Phosa: Economic inequality is the most significant outstanding transformation issue (1.00/2) “Therefore all of us… in the spirit of the Constitution should‚ we can and must make it work. “However‚ for economic transformation to take hold in South Africa‚ we must most importantly change our focus into teaching each other with dignity and concentrate in furthering the process of achieving economic equality‚” said Phosa. Phosa was a guest speaker on day two of the Vison 2030 Summit at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Thursday. He said the nation should work on building a culture of nonracialism. "South Africa is a hugely unequal society when it comes to economic prosperity. It remains the most significant outstanding issue on our agenda of liberation and political and economic transformation. It is‚ however‚ something that we must change as a nation‚ across all political‚ racial and economic divides‚” he added. Although he acknowledged past racial stereotypes‚ Phosa said perceptions and preconceived ideas about each other still persist. He said this was perpetuated by a lack of mutual respect in general. Phosa is known to be an outspoken politician who played an important role in the struggle against apartheid. Earlier this week‚ he said that Nkandla is a product of “a culture of immunity and impunity” that has taken hold of South Africa. Speaking during a radio interview‚ Phosa said that a lot has changed since the ANC came to power back in 1994. "There is a lot of corruption. It has become systemic in municipal government‚ provincial government and national government. Corruption is systemic. "And what do we do? Instead of hitting the corruption at the heart‚ we protect one another. We introduce a culture of immunity and impunity. And it’s wrong for the ANC to do that‚" he said. President Jacob Zuma was found to be in contravention of his oath of office and the Constitution of the republic‚ yet Parliament had failed in its duty to act against him. Also present at the summit was Minister in the Presidency and chairperson of the National Planning Commission Jeff Radebe. Other prominent speakers included Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba and commissioner of the South African Revenue Service Tom Moyane. – TMG Digital/TMG Local Government

DA set to launch ‘censored’ campaign ad (1.00/2) The launch of the commercial‚ which will take place in Crossroads in Nyanga‚ comes a day after the DA said it had “been reliably informed that SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has now banned the reading of newspaper headlines on all SABC radio stations”. “The reading of the morning’s newspaper headlines is a practice on radio and TV stations worldwide‚ particularly on news and talk radio‚ as a method to review stories currently in the news cycle‚” the party said. “The banning of the reading of newspapers can only be viewed as yet another attempt by Motsoeneng to censor any negative news stories about the African National Congress (ANC) on SABC radio stations ahead of the local government election.” This‚ the party claimed‚ “is part of an on-going programme driven by Motsoeneng to only portray ‘sunshine news’ about the ANC on SABC stations”. Other actions claimed by the party include the “attempted banning of call- ins; the canning of Vuyo Mvoko’s talk show‚ the canning of ‘The Editors’ on SAfm; banning of footage of violent protests; and censorship and delaying of opposition TV adverts”. The public broadcaster had said it would not flight the DA’s advert until all parties participating in the August 3 polls had been confirmed by the Independent Electoral Commission. Just over a week ago‚ the DA posted the ad on its YouTube channel.

Sacked KZN MEC calls it quits on politics (1.00/2) The former economic development‚ tourism and environmental affairs MEC joined the legislature in 1994‚ and spent 17 of his 22 years there as an MEC. Mabuyakhulu first rose to prominence in 1999 when then Premier Lionel Mtshali appointed him as MEC for economic development and tourism‚ a position which had been vacated by President Jacob Zuma‚ who had just been appointed as deputy president of the country. Speaking to Gagasi99.5fm on Monday night‚ Mabuyakhulu said it was business as usual for him. "I want to thank the movement‚ the ANC (African National Congress) for the opportunity it gave me to serve. I want to thank business‚ labour and all other stakeholders‚" he said. He gave no indication of his next move. "I feel I have done all in my power and to my best ability. I will retreat and pursue other interest. I feel perhaps it's time to look elsewhere. I have full confidence in the incoming leadership‚" said the former ANC treasurer. Mabuyakhulu was replaced by ANC provincial chair Sihle Zikalala in an announcement made by Premier Willies Mchunu at a press briefing on Monday morning. He also named former ANC Youth League provincial leader Mxolisi Kaunda as the new MEC for transport‚ safety and liaison - the position recently vacated by himself. Perhaps the most surprise inclusion into cabinet was firebrand and provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party Themba Mthembu takes over from Cyril Xaba as MEC for agriculture and rural development. - TMG Digital/Sunday Times

5 Faf de Klerk only new cap in the Bok starting side to face Ireland on Saturday (1.00/2) Coach ‚ in his first game in charge since taking over from Heyneke Meyer‚ has blended youth and experience for what will be a testing challenge. Coetzee also awarded a first start to flank after 13 Test appearances as a substitute while centre Lionel Mapoe will also start for the first time following one appearance off the bench against the All Blacks in 2015. On the bench‚ hooker Bongi Mbonambi could also make his Test debut if he gets on the field while prop Julian Redelinghuys is in from the cold after playing two Tests in 2014. It’s a callow and experimental backline with only flyhalf Pat Lambie and wing JP Pietersen boasting more than 50 Test caps. Willie le Roux continues at fullback with Lwazi Mvovo on the wing while the midfield pair of and Mapoe have never played together. Similarly De Klerk and Lambie have only ever eyed each other from opposite sides of the field. But Coetzee has opted for an experienced forward pack with six survivors that lost the World Cup semi-final to the All Blacks returning for this battle. No 8 ‚ flank Francois Louw‚ locks and Lood de Jager and props Tendai Mtawarira and all started at Twickenham eight months ago. Hooker Adriaan Strauss‚ who was on the bench that fateful November day‚ starts and will lead his country for the first time while lock Pieter-Steph du Toit and flyhalf Elton Jantjies came through late fitness tests to take their places on the bench. 7 Enocent Mkhabela on his way out of Supersport United (0.01/2) The 27-year-old was a key figure under former United coach ‚ but has been discarded to the sidelines since the arrival of Briton . He has not featured at all since January‚ so it comes as little surprise then that with the impending arrival of Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Cole Alexander‚ Mkhabela has been deemed surplus to requirements. “SuperSport had an option to extend his contract but had to exercise that by May 31 and they failed to do so‚” the player’s agent Tim Sukazi told Times Media Digital. “It means he will become a free agent and be able to join a club of his choice. We are currently looking at options for him.” Mkhabela joined SuperSport from Platinum Stars ahead of the 2013/14 season‚ following coach Cavin Johnson from the North West province. He had been a key figure in helping Dikwena to second in the league the previous season and his signature was much sought-after. He started the 2014 final for SuperSport against his former club and ended up with a winners’ medal in a 3-2 victory. His last match for SuperSport was the 1-0 home win over Free State Stars on January 30.

Lasers to the rescue of Cape Town's 'punchbag' railway bridge In the first eight days of June‚ however‚ the battered 2.5m bridge over Atlantic Road has not picked up any new scars‚ and the City of Cape Town hopes that is due to technology which detects the approach of high vehicles and warns them of the low bridge ahead. The R300,000 3D laser system developed by a local company has been installed above the northbound carriageway of Main Road‚ about 150m from the intersection with Atlantic Road. Cape Town's mayoral committee member for transport‚ Brett Herron‚ said the system used an infrared laser beam to read the height of the vehicles and their load. "Should it detect that a vehicle in the turning lane is higher than 2.5m from the road surface‚ a warning system is triggered at the intersection with Atlantic Road. A signboard with high-power LED lights will flash for about 30 seconds‚ indicating to the driver that their vehicle is too high to cross underneath the railway bridge‚" said Herron. "Although it is too early to determine the success rate of the new warning system‚ it is noteworthy that no crashes have occurred since 1 June 2016 when the system started operating. " Two more laser detection systems are planned: one above the southbound carriageway of Main Road for traffic approaching Atlantic Road from Steenberg‚ and another above Atlantic Road for traffic approaching the railway bridge from the eastern side. "These roll-outs will happen as soon as we have determined the success rate of the first system‚" said Herron.

Spain beaten by Georgia in final Euro 2016 warmup Tornike Okriashvili tapped in from close range in the 39th minute to secure a surprise victory for Georgia at Getafe's Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium. Spain, who have won the last two European Championships, had not lost since being beaten in a friendly by the Netherlands in March 2015 and came into their final warmup match after convincing wins against Bosnia and South Korea. The hosts, however, lacked a cutting edge against a well-organised Georgia side who defended deep after taking the lead. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque made eight changes to the side that beat South Korea 6-1 last week, with Real Madrid's Lucas Vazquez making his senior debut, while Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea also started. The hosts dominated possession and nearly scored in the 27th minute when Vazquez found Thiago Alcantara in the area, but his right-footed shot rebounded off the far post. Georgia went ahead against the run of play when a defensive mistake from Jordi Alba allowed the visitors to steal the ball in midfield. Jambul Jighauri surged into the area before teeing up an unmarked Okriashvili in the six-yard box for an easy tap-in. Del Bosque brought on Andres Iniesta, Coke, Hector Bellerin and Mikel San Jose at halftime, but Georgia defended deeply and forced Spain into speculative long-range shots with Nolito's 25-metre effort going just wide. A superb cross from substitute David Silva in the 69th minute found Alba in the six-yard box but his first-time shot lacked power and his attempt was saved by substitute goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili. The home side continued to press forward but lacked the finishing touch against a well-marshalled Georgian rearguard. Spain travel to France on Wednesday and begin the defence of their title against the Czech Republic on June 13 in Toulouse. They also face Turkey and Croatia in Group D.

Zuma to discuss regional trade issues in Lesotho Zuma is the chair of the SACU Summit‚ which is an African regional economic organisation whose member states are Botswana‚ Lesotho‚ Namibia‚ South Africa and Swaziland. The Presidency on Tuesday said the consultations to be held in Lesotho were a follow-up to discussions held by SACU heads of state and government at the inauguration of the new headquarters building in Windhoek in November last year. “The discussions will also focus on progress in the implementation of the SACU work programme as adopted by the 2011 SACU Summit‚” spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga said. “The deliberations will also consider regional‚ continental and global economic and trade developments and their impact on SACU.” SACU‚ at 105 years old‚ is one of the oldest customs unions in the world. On his visit to Lesotho‚ Zuma will be accompanied by International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane‚ Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. In April this year‚ Zuma travelled to Botswana‚ Namibia and Swaziland for similar consultations on SACU. According to SACU’s website‚ the economic structure linked member states by a single tariff and no customs duties between them. It has been a busy year for Zuma who has travelled to around 14 countries since January. Questions have been raised concerning the presidential jet‚ which has reportedly had some technical difficulties. While in Qatar last month‚ the presidential plane‚ Inkwazi‚ broke down which resulted in an alternative aircraft having to be sourced to enable Zuma to return home. Shortly after that there were reports that the president refused to fly because he allegedly feared he was being sabotaged. However‚ the Presidency denied this saying the reports were misleading. “The Presidency requested that a reliable aircraft be made available on 23 May 2016 in order to avoid another inconvenience too soon after Qatar‚” it said at the time. In March this year‚ Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed that her department would acquire a new presidential jet‚ but denied that there was a preferred option or that an amount of R4-billion. – TMG Digital/BDlive

DA: Parliament must call SABC to account over ‘rampant censorship’ after SAfm show axed The party’s Phumzile van Damme said on Tuesday that “censorship at the SABC ahead of the local government election has reached crisis proportions” after its spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago on Monday night confirmed the axing of the show. Kganyago said he didn’t understand the furore over the issue‚ and said it was part of a “revamping” and “The Editors” was an “old” show dating back to the 1980s. Van Damme countered that it “is a very popular programme on SAfm on Sunday mornings where the political events of the week are critically analysed‚ debated and discussed by newspaper journalists and editors”. “The programme has been a bone of contention for the ANC for many years as its poor record as a governing party is often discussed‚” she said. “Through the years the ANC has attempted to have the show canned‚ and failed.” Van Damme said the “DA will be calling on the Portfolio Committee on Communications to return to Parliament in order to be fully briefed by the SABC’s management on the rampant censorship”. She cited other examples of censorship under chief executive officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng as being the “attempted banning of call-ins‚ the canning of Vuyo Mvoko’s talk show‚ banning of footage of violent protests and the censorship of DA adverts”.

