Portrait artist Eddie Risiba adds the fi nishing touches to a portrait. Artist Eddie has a knack for portraits Anne Molope

IT WAS in 1993 when Edward Eddie Risiba witnessed his art teacher, Meren Sabela, draw a portrait and coincidentally in this moment, he realised his artistic potential and talent. After realising his potential, he formed an interest in portrait art in 1998. Although he had no formal art education, he taught himself, worked his way up and excelled in his craft. “I believe practice makes perfect and not everything can be taught in school. If you’re born with a specifi c talent or skill, no one can take it away from you because that is the gift God blessed you with,” he said. Growing up in a small village called Nkambako-Maweni, Eddie did not grow up like many other boys who played soccer as a past time. “A pencil was my soccer ball and a drawing book was my football ground. I’m a former amateur boxer, I used to train with the late Jacob Baby Jake Matlala at Dube Boxing Club. I swapped boxing gloves with art after having fi nancial diffi culties,” he explained. He has sketched a number of portraits for prominent fi gures such as Chief Nwa’Mitwa, Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager, Bobie Motaung, property magnate David Mabilu, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper , former Kaizer Chiefs defender Jimmy Tau, television personalities Romeo and Basetsana Khumalo and South African football midfi elder for SuperSport United FC Reneilwe Letsholonyane. “It’s not easy to get a breakthrough in the arts industry. First, you have to respect your work and clients, and they will give you the same amount of respect. You have to master your skills, then your work will market and speak for itself. Though I did not learn arts at school, talent alone is not enough, you need education to know the business side of this industry and avoid being exploited,” he explained. Eddie is now working as a full time portrait artist at Savannah Mall.
