Saoirse Markham Baptism Service St Michael & All Angels, Lyndhurst Christ Church, Emery Down All Saints’, Minstead WORSHIP TOGETHER A Benefice Resource for Worshipping at Home Drawing Near to God, Delighting in Each Other “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not Contents be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Page Isaiah 40:31. A reflective service: for worship in isolation 3 How to find a bible reading 6 CONTENTS A Reflective Service: for Worship in Isolation 3 Bible Readings and Collects for Sundays 7 An Order for the Office of Compline 9 Various prayers for you to use 11 Prayer on TV, Radio and the internet 13 If you are lonely whilst self-isolating 14 w How to find a Bible Reading if you are unsure or get lost! ▪ Check the index in your Bible to find out if it numbers all the pages consecutively or starts again for the New Testament ▪ Before Easter the first Reading is from the Old Testament. After Easter all but the Psalms are from the New Testament. ▪ Look at the name of the book that you need to find. Numbers before the name of the book are part of the name (to distinguish between multiple books with the same name e.g. 1 & 2 Samuel; 1 & 2 Corinthians; 1,2 & 3 John etc. ▪ Use the index to find which page the book you are looking for starts on and turn to that page. ▪ The first number after the name of the book (before the dot) is the chapter number. ▪ Most bibles use a large print number in the text at the beginning of each chapter. Many also write the book name and chapters on that page at the top of each page to help you find your way around (This is especially helpful in the longer books). ▪ Turn over the pages until you find the start of the chapter you are looking for. ▪ The numbers after the ‘v’ are the verse numbers, which are indicated by small numbers in the text often raised above the line of the text to stop them interrupting the flow of reading. Once you’ve found the chapter look for the verses that you need to start and end at. ▪ A comma between verses means that you skip a section, ‘a’ or ‘b’ means first or last sentence of the verse. ▪ Don’t worry if you don’t find exactly the right passage as St Paul assure us in 2 Timothy 3 v16 that “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” so whatever you read will help you to grow closer to God! ▪ (G) denotes the Gospel Reading e.g. (G)Matthew 1 v1 – 7 etc. 2 A Reflective Service for Worship in Isolation We come from scattered lives to meet with God. Let us recognise God’s presence with us now. Keep a short silence, still your heart. As God’s people we have gathered; Let us worship God now together, Let us Pray The weight of grief bears heavily upon us but it is a load we need not bear alone. Let us offer our burden to Jesus. Lord of life and of death, of the present and of the future. We bring before you, Lord, our confusion in the face of shock, our despair in the face of tragedy, our helplessness in the face of loss and death. Lift from us our burden, All and in your power, renew us. We bring before you, Lord, the tears of sorrow, the cries for help, the vulnerability of pain. Lift from us our burden, All and in your power, renew us. We bring before you, Lord, our sense of frustration, our feeling of powerlessness, our fears for the future. Lift from us our burden, All and in your power, renew us. God of the desolate and despairing, your Son Jesus Christ was forced to carry the instrument of his own death - the cross that became for us the source of life and healing. Transform us in our suffering that in our uncertainty and anxiety you might be for us a fount of life and a spring of hope; through him who died for us, yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. All Amen. 3 Words of Comfort Hear these words of comfort which the Lord our God offers to all in trouble and distress: A short silence is kept between each of the readings The Israelites groaned under their slavery and cried out. Out of the slavery their cry for help rose up to God. God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God looked upon the Israelites, and God took notice of them. Exodus 2 v23b-25 Jesus said 'Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.' Matthew 11 v28-30 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. Isaiah 43 v2-3a For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8 v38-39 Keep a short silence as you prepare to confess your sins to God Confession Lord God, our maker and our redeemer, this is your world and we are your people: come among us and save us. We have wilfully misused your gifts of creation; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. We have seen the ill-treatment of others and have not gone to their aid because their suffering has not mattered to us. Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. We have condoned evil and dishonesty and failed to strive for justice; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. We have heard the good news of Christ, but have failed to share it with others; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. 