16 Long break could be AmaTuks' salvation in the playoffs AmaTuks lost their playoff opener 1-0 to National First Division side United on May 29 but after nearly two weeks on the sidelines due to the international break‚ they resume with a must-win fixture against Highlands Park on Saturday. Bartlett said the break has allowed his team to work on a number of things following the United loss in which they hit the woodwork three times‚ but also conceded a penalty that was missed. “Based on the result [against Mbombela] you would say this break has helped us a lot‚” Bartlett told Times Media. “We have done our postmortem‚ had time to reflect on the things that should have happened in the game and have also looked ahead to Highlands Park. “Our next match is a must-win game‚ if we lose … you would have to say that is that. But the good thing is that things are still in our hands and we just have to go out there and win. " Bartlett says his side have no new injury concerns‚ but that they will miss suspended forward Thabo Nemukondeni‚ who received a red card in the final league match of the campaign against Lamontville Golden Arrows. “Missing him is a blow not only because of his ability but also the fact that he gives 110 percent out there. Beating teams in the NFD is not about tactics‚ its about attitude and the effort the players put into their performances. “You have to work very hard and he certainly does that‚” Bartlett concluded.

Amber Rose gets monthly R200k divorce settlement, celebrates at strip club with Wiz The pair - who have three-year-old son Sebastian together - came to an amicable agreement on their assets and filed the paperwork in court on Monday before heading to the Ace of Spades strip club in Los Angeles. According to the terms of the agreement, obtained by TMZ, Amber will receive a once off amount of R14,9 million and R221,000 a month in child support for Sebastian, who the couple will share physical and legal custody of while Wiz keeps their Pennsylvania home and 10 cars. Amber, 32, previously revealed she and Wiz were working on maintaining a friendship for the sake of their little boy. She said: ''I think that we just wanted different things in our lives. Being married in the public is not easy. Having access to pretty much any and everything we want is not easy. We still love each other. ''Right now we're just working on co-parenting and learning how to be friends. He's at my house a lot for the baby. I'm at his house.'' And she also explained that her split from the 28-year-old rapper helped her embrace her inner feminist. She said: ''Going through a divorce, I really saw the double standards. Wiz would be with a different girl every day and get photographed out with girls at the club. I would be on one date with a guy, and it was like, 'You're a horrible mother! You're a f***ed up person! You're a w***e! That's why Wiz left you, you f***ing slut.' And I was just like, damn, am I not allowed to live? Am I not allowed to be sexy anymore because I'm a mom? ''I feel like I found my voice. I was constantly defending myself, like, 'No, I didn't sleep with that guy. No, I'm not a w***e. Don't look at me like that.' And one day, I woke up and I was like, ''Maybe I am -- and that's cool.' I'm single. I'm a mom. Yes, I'm going to date. I'm going to live my life and do whatever I want.''

Tougher laws to deal with infrastructure vandals now in effect The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development says the implementation of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act of 2015 will come into effect as from Wednesday. The act was signed into law by President Jacob Zuma in December last year. The law provides for stricter measures relating to bail and sentencing in respect of essential infrastructure- related offences. In terms of the new act‚ only the courts will deal with bail applications for essential infrastructure-related crimes. It removes the discretion of police officials and prosecutors to grant bail to suspects charged with essential infrastructure-related offences. The act further provides for the possibility of up to 30 years imprisonment or a fine not exceeding R100-million in the case of a corporate body. It is envisaged that the act will boost investor confidence in the country. “The public sector and the private business cannot operate fully without communication capabilities if Telkom cables are stolen. This situation necessitates drastic legislative intervention‚” Justice Minister Michael Masutha said on Wednesday. He said that‚ as of October 2015‚ the South African economy lost to a tune of about R5.7-billion per year as result of theft and vandalism of the essential infrastructure. The announcement comes a few days after Telkom announced it was ramping up efforts to migrate customers to wireless and fibre technologies to tackle copper cable theft syndicates. Telkom said cable theft cost the company over R200-million in the 2015 financial year - R100 million in direct cable theft repair cost and an additional R107-million which was spent on security services.

The banning of newspaper headlines is not censorship, says the SABC Speaking to TMG Entertainment on Thursday, SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed the broadcaster has banned the reading of newspaper headlines on all programs across its TV and radio platforms with immediate effect. "This is a business decision that was made this week. It is not a policy but simply a decision that we have made as an institution," Kaizer said. He added that the decision came from the realisation that the reading of newspaper headlines was providing free advertising for the publications that the headlines were being read from. "The SABC makes 80 percent of its revenue from advertising and so by us reading newspaper's content we are just giving them free publicity. They do not pay us for that exposure and we are not required to prove it," Kaizer said. The move has caused a stir on social media with fans accusing the public broadcaster of censorship, especially in light of a recent decision by the broadcaster to not air violent service delivery protests. Kganyago said that the two are not related. "This decision is not a form of censorship in anyway. How can it be? We are not obligated to read newspaper headlines on our show. If people want to read headlines they can see it on billboards. We have an obligation to provide news content to our audiences but that can be done through our own internal news organisation that gathers and provides news to our platforms, We refuse to give people free advertising," he added.

PSL top scorer Collins Mbesuma's signature is now up for grabs The Zambian international netted 14 times last season to end as the league’s leading marksman‚ even if he did himself express his displeasure at what he deemed a low total. His contract at Black Aces has expired and he will not be moving to Cape Town with the new franchise acquired by former Ajax shareholder John Comitis‚ Mbesuma’s agent Mike Makaab has confirmed to Times Media Digital. Makaab would not be drawn on any contact made with clubs yet‚ but the next few weeks could turn into a bun fight for his signature. Mbesuma has already played for all of the so-called ‘Big Three’‚ excelling at Kaizer Chiefs before less successful spells with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Aside from Black Aces‚ he has also turned out for Moroka Swallows and Lamontville Golden Arrows in the PSL. What will be significant for potential suitors is not just the number of goals Mbesuma scored last season‚ but also the number of games he played. The 32-year-old had battled with injury and weight gain for much of the previous decade‚ but lost seven kilograms and was noticeably nimbler in the last campaign. He started 29 of Black Aces’ 30 league games‚ and also featured in all but one of their cup matches‚ to put to bed any lingering fitness doubts. Mbesuma has also recently returned to the Zambia national squad and scored in the surprise 3-2 loss to Guinea- on Saturday.

'It's groundbreaking!'- DJ Sbu ecstatic with radio return It was announced on Thursday that the popular radio and TV personality will be hosting a morning show called DJ Sbu Breakfast that will be broadcast to both Vuma FM in KwaZulu-Natal and Rise FM in Mpumalanga. In addition, the show will be broadcast live on 1KZN TV in KwaZulu-Natal and nationally on TV. Sbu has worked at some of the biggest radio stations in the country, including Metro FM, Ukhozi FM and YFM, and will be on air for at least the next 12 months. He will be based in Johannesburg but will travel across the country to interact with his fans. Talking to TMG Entertainment on Wednesday, DJ Sbu revealed that his breakfast team will include talent he has worked with before and a couple of new faces, like Wits SRC president Nompumelelo Mkatshwa. "She is going to be part of our team. She has never done radio before but she will be learning. I see her, in a few months time, co-anchoring on the show or content production. She has a lot to offer and, most importantly, she represents a generation that has something to say," Sbu told us. Reflecting on his new venture, Sbu says that it is the first step towards one day owning his own major media company. "It's a historic venture that we are launching. I believe that in the era we live in, broadcasting has to have more elements than just you being on radio. It has to transcend one medium. That's what I have always wanted to do and that's what I am finally able to achieve with this partnership," he said. As a businessman with several existing companies and initiatives, DJ Sbu says that he is in a unique position to pull resources from his various projects, including his 2020 leadership enterprise and, soon, his record label. "Anything that I get involved in, I try to pull skills from. If I see a skill I need I can pull from my MoFaya team or I can pull from my 2020 team," he says.

