sufficient funds to pay the airfare from New Zealand to BOOK OF THE YEAR Australia and return. We will always be vsateful to those who said it could not be done. These critical times have demanded Their pessimism fired the determination of this book. A local non-Adventist farmer offered pine trees for firewood, and with the help of Pathfinders, parents and willing church members, even grandads, over $3,500 was raised. Sale of produce from a harvest thanksgiving service brought in $158, a garage sale $500, harvesting garlic $143, an elderly member made teddy bears for a total of $100, as well as organising a shop day. Another non-Adventist manufacturer, who employs Adventists of his staff, offered work wrapping and packing lollypops, for the Australian market, if you please, and this activity has produced around $3,500, and is By Lewis R.
