Reconsidering Pitch Centricity STANLEY V. KLEPPINGER Analysts commonly describe the musical focus upon a particular pitch class above all others as pitch centricity. But this seemingly simple concept is complicated by a range of factors. First, pitch centricity can be understood variously as a compositional feature, a perceptual effect arising from specific analytical or listening strategies, or some complex combination thereof. Second, the relation of pitch centricity to the theoretical construct of tonality (in any of its myriad conceptions) is often not consistently or robustly theorized. Finally, various musical contexts manifest or evoke pitch centricity in seemingly countless ways and to differing degrees. This essay examines a range of compositions by Ligeti, Carter, Copland, Bartok, and others to arrive at a more nuanced perspective of pitch centricity - one that takes fuller account of its perceptual foundations, recognizes its many forms and intensities, and addresses its significance to global tonal structure in a given composition. -

Assistant Superintendent Highlights “Mathematics is Everywhere” Take a look around and math is everywhere. From finding the best deal while online shopping to calculating our students’ grades to cooking tonight’s dinner. When we think about math we tend to think about numbers and operations, fractions and decimals, standard algorithms and complicated formulas. But when was the last time you stopped to think about the stories behind the math? The who, the what, the where, the when? Stories connect us. They help us to create a deeper understanding and discover where we fit into the big picture. Have your students ever asked, or maybe you, yourself have wondered, “Why does this matter? When am I ever going to use this?” It’s these questions that show us how critical it is for students to understand both the history of math and the future of math. There are so many people that label the way students today are learning math as the “new way of doing math.” But how “new” is this math? The Ishango bone from Ancient Africa is one of the earliest artifacts of arithmetic, dating back 20,000 years ago. Many similarities can be found when comparing our base-10 number system to the base-20 number system Ancient Mayans used. Using shells to represent zero, dots to represent ones, and sticks to represent a groups of five, Mayans were able to calculate mathematical problems such as the length of the solar year. -

Roth Department of Biology, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112 Manuscript received June 16, 1995 Accepted for publication October 4, 1995 ABSTRACT We have examined the distribution of cobalamin (coenzyme BI2) synthetic ability and cobalamin- dependent metabolism among entericbacteria. Most species of enteric bacteria tested synthesize cobala- min under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions and ferment glycerol in a cobalamindependent fashion. The group of species including Escha'chia coli and Salmonella typhimurium cannot ferment glyc- erol. E. coli strains cannot synthesize cobalamin de novo, and Salmonella spp. synthesize cobalamin only under anaerobic conditions. In addition, the cobalamin synthetic genes of Salmonella spp. (cob) show a regulatory pattern different from that of other enteric taxa tested. We propose that the cobalamin synthetic genes, as well asgenes providing cobalamindependent diol dehydratase, were lostby a common ancestor of E. coli and Salmonella spp. and were reintroduced as a single fragment into the Salmonella lineage from an exogenous source. Consistent with this hypothesis, the S. typhimurium cob genes do not hybridize with the genomes of other enteric species. The Salmonella cob operon may represent a class of genes characterized by periodic loss and reacquisition by host genomes. This process may be an important aspect of bacterial population genetics and evolution.