The musician who sings gay love songs in isiXhosa But thanks to self-reliance and tenacity, he has produced his first album, Boet/Sissy, and performed with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo and Lebogang Mashile. Majola, whose off-stage name is Khanyisa Buti, spoke to GroundUp about the battle to get where he is now. Back in 2008, as a 22-year- old, Majola faced his darkest moments. Living in the south of Johannesburg, where his aunt took care of him, he would walk for four hours a day auditioning for any role in the South African arts scene. "I came back with rejection after rejection. I don't blame my aunt for sometimes getting tired of supporting me because I was a grown man already. It was such a painful time and I would get home, take a bath and listen to Sibongile Khumalo's Khumbula on repeat. " It was during this time that Majola lost the R20 000 he had saved up to record his first album. It was to take four more years for him to step inside a production studio to start recording his first track. "It took me about two years to record Boet/Sissy. I had sessions from 2012 until early 2014. I would stop and start because I had to save in between. " With the album costing about R60 000 to produce, Majola says the debts stacked up. Now he's hoping that through album sales and concerts, he'll be able to pay back the money he owes. Boet/Sissy is about self-acceptance in a time where "backward laws of sodomy" still exist. According to Majola, the album places the listener in a court house where the singer delivers a statement before receiving judgment. The album features Constitutional Court Judge Edwin Cameron, whose voice can be heard during several interludes. The singer revealed that Judge Edwin has become a friend and mentor to him. Describing himself as a biographical songwriter, Majola explains that all the material on his début album emerged from his experiences, thoughts and emotions. "I wouldn't have produced Boet/Sissy had I not survived homophobia. " He says he has faced all kinds of criticism and hatred. "I believe we all come from households with rules established out of love for something and hate for something. Those conditions of love and hate are because of a larger dictate from an oppressive system. So, it doesn't matter if the prejudice I experience is cultural, religious or economic. My duty is to teach myself the real meaning of love and not to echo the sentiments of bigots [and that's how] I am able to survive through the hate. " So far, the most surreal experience of his career was performing live with Sibongile Khumalo at #Ezezwe (Our Nations) which, he says, is a platform for black women and black queer men to come together to highlight issues affecting South Africa through academic dialogues, poetry and music. He has also worked with actress, performance poet and writer Lebogang Mashile on a single, which is now available on iTunes. "These are some of the people who embraced me as a person long before we collaborated. So, it’s not about the name but the person and who they are when they are not in the spotlight. " In addition to the egos, he claims that the local music industry is quite a hard place to operate in, pointing out that there's an unwillingness to help new artists out "A lot of artists go through creative exploitation. I have found that this has made people working in the industry very cagey and cynical about each other although they are collectively victimised by the same beast. " In light of the current wave of promoting local content in the country, Majola revealed that he has welcomed SABC's 90% local quota policy, which he feels makes cultural sense. But his criticism of the Department of Arts and Culture over support for independent artists echoes complaints commonly heard in the arts world. "Government's intervention comes through grants and funding. Once you receive these grants to create that work, you are faced with yet another dead-end - lack of audience. I believe that even the government prepares for major losses that are caused by the lack of active participation from citizens who are meant to consume what was funded. " In all, Majola says "it takes a lot of self belief and tenacity" to push through the pain the music world inflicts on artists. He's resorted to doing all the marketing, producing and distribution of his album himself to cut down costs. "When I fail, I lock the door at my place and cry out of disappointment, and hope that the following day I will still be able to recognise that voice that has always whispered: ‘Keep going. You are almost home’. " The story was first published on GroundUp.

'I'm not the killer‚' says hunter (warning: graphic images) Mass outrage is being vented on social media after images depicting an unidentified hunter‚ holding a rifle‚ standing over a slain hippo were posted to Facebook. The photographs‚ which also depict the hippo being skinned‚ were leaked by a whistle-blower after being lifted off the Facebook page of an employee at the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Limpopo hunter Theo de Marillac‚ who operates Theo de Marillac Safaris‚ was then named as the shooter – a claim that his lawyer Marco Martini vehemently denied on Thursday. “I want to tell you that false allegations have been made against my client. He was nowhere near Zambia at the time and that is not him in those pictures is‚” said Martini. According to the De Marillac Safaris’ website‚ the company offers hippo- hunting packages where participants receive “the rare and exciting opportunity of participating in a controlled hippo hunt in Zambia’s upper and lower Lupandi.” At a cost of R181‚300‚ hunters receive a “seven day safari including seven hippos”‚ according to the web page. The deal includes a professional hunter‚ “ground transportation from Mfui to camp‚ accommodation‚ meals‚ beer and soft drinks‚ a hunting vehicle‚ recovery staff‚ skinners and camp staff”. Photos of a hippo being shot and skinned have garnered mass outrage on social media. Image: Born Free/ Handout De Marillac Safaris also offers hunters a 10-day “Leopard with Hounds Safari” for $32‚500 (approximately R482‚224). Trophy fees for are at $6‚250 (approximately R92‚954). De Marillac‚ a former pupil of St Stithians College in Johannesburg‚ was in no way involved in the controversial cull in Zambia‚ said Martini. Leading wildlife organisation‚ Born Free International‚ has condemned the move to cull 2‚000 hippos over the next five years‚ despite it being sanctioned by the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). The DNPW had not responded to questions emailed from TMG Digital. Commenting on an article posted to the Born Free Foundation’s Facebook page about the cull‚ readers appeared to be utterly unimpressed: “They kill these wonderful creatures because they can. A disgusting show of power and wealth by people with a great deal of money and no intelligence‚” commented Elizabeth Tull. “The human race thinks that this planet and all that's on it or in it is theirs to do what they want with. Narrow minded‚ arrogant and ignorant. Oh and those with the most money obviously get first shot (literally) at whatever is up for grabs‚” John Durham added. While Linda Rutledge commented; “There are no excuses just senseless killings from greedy people. When is this all going to stop? These creatures are so very precious!” Will Taves OBE‚ Born Free President and Co-Founder‚ said in a statement that there were many questions about the “abhorrent activity” that needed answering. The graphic images of skiinned hippos have caused mass outrage on social media. Image: Born Free/ Handout “At a time when wildlife populations of multiple species are under extreme pressure across much of Africa‚ many‚ including Born Free and our supporters around the world‚ fundamentally question the logic of killing thousands of hippo‚ and turning the flood plains of the Luangwa River Valley into ‘killing fields’‚” he said. “I am sure the hippo cull‚ along with Zambia’s decision to re-instate trophy hunting of lions‚ will cause many to question whether Zambia is the right wildlife safari destination for them. I urge the authorities to call a halt to the killing with immediate effect‚” he added. Hippopotamuses are classified as a vulnerable and decreasing species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened species. 2016-06-09 18:06 Deneesha Pillay www.timeslive.co.za

Mashaba takes ‘Job back into Joburg’ march to mayor’s office A day after vowing to “put the ‘Job’ back into Joburg”‚ and trashing the incumbent’s tenure‚ the Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate will lead “a march for jobs to Executive Mayor‚ Parks Tau’s office”. This‚ the party said‚ will be to show that “the DA stands with the 869 000 unemployed residents of this city‚ and the march will highlight Mayor Tau’s failure to create jobs and deliver on his promises”. On Tuesday‚ Mashaba unveiled the opposition party’s new jobs posters. “Unemployment is a scar on Tau’s record and his silence on the jobs crisis is unacceptable‚” he said. “For far too long he has promised to create opportunities and jobs for the people of Johannesburg. His latest‚ self-serving catch phrase of a ‘new economic democracy’ is nothing but a fallacy. I ask you here today‚ economic democracy for who? “Mayor Tau puts his cronies first and you last. As a result jobs are not being created and service delivery remains a distant dream for too many residents of this city.” Mashaba‚ who amassed his fortune with the Black Like Me grooming products‚ said he would use his credentials “as an entrepreneur” and his knowledge of what “it takes to run a successful business…to grow the city economy and create jobs”. “By assisting entrepreneurs to start businesses‚ helping job seekers to find work‚ cutting corruption and wasteful expenditure‚ and improving service delivery‚ I will create thousands of jobs to restore the hope of those who have been left behind‚” he said. “We cannot allow the economic decay of Johannesburg at the hands of ANC mismanagement to continue.” - TMG Digital

Where Ali stung like a bee, we wilt like a lily Not that past generations, like mine, couldn't have used some of the Ali attitude. My only, pathetic, excuse is that we were prisoners of state capture. We valued our first-team places above principle. The only white person with any influence I recall to register a protest, albeit mildly but often witheringly, was Tommy Bedford. The Broeders in government and sport, however, could easily ignore him as an Engelsman. And even Bedford toed the line while he was Springbok captain in 1969. There was token dissent, such as the black armbands at the Comrades and a walk- off for 10 minutes at the Newlands cricket ground during a festival match, but nothing in the Muhammad Ali league of "I ain't got nothing against them Vietcong" when he refused to be dragooned into fighting one of America's wars. But with Ali's demise on Saturday, we are talking the here and now, and at a time when sportsmen (and a few sportswomen) wield more clout than before. Sports stars are more visible today and their influence, especially with the youth, is greater. But the establishment is still strong, the old fears still real - and no Ali in sight. The closest we have come in recent times is in Kumar Sangakkara's Spirit of Cricket lecture at Lord's in 2011 when he excoriated the administration of the game in Sri Lanka, a risky step in his homeland, where the administrators can be vindictive. So let's declare open season on our current sports stars. Compared to Ali, they are a bunch of pusillanimous pipsqueaks hiding behind anonymous petitions when they feel offended. Their post-match comments are as bland as the dullards who script them, the words like cold porridge in a curry restaurant. It's hard to imagine Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo coming out with potent statements against Fifa corruption, or black rugby players (let alone white ones) standing up against selection discrimination. Transformation could be achieved a lot quicker in our cricket and rugby if there were an Ali to strip the pious official statements of their bovine feculence. Ali might have lived in an era when differences were stark. Just because our challenges are more nuanced, it doesn't mean we shouldn't show a bit of Ali courage to stand up to them. Footballers in South Africa today, for example, are quite indifferent to the biggest verneukery since Hansie Cronje. The match-fixing here in 2010 has been well and truly buried by the SA Football Association and the minister of sport, who didn't just wash their hands of it, they scrubbed them for months - and are still scrubbing. As for the bribes that were paid to Fifa crooks, there has been hardly a peep out of authority. But there has been a hasty scrapping of visits to countries where the US, which is investigating the racket, has extradition agreements. For any sports star today to speak out, the risks are said to be too great. Money could be stopped (not something that would have concerned Bedford), sponsorships cancelled, team places lost. Worst of all, they might never again be invited to play golf with Johann Rupert.

Give 'em back some of the land, says Terrence Howard on economic inequality during SA trip During a press conference held on Monday at MultiChoice City in Randburg, the duo spoke about how important it is for the show to address topics that are taboo in black culture, like depression. Both Howard and Henson have become beacons in the Black Lives Matter movement across the globe. Speaking to TMG Entertainment during a one-on-one interview at the swanky 54 on Bath hotel in Rosebank, Howard discussed the topic of economic inequality in South Africa. “When you think about it, not even discussing what is taking place just inside America , but if you look at what is taking place over here, after 25 years of democracy, the Native Land Act of 1913 - there’s been nothing given back to the people as a result of that.” He went on to add that the issue needs to be addressed. “Couldn’t they give back one or two percent? Say we’re giving back one percent into education or two percent into medicals. But nothing has been given back to the people and the land that was taken from them. And so you have everybody matters. Everybody matters Give ‘em back some of the land. Give ‘em back some of the money.” The actress meanwhile emphasised the importance of having conversations about race, no matter how awkward. “Without a conversation there is no solution. I feel like the truth will set us all free. You can’t keep hiding and pretending things didn’t happen in our past.” The stars, who are friends outside of the workplace, admitted that there are times that they get onto each other’s nerves, but didn’t hesitate to explain what a privilege it is to work with one another. “How many people get to work with their best friend and somebody that they admire and always challenge,” said Howard of Henson. Henson added that Howard has the ability to push her on a daily basis. “I feel like Terrence gives me the best of himself. He challenges me. I like to be challenged. I don’t like easy work. He does that. Every day.” They’re expected to visit Soweto today and host a VIP party on Thursday night in Johannesburg before leaving the country.

