O'Brien ... ewslener Editor Robert Haack The ~tichigan Emomological Society traces its origins to the old Detroit Entomological Society and was organized on 4 :>iovember 1954 to "...promote the science of entomology in all its branches and by all feasible means, and to advance cooperation and good fellowship among persons interested in entomology." The Society attempts to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information in both amateur and professional circles, and encourages the study of insects by youth. Membership in the Society, which serves the North Central States and adjacent Canada, is open to all persons interested in entomology. There are four paying classes of membership: Student (including those currently enrolled as college sophomores) - annual dues $4.00 Active-annual dues $8.00 lnstitutional-annual dues $20.00 Sustaining-annual contribution $25.00 or more Life-$J60.oo Dues are paid on a calendar year basis (Jan. I-Dec. 31). Memberships accepted before July I shall begin on the preceding January I; memberships accepted at a later date shall begin the following January I unless the earlier date is requested and the required dues are paid. Hartl, 2, Richard B. HaU , and Roger D. Hanna2 ABSTRACT The European alder leafminer, Fenusa dohrnii, is a defoliating insect pest of Alnus in short-rotation forest plantations. A 2-year study was performed to quan­ tify movement from infested stands to uninfested areas. Sticky traps and potted monitor trees were installed at different locations within and at various distances from (0,5, 10, and 20 m) an infested stand to measure adult flight and oviposition activity, respectively. Trap catch and oviposition activity fell off sharply with dis­ tance, few insects being trapped or eggs laid at distances of 5 m or greater from the infestation. The genus Alnus, the alders, has been considered a promising group for biomass plantations because of its rapid growth and symbiotic nitrogen-fixing capabilities. Genetic improvement work with Alnus began at Iowa State University in 1976 with a range-wide collection of germplasm for European black alder, A. glutinosa Gaertn. (Hall et al. 1983). Selected populations of other Alnus species have been grown here as well. In 1982, the European alder leafminer, Fenusa dohmii (Tischbein) (Hymenop­ tera: Tenthredinidae), began developing as a pest in our local plantations (Hart et al. 1991). By 1985, much defoliation was obvious, prompting concern about the impact of the insect on the plantations and possible management measures. Because little was known about the insect in the north-central United States, a series of studies was initiated in 1986 to define the.field biology and impact of the insect in the plantation environment. Sustained yield from biomass plantations involves having all growth and coppice­ regrowth stages of trees present at various proximities within the growing area. Tree growth and survivorship are especially sensitive to growing conditions, including defoliation effects, in the first 2 years after planting (Meridian Corporation, 1986). The ability of F. dohrnii to move from infested to uninfested, newly-planted stands can thus determine, in part, the impact that it may have on the plantations and how they should be designed. When a plantation is cut, the first adult flight of European alder leafminer in the spring precedes most of the resprouting of stems and leaves on the cut alder stumps (Hart et al. 1991). This provides an opportunity to reduce the leafminer population significantly in the area for a time. Reinfestation, however, may occur from late­ emerging insects and from adjacent uncut stands. Adult dispersal is therefore impor­ tant in the reinfestation of harvested areas. Because only the adult stage of the leafminer is capable of significant interplant movement, a study was designed to quantify adult movement from known infested stands to uninfested areas. The major objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the distances that the insect can migrate in significant numbers from infested stands to uninfested areas and (2) to use this information to project practical planting distances from such infested areas. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research was performed in central Iowa at the Iowa State University Rhodes Experimental Farm. The plantation site lies in a narrow stream valley, surrounded by low, forested hills. The site is well-buffered from the prevailing winds, which in the growing season are mostly from the southeast. The first alders were planted at this location in 1979, with additional plantings added each year as needed by the breeding and selection program. In 1987, two infested, unharvested plantings were selected as European alder leafminer source areas (Fig. 1). Four replications were established, two at Unit 4 of the 1979 provenance test plantings and two at the 1981 clonal trial plantings. Each replication was organized along a transect line away from a planting into an open, grassy field. For each area, a single monitor station was established within the planting. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. Guppy – Research Scientist January 31, 2000 2 Abstract This study was undertaken to learn more of the distribution, status and habitat requirements of B.C. macrolepidoptera (butterflies and the larger moths), the group of insects given the highest priority by the BC Environment Conservation Center. The study was conducted in the Chilcotin District near Williams Lake and Riske Creek in central B.C. The study area contains a wide variety of habitats, including rare habitat types that elsewhere occur only in the Lillooet-Lytton area of the Fraser Canyon and, in some cases, the Southern Interior. Specimens were collected with light traps and by aerial net. A total of 538 species of macrolepidoptera were identified during the two years of the project, which is 96% of the estimated total number of species in the study area. There were 29,689 specimens collected, and 9,988 records of the number of specimens of each species captured on each date at each sample site. A list of the species recorded from the Chilcotin is provided, with a summary of provincial and global distributions. The habitats, at site series level as TEM mapped, are provided for each sample. A subset of the data was provided to the Ministry of Forests (Research Section, Williams Lake) for use in a Flamulated Owl study. A voucher collection of 2,526 moth and butterfly specimens was deposited in the Royal BC Museum. There were 25 species that are rare in BC, with most known only from the Riske Creek area.

Fennica 2: 157- 173. As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi­ lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye.

The average amounts of Z5 – 12:OH, Z5 – 12:Ac, and Z5 – 14:Ac in a single sex pheromone gland of a calling moth were (7.14 ± 0.73) ng, (54.20 ± 0.34) ng, and (38.70 ± 0.46) ng, re- spectively. Electroantennography (EAG) of these compounds and their analogues demon- strated that Z5 – 12:Ac excitated the largest male EAG response, followed by Z5 – 14:Ac. Traps baited with rubber septa impregnated with Z5 – 12:Ac (500 μg/septum) and Z5 – 14:Ac (300 μg/septum) were more effective than traps with other baits or virgin females. Addition of Z5 – 12:OH to rubber septa did not enhance the trap catches, but (E,Z)-3,5-dodecadienyl acetate (E3,Z5 – 12:Ac) enhanced the trap catch.
