w How to find a Bible Reading if you are unsure or get lost!

▪ Check the index in your Bible to find out if it numbers all the pages consecutively or starts again for the New Testament ▪ Before the first Reading is from the Old Testament. After Easter all but the Psalms are from the New Testament. ▪ Look at the name of the book that you need to find. Numbers before the name of the book are part of the name (to distinguish between multiple books with the same name e.g. 1 & 2 Samuel; 1 & 2 Corinthians; 1,2 & 3 John etc. ▪ Use the index to find which page the book you are looking for starts on and turn to that page. ▪ The first number after the name of the book (before the dot) is the chapter number. ▪ Most bibles use a large print number in the text at the beginning of each chapter. Many also write the book name and chapters on that page at the top of each page to help you find your way around (This is especially helpful in the longer books). ▪ Turn over the pages until you find the start of the chapter you are looking for. ▪ The numbers after the ‘v’ are the verse numbers, which are indicated by small numbers in the text often raised above the line of the text to stop them interrupting the flow of reading. Once you’ve found the chapter look for the verses that you need to start and end at. ▪ A comma between verses means that you skip a section, ‘a’ or ‘b’ means first or last sentence of the verse. ▪ Don’t worry if you don’t find exactly the right passage as St Paul assure us in 2 Timothy 3 v16 that “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” so whatever you read will help you to grow closer to God! ▪ (G) denotes the Gospel Reading e.g. (G)Matthew 1 v1 – 7 etc.

2 A Reflective Service for Worship in Isolation We come from scattered lives to meet with God. Let us recognise God’s presence with us now.

Keep a short silence, still your heart. As God’s people we have gathered; Let us worship God now together, Let us Pray The weight of grief bears heavily upon us but it is a load we need not bear alone. Let us offer our burden to .

Lord of life and of death, of the present and of the future. We bring before you, Lord, our confusion in the face of shock, our despair in the face of tragedy, our helplessness in the face of loss and death. Lift from us our burden, All and in your power, renew us.

We bring before you, Lord, the tears of sorrow, the cries for help, the vulnerability of pain. Lift from us our burden, All and in your power, renew us.

We bring before you, Lord, our sense of frustration, our feeling of powerlessness, our fears for the future. Lift from us our burden, All and in your power, renew us.

God of the desolate and despairing, your Son Jesus Christ was forced to carry the instrument of his own death - the cross that became for us the source of life and healing. Transform us in our suffering that in our uncertainty and anxiety you might be for us a fount of life and a spring of hope; through him who died for us, yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. All Amen.

3 Words of Comfort

Hear these words of comfort which the Lord our God offers to all in trouble and distress:

A short silence is kept between each of the readings

The Israelites groaned under their slavery and cried out. Out of the slavery their cry for help rose up to God. God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God looked upon the Israelites, and God took notice of them. Exodus 2 v23b-25

Jesus said 'Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.' Matthew 11 v28-30

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. Isaiah 43 v2-3a

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8 v38-39

Keep a short silence as you prepare to confess your sins to God Confession Lord God, our maker and our redeemer, this is your world and we are your people: come among us and save us. We have wilfully misused your gifts of creation; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin.

We have seen the ill-treatment of others and have not gone to their aid because their suffering has not mattered to us. Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin.

We have condoned evil and dishonesty and failed to strive for justice; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. We have heard the good news of Christ, but have failed to share it with others; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. 4 We have not loved you with all our heart, nor our neighbours as ourselves; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin.

Absolution May God who loved the world so much that he sent his Son to be our Saviour forgive us our sins and make us holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Lighting a Candle (Safely)

We light this candle to remind us that when God the Father raised Jesus from the dead he defeated the power of death, and his light shines in the midst of the darkness of this world.

The candle is lit as a sign of the hope of resurrection.

May the light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds. All Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have defeated death, and set your people free. You are the Saviour of the world.

We gather our prayers together in the words of The Collect Prayer Find Collects and Bible readings for Sundays on page 10

We affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

5 Amen.

We intercede for others in the quiet of our hearts. Lord, meet us in the silence and hear our prayer. All Amen. Silence for prayer is kept: Talk to Jesus as you would open your heart to a trusted friend Pray for yourself in your isolation, that God would sit with you. Pray for others of all ages in our community in their loneliness and confusion. Pray for those who are supporting all who are self-isolating, anxious and afraid. Pray for all in our nation whose daily lives and futures are changed by the decisions of others Pray for the world that nations and their leaders would come together for the common good in researching, testing, delivering and administering a vaccine. Pray for us as One Church in the Benefice, as we serve one another and our neighbours. As we adapt to doing church differently, pray that faith will be sustained and all we offer to our community will be welcomed by all and blessed by God for his purposes. All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Take a moment of silence, breathe deeply and rest before continuing. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your heart your brothers and sisters who will be praying the Lord’s Prayer today in the Benefice. Conclusion Jesus, Lord of time, hold us in your eternity. Jesus, image of God, travel with us the life of faith. Jesus, friend of sinners, heal the brokenness of our world. Jesus, lord of tomorrow, draw us into your future. Amen. Amen.

As we ‘bless the Lord’, let us do so with our brothers and sisters whose absence we lament and for whose presence we long.

6 Let us bless the Lord All Thanks be to God. Service Ends.

An Order for the Office of Compline - Night Prayer The office of Compline (Night prayer) comes from an ancient practice of daily prayers by Christian monastic communities. It is a good way to end the day in quiet contemplation and reflection upon the past day before commending oneself to God and a peaceful night’s sleep. The office should be said before going to bed in a quiet and calm way; a candle may be lit (safely) and you might like to sing the simple hymn. The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. All Amen. Our help is in the name of the Lord All who made heaven and earth. A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow. All Most merciful God, we confess to you, before the whole company of heaven and one another, that we have sinned in thought, word and deed and in what we have failed to do. Forgive us our sins, heal us by your Spirit and raise us to new life in Christ. Amen. The following hymn may be said. Before the ending of the day, Creator of the world, we pray That you, with steadfast love, would keep Your watch around us while we sleep. From evil dreams defend our sight, From fears and terrors of the night; Tread underfoot our deadly foe That we no sinful thought may know. O Father, that we ask be done Through Jesus Christ, your only Son; And Holy Spirit, by whose breath Our souls are raised to life from death. 9 The following psalm may be used Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who stand by night in the house of the Lord! Lift up your hands to the holy place, and bless the Lord. May the Lord, maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion. (Psalm 134 v1-3)

At the end of the Psalm, the following is said All Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

The following short lesson or another suitable passage is read The servants of the Lamb shall see the face of God, whose name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night: they will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 22 v.4,5)

The following responsory may be said: Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. All Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. For you have redeemed me, Lord God of truth. All I commend my spirit. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. All Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Save us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ asleep may rest in peace.

The Nunc dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is said Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace: your word has been fulfilled. My own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people. A light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. (Luke 2 v29-32)

All Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Prayers of intercession and thanksgivings may be offered here.

10 See p.17ff Silence may be kept. Visit this place, O Lord, we pray, and drive far from it the snares of the enemy; may your holy angels dwell with us and guard us in peace, and may your blessing be always upon us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The Lord's Prayer may be said.

All Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

In peace we will lie down and sleep; All for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety. Abide with us, Lord Jesus, All for the night is at hand and the day is now past. As the night watch looks for the morning, All so do we look for you, O Christ. The Lord bless us and watch over us; the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us; the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. All Amen. Office ends