Silicone tape could knock Hot Spot system for a six Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have spent six months testing cricket's decision review system and it is understood they told the International Cricket Council's cricket committee last week at Lord's that silicone tape can prevent edges showing on Hot Spot, the thermal imaging technology. The ICC now has to decide whether to ban silicone tape at international level or accept that the Hot Spot system is not perfect. The scientists from MIT have also found that Hawk-Eye, the ball-tracking technology, can have a field of error of up to almost 4cm when determining the projected height of balls. The results confirm long-held suspicions that silicone tape can fool Hot Spot. The issue first flared up during the 2013 Ashes when Hot Spot failed to show edges that were picked up by the snickometer audio measuring tool. Kevin Pietersen successfully sued Australia's Channel 9 for suggesting batsmen were using tape deliberately to fool Hot Spot. Since the 2013 Ashes Brennan has developed a Real Time Snicko audio technology, which provides evidence that complements Hot Spot. This is now used by the third umpire and batsmen can be given out if Real Time Snicko detects an edge even if Hot Spot fails to show up the ball hitting bat. Players sometimes have several layers of tape on their bat to repair minor damage and to level out indentations on the edge. The findings will be discussed at the ICC's annual meeting in Edinburgh later this month. - ©The Daily Telegraph

Reyes repays Baldwin’s confidence, shows why he belongs to Gilas Many questioned Ryan Reyes’ inclusion in the national team pool. Some wondered how long will it take before he gets cut. But there’s a reason why Reyes was considered. In fact, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin can attest to it. And on Wednesday night, in a nationally televised game against an Asian rival in Iran, he showed everyone he belonged. Reyes, the veteran TNT guard, silenced his critics with a resounding performance, scoring all of his 12 points from the three- point area to help the beat Iran in a tuneup game at Smart Araneta Coliseum. READ: ‘A gauge of where you are': Ravena relishes experience with Gilas One could make a case that his showing may have sealed his spot in the final 14-man lineup, but the way Baldwin sounded in the post-game press conference, it was as if Reyes’ was already a cinch for a slot. “Ryan is just a guy I really like a lot,” Baldwin admitted after Gilas’ 81-70 win over Iran in a tuneup. “I think he understands my confidence in him. He plays very comfortably with me. That was no mistake, no fluke that he started. I’m very confident in Ryan,” added Baldwin, who fielded Reyes in the starting lineup. READ: Lassiter cut, Gilas’ 14-man lineup set Reyes’ value is usually seen on the defensive end of the floor, but he proved he’s a two-way player by making 4-of-5 from long range. “It just felt good today, so I just kept shooting,” Reyes said. “These guys were giving me the ball and I was open, so I just threw it up there.” Reyes’ steady outside touch couldn’t have come at a better time with Gilas missing two of its best three-point shooters in and Marcio Lassiter due to health issues. “Hopefully they come back,” said Reyes. “I’m praying for quick healing for those guys. But like coach said, this is a free-willing offense.” “He lets everyone take the shot if they’re open. If it’s a good shot, you might not get another good look like that, especially against guys that are tall and long and fast.” But as part of a star-studded team, Reyes understands what his role is and where he’s best known for. “I’m going to continue to play the defense that I play,” said Reyes, a four- time PBA All-Defensive team member. “There’s a lot of adjustment. These guys are a lot quicker, bigger, and you just got to be aware at all times.” The 6-foot-2 Reyes made the 14-man lineup, announced by Gilas Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio early Thursday morning, just hours after the tuneup. “I think he’s one of the best players you that can have out on the floor in any situation,” Baldwin said. “He’s intelligent, he’s defensively tough, he’s physically very tough and when he’s hitting shots, then you have the best of both worlds with him.”

President Aquino vows to remain a ‘friend and ally’ of peace MANILA— President Aquino pledged, on Thursday , his continued support for the Mindanao peace process, even as a private citizen. Mr. Aquino, who made the peace in Mindanao a cornerstone of his six-year administration, made this promise at the launch of “Junctures,” a compilation of selected speeches and statements made throughout the peace process between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). “ In 21 days , I will be stepping down from office, but to all of you in attendance today, and to each person of goodwill who wishes to fulfill the promise of Mindanao, I will remain your friend and ally. Tell me how I can help this process, even as an ordinary citizen, and I will be by your side,” the President said at the event held at Malacañang. The President also expressed hope that the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), which the 15th Congress shelved, would be passed by the next Congress. “The book we launch today tells of the journey we have taken these past six years. We launch it fully aware that the journey is still ongoing—that there are more challenges we must overcome, and triumphs that await all of us. It instills in us the awareness that we are, once more, at a juncture, where we must choose between reverting to the status quo of the past, or continuing our progress far into the future,” Mr. Aquino said. “At the same time, I am also hopeful that it will remind us of the successes we have enjoyed so far—that it may stand as an enduring symbol of our restored faith in one another—not as opponents in a negotiating table, but as fellowmen who share a home. I truly believe that our combined efforts can bring about a Mindanao—and a Philippines—that is free from conflict, one that we can be proud to bequeath to future generations,” he added. In a statement, MILF chieftain, Al Haj Murad Ebrahim said the book stood for a “common pursuit” of the Philippine government and the MILF “to educate and spread the word of peace in the context of the Bangsamoro.” Murad was unable to attend the book launch as he was still recovering from an eye surgery. MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal read Murad’s statement and extended the MILF head’s apology to President Aquino and the audience for his absence. Murad emphasized the power of words in his statement, giving as an example President Aquino’s “affirmation and acceptance of the Bangsamoro” in his speech at the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) in 2012. “Words, indeed, are the most powerful weapon. They can ignite a fire within the minds of those who hear them. They can move people to action. They can dictate the trajectory of events that follow. Words can fool or rule,” Murad said. SFM

Global stocks slide amid concerns about world economy Global stocks fell on Thursday as investors worried about the health of the global economy given the Federal Reserve’s cautious stance about raising its interest rates. Financial markets were closed for holidays in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Keeping score: In Europe, Britain’s FTSE 100 slid 0.9 percent at 6,248 and Germany’s DAX fell 1.2 percent to 10,091. France’s CAC 40 lost 0.9 percent to 4,410. US futures indicated a bleak opening on Wall Street, with the Dow futures down 0.2 percent and S&P futures down 0.3 percent. ANALYST VIEWPOINT: “The Fed being more cautious about tightening rates should negatively impact stocks, since they are worried about the state of the economy and its ability to withstand higher interest rates,” said IG Market Strategist Bernard Aw. “Make no mistake, the cautious undertone pervades the financial markets.” ECB warning: The president of the European Central Bank warned in a speech Thursday that the eurozone economy needs governments to make more reforms if it is to see higher growth. Mario Draghi noted the central bank could not heal the economy on its own and that reforms are needed in a region where aging demographics risks weighing on long-term growth. Japan machinery orders: Earlier, in Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 shed 1 percent to 16,668.41 after the government reported that core domestic private machinery orders, excluding volatile orders for ships and electric utilities, fell 11 percent in April from the month before, suggesting prolonged weakness in capital investment. Foreign machinery orders also fell, 6.9 percent month-on-month in April. South Korea’s economy: Bank of Korea surprised investors by slashing its key interest rate to a record low 1.25 percent for the month of June. The move is the first rate cut in Asia’s fourth-largest economy in a year. Most market analysts had expected the bank to lower interest rates later in the year, anticipating slower growth in the second half. Low oil prices have hit South Korea shipyards and other major exporters. Asia’s day: Australia’s S&P ASX 200 slipped 0.2 percent at 5,361.90. South Korea’s KOSPI was 0.1 percent lower at 2,024.17. 36 36 ‘Repentant’ pa admits raping daughter, surrenders to cops after 7 years MANILA — A “repentant” 39- year-old father who was accused, in 2009, of raping his then 10-year-old daughter, surrendered to cops in Bagumbong, Caloocan City, on Tuesday and then owned up to the crime. The Caloocan City Police arrested Manuel Sia on Wednesday based on a warrant of arrest issued on Tuesday by presiding Judge Raymundo Vallega of Branch 130 of the Caloocan City Regional Trial Court. SPO2 Eduardo Muscarre of Caloocan City Police’s warrant section said Sia was captured at his house at NorthVille in Bagumbong, Caloocan City after he sought advice at the barangay hall. Sia, interviewed by the Philippine Daily Inquirer in his detention cell, said he turned himself in to the police after realizing that he must pay for the crime of raping his now 17-year-old daughter. Sia admitted raping his daughter who was under his custody after he separated from his wife. After the crime, the victim’s mother brought the victim back to Bicol together with her brother. “I am not afraid of (President-elect Rodrigo) Duterte. I just want to pay for my sins,” Sia said. He added that he committed the crime because he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and was angry at being deceived by his former wife. Although the victim has forgiven her father, the case against Sia will continue. President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has said that once he assumes power, he will instruct policemen to be tough on criminal suspects, especially those tagged in drug trafficking and drug pushing, and not to hesitate to kill those who will resist arrest. Duterte has also offered a range of bounties up to P5 million for the capture of drug lords, drug traffickers and drug pushers. He also wants Congress to pass a law restoring death penalty for heinous crimes including drug trafficking. SFM 2016-06-09 18:06 Jodee A newsinfo.inquirer.net

Belo bounces back from poor first game, drops 25 The real Mac Belo finally showed up on Thursday. After a paltry four-point, three-rebound showing two days back, the 2016 Aspirants’ Cup MVP proved why he is one of the best amateur players today, lighting up in Phoenix’s 108- 78 victory over Topstar ZC Mindanao. Belo finished with 25 points along with three rebounds and three assists as the Accelerators took the top spot early in the conference. “Binigyan lang ako ng kumpyansa nila coach, especially si coach Richie (Ticzon),” said Belo, as Ticzon called the shots for the ailing Eric Gonzales. “Sabi lang nila, tumira lang ng tumira para makuha ko yung rhythm ko.” Having a loaded line-up has worked wonders for Phoenix with Ed Daquioag and Mike Tolomia taking the cudgels in Belo’s off-game. The 23-year-old forward finally found his mark and helped the Accelerators battled back from an early 11-0 deficit against a pesky Aguilas crew. “Kanina, slow start kami. Buti naman nakabawi kami, especially nung second quarter na nakuha namin yung momentum at nag-focus kami sa defense kaya naka-run at nakabalik kami sa game,” the Gilas cadet said. With Phoenix tagged as one of the favorites this 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup, Belo knows it comes with added pressure as as every team will be out to deny the Accelerators. “Nandoon yung tingin ng bawat team na kami nga yung team-to-beat kaya dapat ganun din ang turing namin. Kailangan talagang mag-focus kami every game,” he said. Belo has been working overtime to keep up in practice with three different teams — from Far Eastern University, Gilas Pilipinas to Phoenix—but fatigue is far from his concerns. “OK lang sa akin kasi masarap naman mag- eh. Mas inisip ko yung kapakanan ng team.”