4 We have not loved you with all our heart, nor our neighbours as ourselves; Lord, be merciful: All forgive us our sin. Absolution May God who loved the world so much that he sent his Son to be our Saviour forgive us our sins and make us holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. Lighting a Candle (Safely) We light this candle to remind us that when God the Father raised Jesus from the dead he defeated the power of death, and his light shines in the midst of the darkness of this world. The candle is lit as a sign of the hope of resurrection. May the light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds. All Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have defeated death, and set your people free. You are the Saviour of the world. We gather our prayers together in the words of The Collect Prayer Find Collects and Bible readings for Sundays on page 10 We affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 5 Amen. We intercede for others in the quiet of our hearts. Lord, meet us in the silence and hear our prayer. All Amen. Silence for prayer is kept: Talk to Jesus as you would open your heart to a trusted friend Pray for yourself in your isolation, that God would sit with you. Pray for others of all ages in our community in their loneliness and confusion. Pray for those who are supporting all who are self-isolating, anxious and afraid. Pray for all in our nation whose daily lives and futures are changed by the decisions of others Pray for the world that nations and their leaders would come together for the common good in researching, testing, delivering and administering a vaccine. Pray for us as One Church in the Benefice, as we serve one another and our neighbours. As we adapt to doing church differently, pray that faith will be sustained and all we offer to our community will be welcomed by all and blessed by God for his purposes. All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

1 2 THE MAGAZINE OF MARLBOROUGH'S COMMUNITY AND CHURCHES NUMBER 657 MARCH 2016 Windows, War and Wishes Apologies for the fact that this month's edition is a bit more of a hotch-potch than usual, but as they say "variety is the spice of life"! We start with an article about a tragic story commemorated in stained glass in one of the windows in St Mary's church, a place I have worshipped in for the past nineteen years but have never stopped to look. I suspect that this may well be true for many of us, and I hope in future months to make similar occasional contributions about items of interest in our churches which we perhaps take for granted - and would welcome such contributions from any of our far more knowledgeable readers. Secondly, we have a fine collection of photographs from the Marlborough History Society telling something of the story of our town one hundred years ago. These photos have already been exhibited twice in the past eighteen months, but I wanted them to have as wide an exposure as possible because I think they are so interesting. And finally, a Bucket List of must-do-before-I-die things from ten different people to whom I am most grateful for being prepared to reveal in public their deepest desires. The hope is that it will not only be of interest to our readers in perhaps opening your eyes to something that you hadn't thought of for yourself, but also that it might prompt further contributions from our readership of items from your own list which you might be prepared to share with others - the more obscure the better! David Du Croz - Editor Cover picture: Memorial window, St Mary’s Church, Marlborough 1 Compiler: Peter Noble Proof readers: Mike Jackson & Julia Peel Clergy Letter from The Reverend Dr David Campbell Life in all its fullness It’s a very wonderful thing that each and every year we are fortunate enough to be alive as the natural world as we see it in our fields, gardens and parks renews itself.

  • St Michael & All Angels Church
Lent St Michael & All Angels Lent is a time of spiritual preparation for the great celebration of the Resurrection of Christ at Easter. The season lasts 40 days reflecting Christ’s time in the wilderness, and concludes with the dramatic events of Holy Week. During this time, all Christians are called to a profound reflection and a deep examination of their spiritual lives. This year our Lenten theme is to explore the scriptural, theological and historical origins of our distinctive ‘Anglo-Catholic’ or ‘High-Church’ tradition, which is so important to St Michael’s, and why people worship with us. Why does it appeal? Where does it come from? What does it mean? In this, and other ways, we will further our discipleship as Christians, understanding better who we are as individuals and as a Church community. There is something for everyone to engage with in what is offered in our Lent programme. From sermons and discussions, to books and quiet mornings, worship, prayer and cultural outings. May you find something to help you walk with Christ on the Way of the Cross, so that when Easter comes you may rise with Him in joy. Father Stephen Lent Worship and Prayer During Lent, as well as our Sunday services, there are some special services and events that pick up on the spirituality of the season. Ash Wednesday - 1st March This solemn day marks the beginning of Lent and is an important day for all Christians to come to church and begin their spiritual journey towards Easter. 12.00 noon: Mass with Imposition of Ashes 8.00pm: Sung Mass with Imposition of Ashes Preacher: The Vicar Stations of the Cross: Fridays, 6.00pm Meditations on the 14 stages of Christ’s journey to the Cross using scripture, poetry, images and reflections.