Actress Alma Concepcion issues account of Pasay concert deaths Actress Alma Concepcion on Thursday went to the National Bureau of Investigation’s Death Investigation Division (NBI- DID) to give her statement on last month’s Closeup Forever Summer Concert in Pasay City where five people collapsed and died. The incident has shed light on the new form of drugs using synthetic materials that killed the victims. Concepcion said she issued a sworn statement and gave her narration of the incident. Earlier, Concepcion posted a lengthy status on her Facebook account narrating what she witnessed at the concert. “I saw the teenagers dancing, wearing shades, masks, chewing gums they came in prepared with all the props. Masks, inhalers, lights, shades, bandanna to cover face. They don’t look like first timers in taking ecstacy,” she said in her post. “They danced for more than an hour, none of them holding any liquid. Obviously they weren’t on just alcohol as their eyes were rolling, teeth grinding, and they were dancing non-stop for the whole hour (or more than). No liquids,” she added. Concepcion said she also saw a girl collapsing and the latter’s boyfriend trying to carry her. The girl that collapsed turned out to be one of the five fatalities later identified as Bianca Fontejon. READ: 5 dead at Pasay City concert The other fatalities are Ariel Leal, Lance Garcia, Eric Anthony Miller and Ken Migawa The NBI last week said one of the five victims tested positive for lethal synthetic drugs. READ: PNP, NBI findings jibe: Drugs killed Pasay partygoers NBI Forensic Division chief of staff Rommel Papa said they found traces of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) methylene homolog and methylenedioxycathinone commonly known as “bath salts” in one of the two victims that they have autopsied. Papa explained that the methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) methylene homolog and methylenedioxy cathinone are new kinds of drugs that the NBI’s Anti-Illegal Drugs Division said are dangerous and not fit for human consumption but not illegal. He said these are classified as “psychoactive,” “mind-altering” and “hallucinogenic” drugs. Both drugs, he added, are not yet included on the list of prohibited drugs under Republic Act 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. RAM/rga

German prosecutors investigating missing data in VW scandal BERLIN — German prosecutors are investigating an employee at Volkswagen who allegedly asked his coworkers to delete or hide data in connection with the company’s emission scandal. Braunschweig prosecutor Klaus Ziehe said Thursday the suspect, whose name was not released, had in an “indirect but clear enough way” made the request just before Volkswagen acknowledged using special software to rig U. S. emissions tests last year. Ziehe said several employees moved files to flash drives, some of which have been recovered. Ziehe said that “so far we do not think this was a huge data loss which would massively harm or delay the investigations in the emissions process.” Volkswagen did not immediately return calls to comment. 41 Info on shabu lab in Bilibid ‘inconclusive’ – DOJ chief While the government has information about an existing shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) laboratory inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), acting Justice Secretary Emmanuel Caparas said such an information remains inconclusive. “The intel that we get or at least the information we get coming out of BuCor (Bureau of Corrections) has touched on that [referring to the shabu laboratory],” Caparas said at a press conference Thursday. He said continuing operations were launched by government authorities but the search has yielded nothing. “There are continuing operations on that but essentially the information coming back to us is very inconclusive,” Caparas said. He explained that their information is only about the existence of the shabu laboratory but not the actual location. “It could be here, it could be there. NBP is a very big area,” Caparas explained. The NBP is one of the seven prison facilities maintained by the Bureau of Corrections. Its land area is over 500 hectares. /rga RELATED STORIES NBI, BuCor: No sign of drug lab in NBP Bilibid inspection yields illegal drugs, gadgets, bath tub

NBP source of 75% of drug deals in PH— Aguirre The New Bilibid Prison (NBP) is the source of 75 percent of drug transactions in the country, incoming Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said on Thursday. Aguirre said NBP has become a drug haven despite the series of raids known as “Oplan Galugad” being conducted by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor). NBP is one of the seven facilities under the BuCor. “Tama yun (referring to the 75 percent of drug transactions disclosed by incoming Philippine National Police Chief Ronald Dela Rosa) (That’s right). Ang ibang ilegal na droga ay galing pa sa (Some of the illegal drugs were from) mainland China,” Aguirre said. Aguirre met with acting Justice Secretary Emmanuel Caparas. Caparas said Aguirre was keen on focusing on drug- related cases, graft and corruption and certain agencies including the BuCor, which supervises, among others, the NBP. Drug lords and other high-risk inmates inside the NBP are now housed at Building 14, a heavily guarded facility inside the NBP’s maximum security compound. They have been separated from the other inmates to prevent them from continuing with their illegal activities. The incoming Department of Justice (DOJ) chief said the information they have received showed that drug operations outside are being controlled by the drug lords in prison. Aguirre said Oplan Galugad, or the regular raid inside the prison facility, will be stopped because prison authorities continue to recover illegal drugs and contrabands. Authorities have conducted over 30 “Oplan Galugad.” Aguirre earlier said that in lieu of Oplan Galugad, he will employ a “shock and awe” tactic to paralyze the criminal operations inside the prison facility. 44 Philippine eagle rescued in Aurora CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) rescued by a farmer in a forest in Aurora’s San Luis town last week was placed under the custody of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) in Quezon City, an official said on Thursday (June 9). Farmer Eugene Nace found the young eagle trapped in a snare that was used in catching monkey inside the Aurora Memorial National Park on June 1, said Francisco Milla Jr., DENR Central Luzon director. The bird’s existence confirmed the presence of this critically endangered species in the Sierra Madre mountain range, Fred Sadueste, regional chief of the DENR wildlife enforcement division, said. Mindanao is known to host Philippine eagles. Milla said the raptor had to be turned over last June 2 to the BMB for rehabilitation. It will stay at the BMB until it is healthy to be returned to the forests, according to Milla. “[The BMB] has the facilities required to care for the eagle properly,” he said. In April, the National Bureau of Investigation seized seven Palawan pangolins and cobras from a Chinese woman transporting the wildlife via the Clark Freeport north of this Pampanga capital. These and the Aurora eagle brought to 58 the animals and birds rescued and confiscated by the DENR in Central Luzon since 2011. SFM/rga

Kiko Matos willing to be Baron Geisler’s onscreen lover MMA fans, street fight enthusiasts and just curious and excited fans altogether are raving for the much- awaited rematch of actor Baron Geisler and independent film actor Kiko Matos inside the MMA cage on June 25. But once the two actors settle their squabble, is it possible they can work together and even become lovers onscreen? Matos, despite figuring in bar brawl with Geisler, has openly expressed to INQUIRER.net that he would welcome the possibility of working together with his June 25 URCC fight opponent. Being an actor himself, Matos regards the work of Geisler highly and acknowledges his capacity to deliver impressive performance. He said that if given the chance to work together, he would never engage in a fight with Geisler during the course of the project but that, once done, they could figure again in another clash if circumstances lead to it. “[While working with Baron] of course, I’ll back down [from any fight]. I won’t get into a fight while working with him because it’s work eh. Just set aside our differences and the main purpose is to finish the project, and then we can fight after the project. I would love to work with him, he’s a very good actor, I’d like to learn from him also. He’s a senior. Nauna siya sakin,” Matos said in an interview Friday last week. Dream ‘loveteams’ Since opportunities are pouring in on the way of charismatic Matos, it is inevitable that he be paired with a few personalities in show biz. If given the chance to work with a leading lady, the half-Portuguese hunk gives his top three choices. “I’ll definitely want to work with Anne Curtis, Jessy Mendiola and Glaiza de Castro,” he said. Being a versatile actor, he’s ready to take on any role including that of a gay. “Of course I will, I mean if you’re secure with your sexuality, there’s nothing to be worried about,” Matos said with confidence. What if he is paired with another guy in a love team? “I’d like to work with Coco Martin, Jake Cuenca, Epi Quizon and, oh, Baron Geisler,” he said with a laugh. From ‘fighters to lovers’ Since he expressed openness to working with Geisler, he is ready to do intimate scenes with the actor if the material is compelling enough. “If the script calls for it. I think that would be a good film. I think everybody would want to see that, from fighters turned lovers,” Matos said, laughing out loud.

Friends become foes as battle lines drawn between SA A and England Saxons On Friday night the pair will be on opposing sides when Armand gets a starting berth in the England Saxons side that takes on Carr’s South Africa A team at ’s Free State Stadium (kickoff at 7.10pm) What was perhaps the Harare-born Armand’s highlight of his career in the years he spent at Western Province between 2012 and 2013 came in the Stormers last match of the Australasian tour that year came by a stroke of luck. Allister Coetzee’s Stormers had lost Bok Duane Vermeulen and Nick Koster to injury‚ and an SOS call was made to Armand‚ who had been playing Varsity Cup rugby for UCT that year. While the former Maritzburg College and player may have been warmly embraced by Carr when the substitution was made in Perth‚ it is unlikely to be an occasion of hugs and smiles when the pair line up on opposite sides of the tunnel when the SA A and Saxons make their way onto the park. Both Johan Ackermann’s charges and Ali Hepher’s Saxons are keen to get the upper hand in the first clash of the two-match tour. Hepher’s intentions are very clear – a win is what they are gunning for. “We want to see a team that does not hold back‚” the Saxons coach said. “[One] that is fearless in the way it puts itself out there‚ but is also very accurate‚ playing smart rugby with or without the ball.” The Saxons coach has no less than seven England internationals in his starting XV‚ with one more on the bench. The most capped international‚ Dave Attwood‚ who has played 23 tests for England will captain an experienced side with a mammoth combined total of 60 international caps against Oupa Mohoje’s side that features four Boks. “We are really pleased with how the group is progressing together. We are developing the players‚ which is key to this tour‚ and we now want to see how they perform on the international stage‚” Hepher said. While the battle between the old teammates Carr and Armand will be a thrilling battle to watch‚ more rousing will be witnessing what young Sharks flyhalf Garth April will be able to do against the experienced Danny Capriani‚ who has played 14 tests‚ in the combat of pivots.

‘Time to walk the NDP talk’‚ says Phosa "We are all sitting in the shade of the same tree - South Africa - which will die a slow and painful death if we do not nurture it consistently‚ and together‚" said Phosa. "The lack of trust between the three key economic‚ social and political assemblages have developed over the past 10 years. These formations regularly and often publically take side swipes at each other without engaging positively in debate regarding the future of South Africa. " The former ANC treasurer general was delivering a key note address under the theme “The Implications of the NDP on the Regional Economies” at the Gauteng economic indaba at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Thursday. He said the forum had presented an opportunity of engagement between the various role players and would be delighted if this could be carried into the future. He stressed that cohesiveness of purpose was the only solution which would take economic transformation in the country forward with economic growth as the driver. Phosa said South Africa should "wake up and smell the coffee". "The sooner we recognise that the NDP is not a framework for development but a guideline for growth and equality‚ the sooner we will find consensus and energy to work together to meet its critical objectives. "I find it tragic that we talk NDP but do not walk it. It is now time to walk the NDP talk. " Phosa identified three major challenges among others; that are currently facing the "successful implementation" of the NDP. They include: - The poverty of capable‚ committed and visionary leadership that is focused on maintaining and strengthening strong anti-corruption measures and creating the framework for participative development. - A need for a capable state that is strict on governance‚ is responsible and is accountable to the electorate. - A lack of policy clarity and certainty that leads to investment - uncertainties often place South Africa at risk when major investment projects are considered. In addition to these challenges‚ Phosa said he often hears about lip service being paid to the NDP by some members of the leadership of the ruling party. He labelled this as a "contradiction [as] you cannot pledge allegiance to one by an oath of office and not support one another. "

NWU riot damage cost revised down to R85m, from R151 million The Department of Higher Education and Training had said that the estimated costs of damage during protests at the university totalled R151 million since October. In a written response to the National Assembly‚ Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande has detailed the cost of student protests to campus properties around South Africa‚ saying the total now stands at R459.8 million since October 2015. The department is in the process of investigating which universities will be lodging insurance claims to cover some of the damage costs‚ he said. But university spokesperson Willie du Plessis has now said that the R151 million was an early estimation‚ made before it was established that parts of the Mafikeng campus' main administration building‚ torched in protests in February‚ could be saved. The University of KwaZulu- Natal‚ University of Limpopo‚ Tshwane University of Technology and the University of the Western Cape have lodged claims with insurers estimated at a total of over R106 million. Insurers have to date paid out R28.2 million. Department spokesperson Khaye Nkwanyana said that government will have to cover the costs that remain after insurance pay outs. “Public institutions are funded by government. We have to address the damages‚ we can't leave it like that‚” he said. He added that while some institutions would be able to chip in to fix up campuses due to other streams of income like donations from wealthy alumni‚ previously disadvantaged universities will need more help from the government. So far the department has contributed an amount of R40.496 million towards damages at five historically disadvantaged universities - the University of Fort Hare‚ the University of Zululand‚ the University of the Western Cape‚ Walter Sisulu University and the University of Limpopo. Meanwhile staff at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University returned to work on Thursday after exams were suspended on Wednesday due to student protests in which a public road was damaged.

Olympian Anju Bobby George slams Kerala Sports Minister for insulting her Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Sports Minister E P Jayarajan today courted controversy again after Olympian and Arjuna awardee Anju Bobby George accused him of insulting her with "corruption" charges. Anju Bobby George. Pic/PTI Anju, President of Kerala Sports Council, has also complained to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the issue. The athlete, who made history after she won a medal in the World Championships in Athletics in 2003, said she had gone to meet the Sports Minister along with the Council Vice President on June 7 after the new government came to power. Anju was appointed as the Council President by the previous UDF government. "We thought he will ask us about the status of sports in Kerala. In the first meeting itself, the minister said 'you all are elected members by the previous ministry. So you all are other party members... All transfers and appointments you are doing are illegal'," Anju told PTI quoting the minister. The athlete said the minister also objected to the flight tickets availed by her from Bengaluru, where she is based, to Thiruvananthapuram for attending the Council meetings. She said the minister had told her 'This is all against rules. I can stop all this'. The veteran long jumper said she had given a representation to the previous government for permitting her to avail airfare and the same had been accepted. "The minister said 'this is all corruption'," Anju said. Anju said that besides her, Preeja Sreedharan, Indian Hockey captain P R Sreejesh and Kerala Cricket Association President, T C Mathew, are other members of the Council. "The minister said that all of us are involved in corruption. We are not acting for any political party. Sports is our party. I am not a member of Congress, Communist or BJP. "We are doing our duty. If the government is not ready to accept that, they can ask us to leave. But instead, calling all of us as corrupt was not acceptable," she said. Asked if she planned to quit her post, Anju said she had not taken a decision yet. "We are sportspersons. I have a duty to inform the Chief Minister about the minister's behaviour," she said. Jayarajan, however, denied the charge and said Anju had parted "very happily" after meeting him. Asked about her charge, the state Sports Minister said he had not behaved rudely. "No, never," he told reporters. He said he was not aware that the athlete had complained to the Chief Minister. The minister had kicked up a row after he described legendary boxing champion Mohammed Ali as a sportsman from Kerala during his obituary reference.

SA sends team to extinguish fire fighter dispute in Canada The government-funded organisation said that media reports about “salary increases” and hourly rates had “caused confusion” among the fire fighters who are abroad. Some of the fire fighters failed to report for duty on Wednesday. CBC News said the dispute was prompted by “news articles…claiming the workers are making between $15 and $21 an hour”‚ and quoted one of the fire fighters‚ Bitiro Moseki‚ as saying: “It’s $15 (R179.90) not even per hour‚ it’s $15 per day.” “We wish to categorically state that the quoted amount of $21 (R244) per hour is incorrect and was never agreed to with anyone‚” said Working on Fire spokesman Linton Rensburg on Thursday. He said it was agreed by all of those who were deployed to Canada that they would receive their normal stipend in line with the South African Government’s Expanded Works Programme‚ including provision for time worked over eight hours. A week ago‚ TMG Digital reported that‚ fearing they would be seen as “slave labour”‚ Canadian officials had jacked up the pay of the fire fighters. Rensburg said the fire fighters had agreed on a stipend of R174.90 a day paid by the Canadian government and would receive and additional R408 for every day spent abroad from the South African government upon their return. “We are dispatching a senior management team to Alberta‚ Canada‚ this evening to address the fire fighters’ concerns and to assist with the smooth demobilisation of our fire fighters and their safe return back home to South Africa‚” said Rensburg. 2016-06-09 16:29 S'duduzo www.timeslive.co.za

Smelly bins, pickets plague France on eve of Euro soccer kickoff One hardline union warned the walkouts could make it hard for fans to reach France's opening match against Romania on Friday, while protests in the north and west of the country briefly jammed some main roads. "Some people just don't give a damn that their country is about to host a big event which creates jobs and huge economic benefits," said Sports Minister Thierry Braillard. Finance Minister Michel Sapin said the labour disputes risked undermining signs of stronger growth and falling unemployment in the euro zone's second biggest economy. Although rail services improved on the ninth day of a rolling strike, there was still no signal from the hardline CGT and SUD unions that they would call off the industrial action. The unions are waging battle over work and rest time at the state-owned SNCF rail company, despite government concessions. They are also taking part in broader nationwide protests against reform of France's labour laws to make hiring and firing easier. President Francois Hollande says reform is key to tackling a jobless rate that has been stuck near 10 percent since he won power in 2012. Spain said economic growth was improving and that job creation in the first quarter of this year was better than any quarter since early 2008. "This is not the moment to throw a spanner into the works, with growth picking up," Sapin said. As millions of foreign visitors and soccer fans prepared for the month-long tournament, garbage piled up on the streets in parts of Paris and Marseille as restive garbage workers kept waste plants at a standstill. With just over 24 hours to the opening match of Euro 2016, a train driver representative of the SUD union warned travel to the 80,000-capacity stadium could be thrown into chaos on an urban commuter line known as the RER D. The line usually ferries tens of thousands of fans to the site from inner Paris. "The Euros are here and let me tell you this, it's going to be hard to take the RER D on Friday," said SUD representative Fabien Villedieu. "They'll find some non-strikers to man trains but it's going to be complicated to get there by train. " It was not clear that his union had enough power to cause a major disruption through a strike, or whether it planned to set up pickets or even occupy the rail tracks. Pilots at Air France, unsatisfied with the result of marathon pay negotiations, stuck to plans for a four-day strike that is due to start on Saturday.

A (not so scary) chat with The Conjuring 2 star Patrick Wilson Sitting across from us in a London hotel room, the acclaimed actor looks relaxed and at ease- a million miles away from the frantic character he often plays in horror films. He laughs and jokes easily as he speaks of reprising his role as Ed Warren, a renowned demonologist, in the sequel to the 2013 box office hit The Conjuring. As the conversation turns to the film, set to open in local cinemas on June 10, Patrick explains that returning to the series for a second time was exciting, and believes that there may be room for many more films in The Conjuring series. "Coming back to work with people you really love working with is always really enticing. With these kind of movies, you always have two stories you can tell simultaneously. You can continue with the relationship between Ed and Lorraine (actress Vera Farmiga) and the toll these cases have on their family, and you can also investigate a new case with each film. If we get it right, which we have once, then it’s really ripe for a number of films," he says. "I wasn’t scared of the genre. I think some of this stuff is much harder than a straight drama. " Having performed across several genres in his illustrious career, including roles in The Phantom of the Opera, Little Children and Space Station 76, Patrick says that he wasn’t scared to take on a role in the horror genre- even when it is often criticised for producing a poorer quality of acting. "I understand where the criticism is coming from. But the horror films that have transcended the genre have all been acclaimed for their acting. I wasn’t scared of the genre. I think some of this stuff is much harder than a straight drama. Some of the dialogue where you have to speak Latin while trying to bring out a ghost, you can’t go halfway with that sort of stuff," he says. He reveals that he prepared for the role by studying the life of Ed Warren through old footage, while trying to understand the situations and emotions Ed would find himself in. It may seem a difficult task but it did bring some sort of familiarity in that Ed was a family man like himself. "Being a parent affects all that you do" In 2006, Patrick and his wife Dagmara welcomed their first child. Their son was followed two years later by the birth of another baby boy in 2009. Patrick believes that his sons have changed the way he approaches acting, especially when it comes to acting alongside children on set. "Being a parent affects all that you do. And every job that you take is filtered through your family’s life. More especially, it’s changed the way I approach acting when there’s a scene where I have to be a parent. I think I understand it more and it comes across as more authentic than maybe it did when I was younger and didn’t have children," he says. So what’s the chances that Patrick would bring his work and his family to South Africa for a visit? Patrick has never been to South Africa but says that his cousin is marrying a South African later this year and he and his family might come down for a visit when the couple tie-the-knot. In the meantime, he’d better brush up on some of his knowledge of the place. "What do I know about South Africa? I know that there is no District 9. I know videos and films that have been shot there. And I know that there’s Great White Sharks jumping out of the ocean," he jokes. If (or when) he comes, we’ll have to give him a tour. Just watch out for the jumping Great Whites, Pat!

Durban SPCA closed due to protest threat Angry protesters - unhappy about the African National Congress' candidates for the August local government elections - blockaded roads with rubble and burning tyres on Monday. Since then‚ there have been ongoing rumours of further flare ups‚ but these have not developed. Police were deployed to various areas this week‚ anticipating more protests on Thursday and Friday. The Durban and Coast branch of the SPCA‚ situated in Inanda Road‚ was evacuated on Thursday. The intersection where the SPCA is based was one of the worst affected by Monday's protests. Clean-up teams are still tidying up the area. When TMG Digital visited the offices‚ vehicles and staff were seen leaving the premises. A sign posted on the gate read: "Due to threat of protests the SPCA will be closed from 12pm. " Two police vehicles monitor the intersection near the SPCA in Inanda Road, Durban. The SPCA closed its doors at midday on Thursday due to threats of protest action. SPCA general manager Caroline Smith said a manager had spoken to police officers stationed at the intersection‚ who had confirmed that there was a "95% chance" of more protests. "For the safety of our staff‚ we didn't want to take the risk‚" she said. Smith said contingency plans had been put in place to ensure that the animals on site were taken care of‚ and emergency staff would work from other locations if they were called upon. However‚ no crowds had gathered by midday - and a half-hour later there were no signs of protests. Two eThekwini municipality officers said that the police force was monitoring the situation and that‚ at midday‚ there was "nothing happening". One of the officers on scene said he did not expect protest action "but you can never be sure". He said officers were placed in strategic positions and ready for any eventuality. "If it does happen‚ we will drive them back very quickly‚" the officer said.

Copa America 2016: Peru survives Ecuador surge to earn 2-2 draw Phoenix: Peru struck twice early but Ecuador gathered themselves and rallied with two strikes of their own to force a 2-2 draw in the second Group B Copa America Centenario football match for both teams. Christian Cueva scored in the fifth minute and Edison Flores in the 13th, both assisted by Paolo Guerrero here on Wednesday. Guerrero was difficult to mark for Ecuador's defence in the first half. Cueva’s turn with the ball sent defender Gabriel Achilier to the ground and freed the Peru attacker to place the ball past Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez. Peru looked to be in control when Flores scored but Ecuador battled back. Antonio Valencia chipped to Enner Valencia, who chested the ball down and slid the into the net to cut the lead in half in the 39th minute. Ecuador’s momentum carried over into the second half. In the 48th minute, Jefferson Montero completed a combination of passes by tapping the ball back to Miler Bolanos, who finished from close range to lock the score at 2-2. Peru’s Raul Ruidaz had one last shot just before the final whistle but it went wide. Achilier was given a red card for his second yellow card offence. Peru held on for a draw and with four points are in second place in the group behind Brazil on goal difference. Ecuador came back from an 0-2 deficit in a Copa America match for the first time since 1983 against Argentina. Ecuador is at third spot with two points. They take on Haiti on Sunday in East Rutherford. Peru meets Brazil in Foxborough the same night.

Guess who came to dinner The Chudasama home at Malabar Hill had a high- profile visitor last evening when Former HRD minister Murli Manohar Joshi dropped by to meet his old friend, Mumbai’s eternal Sheriff, and the man whose bon mots best defined the city’s political chutzpah - Nana Chudasama. "He was happy to receive daddy’s book, History On a Banner, as it is a chronicle of political events," says Chudasama’s doting daughter, BJP spokesperson Shaina NC about the encounter. "And he said he has quoted from many of daddy’s banners in parliament. " Murli Manohar Joshi with Nana and Munira Chudasama and Shaina NC What’s more, the erudite Joshi, the only Lok Sabha MP to win four times from Allahabad and who also represented constituencies in Varanasi and Kanpur (which when you come to think of it is the entire Ganga Arti) is said to have spoken fluent English throughout the evening, allowed himself to be persuaded to stay on for a simple and delicious home-cooked meal supervised by the graceful Munira Chudasama, herself the daughter of a venerable and renowned clan from Mumbai. From Commerce to the Arts The kerfuffle over the Guardian’s damning critique of the Bhupen Khakhar exhibition at the Tate reminded us of the oft-repeated comment about Khakhar, heard amongst artists of a certain ilk; "Bhupen Khakhar entered the Samovar as a CA and left as an artist. " Bhupen Khakhar and Sunil Kothari To be sure, the soft-spoken and self-effacing alumnus of Sydenham College, was part of an exclusive group of talented men who’d wandered into the hallowed portals of the city’s leading commerce college, when they ought to have been in a liberal arts one. The celebrated dance critic Sunil Kothari who’d taught at the college was another, and our friend, the aesthete son of the legendary Bimal Roy, Joy Roy is another. Those were the days when educational institutions were strictly divided into watertight compartments of learning, where those who were inclined towards the arts or science or commerce were neatly segregated. Khakhar broke out of that mould to go on to become one of the country’s leading artists. And regardless of what the Guardian says - India’s art world is richer for it. Pipped again? It’s so rare to hear Anil Ambani’s top guy Amitabh Jhunjhunwala say anything to the media, that when the Group Managing Director and Vice- Chairman of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group recently asserted that the company he headed was not the country’s most indebted group as projected by Credit Suisse in its House of Debts, it made the financial community sit up and take notice. Amitabh Jhunjhunwala Jhunjhunwala’s point is that financial services business operations differ intrinsically from non-financial services businesses, and to compare Reliance ADAG with groups like Tata and Birla was akin to comparing apples and oranges. ADAG Reliance, he averred, should be placed alongside banks such as SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI, PNB, Axis Bank, which by these dynamics had larger debts to service. What made his argument interesting is Jhunjhunwala’s claim that there were at least four traditional business groups ahead of his group on gross debt basis. "Which are the four he alluded to? " commented a Dalal street type on hearing the news. "Wonder if he counted RIL in that group? If so, that makes one more list in which elder brother Mukesh leads," he chuckled. Diva’s big day A surfeit of love came the way of the gorgeous Dimple Kapadia who celebrated her birthday on Monday. Dimple Kapadia The senders were her old pals Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, who posted this picture of the diva with the words: Happy Birthday #themostbeautiful #dimplekapadia #our #muse #bestfriend #love #abujanisandeepkhosla #classic #chikan #allhandmade #instastar #instadiva #instastyle #instabeauty #instaforever #bollywoodbest #happiness #always #ajsk #trendsetters #always #original #weloveyou @dk_dimple_kapadia Sweet! Piquant pairing Two beautiful, high-born girls, from very similar backgrounds, whose parents had once been the toast of the NRI crowd, now find themselves once more linked in a piquant way: the former husband of one is now dating the other. "The situation is really interesting as unbeknownst to the dashing middle- aged man in question, the lives of his former wife and current GF have been inextricably linked already," says a London-based gent who’s known both families for Yonkers. "It is of course a hilarious situation only rescued by the fact that all concerned parties are dealing with this new development with great dignity and tact. But it’s straight out of a movie script," he says. Indeed. Time for a RE-THINK? Has the time come to reassess our response to the Tarun Tejpal THINK brouhaha now that the need for strong liberal voices is called for? In retrospect, the relentless media campaign that shredded the once darling of the intelligentsia could be regarded as excessive. Tarun Tejpal No doubt Tejpal had committed a grave error. One that pricked the bubble of his public image and gave his detractors ammunition to demolish him, but was there really need for such a vociferous dragging through the coals? This line of thinking has been finding more and more takers especially now when regressive thoughts and actions seem to rule. A discredited Tejpal, though out on bail, after all is not in any condition to fight the good fight. However, as predicted by this column, the rehabilitation of the once celebrated writer is underway: word comes in that his high- profile festival for the country’s intelligentsia will resume as early as next year. If this is true we won’t be surprised. After all, everyone makes a comeback in India. Ask the politicians.

Government slow to regulate Uber Justice Project SA chairman Howard Dembovsky made this comment following the intimidation of Uber drivers and passengers by metered taxi drivers outside the Gautrain Park Station on Wednesday evening. Uber South Africa confirmed it was aware of the intimidation occurring at Park Station and said it was taking all of the necessary steps to resolve this issue as soon as possible. “We are working with private security‚ Johannesburg Metro Police department‚ the South African Police Service‚ and all other relevant stakeholders.” Dembovsky said one could not blame metered taxi operators for being angry with the fact that they were regulated and Uber was not. “There is an element of gangsterism‚ However‚ violence is directed at the wrong people. Anger should be directed at people who have caused the problem‚ the department of transport.” However‚ Gauteng transport MEC Ismail Vadi had begun efforts to register Uber drivers as public transport operators. Last month‚ the department launched the process of regulating Uber partners as public transport operators. Vadi said last month‚ the current legislation stated that metered taxis should have a sealed meter box which must indicate a fare‚ whereas Uber had a handheld device which indicated the cost of the fare. Vadi said the current legal situation had not accommodated e-hailing services and that an amendment to legislation would be introduced in Parliament. Vadi said he had been led to believe there were 2‚500 Uber operators in Gauteng and said all had to be registered as public transport operators. The department said on Thursday that the issue of intimidation was best handled by law enforcement as it only dealt with licensing of operators.

65 Smog alert issued The Air Quality Scale used in Atlanta: “Good” AQI is 0 to 50. Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk. “Moderate” AQI is 51 to 100. Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people. For example, people who are unusually sensitive to ozone may experience respiratory symptoms. “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” AQI is 101 to 150. Although the general public is not likely to be affected at this AQI range, people with lung disease, older adults and children are at a greater risk from exposure to ozone, whereas persons with heart and lung disease, older adults and children are at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air. “Unhealthy” AQI is 151 to 200. 66 Give Peace Prize to 'Palestinian Mandela'‚ Tutu urges Nobel bigwigs The emeritus archbishop‚ who was awarded the prize in 1984 for what the Nobel committee described as his "role as a unifying leader figure in the campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa"‚ made the nomination in a letter on Monday to the committee. Barghouthi‚ 57‚ has been dubbed "the Palestinian Mandela"‚ and a campaign for his freedom was launched from the former president's Robben Island cell in 2013 by Ahmed Kathrada‚ one of Mandela's comrades during their imprisonment on the island‚ and Barghouthi’s wife‚ Fadwa. The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation welcomed Tutu’s Nobel nomination of Barghouthi‚ which was echoed by fellow Nobel Laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel‚ the 84-year-old Argentine human rights activist awarded the prize in 1980. “When individuals of this calibre make such a call‚ it not only reiterates the faith that Palestinians and members of the international community have in Barghouthi‚ but puts Israel’s occupation and the imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians‚ back in the spotlight‚” said foundation director Neeshan Balton. In his nomination‚ Tutu called on the committee to “seize this occasion to bring attention back to the question of Palestine and to the calls for a just and lasting peace‚ a prospect Marwan Barghouthi continues advocating and acting for‚ despite years of imprisonment and isolation”. He added that his nomination of Barghouthi “constitutes a clear signal of support for the realisation of the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights‚ including to self-determination”. Barghouthi was the first Palestinian parliamentarian to be arrested by Israel in 2002 and was sentenced to a lifetime in prison. His Nobel nomination has been supported by Belgian parliamentarians‚ and the so-called Tunisian Quartet awarded the Peace Prize in 2015 recently dedicated their award to Barghouthi. “Irrespective of what Barghouthi has been charged for by the Israeli apartheid state‚ he is key to Palestinian unity‚ and to negotiating a peaceful settlement‚" said Balton. "Mandela was labelled a terrorist and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was‚ however‚ central to South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy. Barghouthi’s release‚ together with that of all Palestinian political prisoners‚ will signal Israel’s willingness to negotiate a peaceful settlement.” Kathrada said Tutu was a global moral compass. “Comrade Arch‚ as I call him‚ has dedicated his life to the principles of peace‚ justice and reconciliation. Tutu knew‚ as did most South Africans prior to democracy‚ that the freedom of Mandela and all political prisoners was the only way to negotiating peace in in the country. "So when this ‘moral-compass’ nominates Barghouthi for the highest international accolade‚ it should be celebrated and supported by all peace- loving individuals. Only those who support occupation‚ injustice and apartheid‚ would dare to differ.” Tutu‚ in his letter‚ elaborated on Barghouthi’s role as a figure of peace in the region: “Marwan Barghouthi has fought for freedom and peace and has formulated the correlation between these two struggles by stating that the last day of this Israeli occupation will be the first day of peace. "He has drafted from behind bars the prisoners’ document signed by Palestinian leaders from across the political spectrum‚ which constitutes till today a basis for the efforts towards national reconciliation enjoying wide national consensus‚ as well as a political programme to achieve unity‚ freedom and peace.” Tutu noted that Barghouthi was a “defender of democracy and human rights‚ including women rights‚ and of pluralism‚ both religious and political”. "I hope the Nobel Committee will take a bold decision bringing us closer to the day this holy land‚ charged with unique symbolic value‚ can stop being a living testimony of injustice and impunity‚ occupation and apartheid‚ and can finally be a beacon of freedom‚ hope and peace. "

Long way to go: Alastair Cook on matching up to Sachin Tendulkar London: He might have beaten Sachin Tendulkar's record of being the youngest to 10,000 runs but England captain Alastair Cook says he is well aware that he is nothing like the "incredibly talented genius" from India and has a long way to go before matching up to him. Alastair Cook and Sachin Tendulkar Cook became the 12th player in history to score 10,000 Test runs during England's nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka at Durham last month but he is nearly 6,000 runs short of Tendulkar's record aggregate of 15,921 runs from 200 matches. The left-handed opener, 31, broke Tendulkar's earlier record of being the youngest to score 10,000 Test runs by more than five months. Also Read: Match fixers should be banned for life, says Alastair Cook Cook, who has now scored 10,042 runs in 128 Tests, said Tendulkar's record Test runs are a long way off for him as of now. "Six thousand runs is a long way away. It was set by an incredibly talented genius. I'm no genius and Tendulkar is, so that is a long way ahead," Cook said at the Lord's ahead of the third Test against Sri Lanka. "I want to play for England for as long as I can and at the moment I'm really enjoying it. I am really motivated and hungry and where that takes me who knows. " "I've never lived my life by saying where I want to get to publicly. In private you have a few goals you want to try and achieve, but at the moment a lot of my goals are very immediate with this England team and as a captain that takes me away from personal milestones as a batter. " The England skipper has 28 Test hundreds to his name at an average of 47, whereas Tendulkar bowed out of Test cricket with a record 51 centuries at an average of nearly 54. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, the first man to score 10,000 Test runs, said last week that Cook had it in him to set a new aggregate record for most Test runs because of his age and the fact that England play more games over the long format than many other nations.

Environment ministry fostering a regime of killing animals: Maneka Gandhi New Delhi: Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Thursday accused Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar of encouraging a regime of 'killing animals' across the country. "Environment ministry is writing to every state, asking which animal should be killed and that they will give permission for it," said Gandhi, a well-known animal rights activist. Maneka Gandhi "In Bengal, they (environment ministry) have permitted the killing of elephants, in Himachal Pradesh they have ordered killing of monkeys, and in Goa they gave permission to kill peacocks," she stated. She said that she could not understand the environment ministry's "lust for killing animals". "In Chandrapur, they have killed 53 wild boars and have given permission to kill 50 more. Even their own wildlife department said that they don't want to kill the animals. I don't understand their lust for killing animals," Gandhi told reporters. She also held the environment minister responsible for killing animals. Asked about Prakash Javadekar's role in it, she said: "Now you tell me what could be the role? He only has to give permission. This is the first time environment ministry is giving permission to killing animals. "

Bereaved anger over Father's Day Jawbone email advert The wearable tech firm Jawbone has been accused of being insensitive and distressing to people whose fathers have died. The US company sent out an email to thousands of recipients with the subject line: "Re: Your Dad". The header was intended to be an attention-grabbing way to promote its products as Father's Day gifts. But it sparked criticism from dozens of recipients on social media, one of whom said it had induced a panic attack. "It was so personal, and at first it was even hard to tell what that email was about, unless you looked further beyond the subject line or looked at the sender," Diana Sargsyan, a marketing student whose father died five years ago, told the BBC. "I immediately thought: What about him? Who in the world would send me an email about my dad? I got a little scared even. "Ever since my dad has passed, I've been dealing with a lot, which includes depression, anxiety, therapy, you name it. Only for the past couple of months I've been feeling better, and this email just crushed me. " Jawbone declined to comment and has not publicly replied to the criticism on Twitter. But a charity suggested the ads should have been better thought out. "We know how distressing this period can be for bereaved people and would welcome companies taking the time to think more about the headlines of their email marketing campaigns and the impact these have on bereaved people," said a spokeswoman for Cruse Bereavement Care. Jawbone's ads risk causing it additional bad publicity at a time when questions have been asked about its future. Reports suggest the San Francisco-based firm is trying to sell off its speaker business and its chief executive recently felt compelled to issue a statement denying rumours that it planned to stop making hardware altogether. One advertising industry expert suggested the "backfired" emails had not helped. "It's important that companies using email marketing campaigns respect the intimacy of people's inboxes," said Maisie McCabe, acting UK editor of Campaign. "When planning any activity, brands need to consider the potential pitfalls. "In this case, Jawbone should have considered how people whose fathers have died or are estranged from them might view such a subject line. "The situation has then been compounded by their failure to respond to the criticism quickly and decisively. "

Five lesser-known driving distractions Drivers using hands-free phones can become just as distracted as those using handsets, a study suggests. But even when drivers aren't on the phone there are plenty of things that can ruin their concentration. It's horrible when you feel eight little legs creeping up your arm. Even drivers without a phobia of spiders can become distracted and agitated. Just a glimpse of one scuttling across the dashboard can be enough. In 2010, a motorist in Devon who threw a spider out of her car window crashed into a man on a charity bike ride. There was another case last year, when a car crashed into a lamp post in Poole, Dorset, after the driver became distracted by a spider. "You need to stop the car and deal with the issue," says Neil Greig, policy and research director at the Institute of Advanced Motorists. "Continuing to drive with that kind of distraction is a bad idea. " Greig says opening the window might help to get rid of the spider, but this still diverts the driver's attention from the road. The Department for Transport doesn't list separate figures for road accidents prompted by arachnids, but overall in 2014 police in Britain said distractions of all kinds inside vehicles had been listed as a cause of 68 deaths and 445 serious accidents. Mobile phones, by contrast, were cited as a cause of 21 deaths and 84 serious accidents. Motorways are dotted with signs warning drivers to take a break. "Tiredness kills," they're told. But their emotional state can be important too. Researchers at Virginia Tech suggest that drivers increase the risk of a crash nearly tenfold when they get behind the wheel "while observably angry, sad, crying, or emotionally agitated". The effect can be as detrimental to road skills as daydreaming, says psychologist Sandi Mann, author of The Upside of Downtime: Why Boredom is Good. "The problem is that you don't want anything that distracts from the task," she says. Mann recommends tailoring the music played in the car to ensure there isn't a "cognitive overload" resulting from songs with too much personal emotional meaning. "You need some upbeat music, just enough to help you concentrate," she adds. CDs designed specifically for use by drivers and truckers work well, Mann says, as do songs by Queen. It's not uncommon to see motorists applying make-up or brushing their hair while stuck in traffic, but to do so while the vehicle is moving is clearly a bad idea. Some men have been caught shaving while driving - presumably without the use of foam and hot towels. In the US, self-grooming behind the wheel is a big enough problem for the road-safety group Decide to Drive to issue advice on how to avoid it. The group recommends getting ready before leaving the house... failing that, it advises drivers to keep items like tweezers, brushes and lipstick off the passenger seat to keep temptation at bay. In the UK, there's no specific offence of self-grooming while in control of a motorised vehicle, but it is covered by laws against careless driving. The scope of the problem is unknown, but Greig says it goes on in the UK and recommends - as when a spider is present - pulling over before taking action. A recent survey in Australia suggested that 59.2% of male drivers were distracted by "good-looking women". Women were less easily swayed, 15.2% reporting the same reaction to attractive men. It's not just Australians who are affected, says Greig. "It's definitely an issue, particularly in the summer. " In 1994, a billboard advertisement showing the model Eva Herzigova wearing just a bra, and bearing the message "Hello, boys", was blamed for causing accidents and slowing down people's commute to work. Greig doesn't offer a specific solution to this form of distraction, but encourages people to "take their driving seriously", blanking out imagined pleasures of the flesh whenever possible. What the Australian survey does highlight is that it's not just what happens inside a vehicle that puts drivers off. The Department for Transport says in 2014 police reported 19 deaths and 206 serious accidents in which a distraction outside the vehicle was listed as a cause. There's nothing more annoying than trying to drive when kids are shouting and fighting in the back, right? Well, actually there is, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents suggests - adults. Over-18s are listed as a distraction by 22.9% of drivers, it says, basing this on research carried out in the US. Only 12.9% said the same of children. Could one reason for this be that parents are so used to a racket from their kids that it becomes little more than background noise? "It might be that arguments with adults are a little more emotionally involved," says Greig. Mann says chatting between adults can actually stimulate the driver, as it prevents weariness, but recommends not overdoing it. And if an unavoidable row is brewing, the same advice applies as for dealing with spiders and the urge to self-groom: pull over first. 76 Danny Jordaan sets out ambitious plans for Mandela Bay metro‚ amid heckling by municipal workers Jordaan‚ who is also president of the South African Football Association (Safa)‚ has been in office for 12 months‚ after being jettisoned into the metro by the African National Congress. Delivering his state of the metro address on Thursday‚ he said that under his watch the troubled metro had seen a significant turn-around‚ with improved financial management and service delivery record. The metro was named and shamed by Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu earlier this month in his 2014/15 report on local governments. The coastal city alone accounted for 42% of the R1‚34-billion of fruitless and wasteful expenditure found across all municipalities. In addition‚ the metro's fruitless and wasteful expenditure amounted to R423-million in the year. The improved credit rating by international agency Moody’s for the metro last month was evidence of its road to financial recovery‚ Jordaan said. “You cannot argue against success and progress. Accelerated service delivery continues to be our thread. This is solely as a result of improved efficiencies in the administration. We are not here to make promises‚ but to report on milestones.” Earlier in the day‚ as Jordaan made his way to the Feathermarket Hall in the CBD‚ a group of municipal workers from different departments protested outside‚ hurling insults at him. They said their action was in support of their 36 safety and security colleagues who were suspended and fired‚ allegedly for challenging the establishment of the new metro police force. The protest lasted about 15 minutes‚ before the police came and the crowd dispersed. Inside the hall‚ Jordaan announced that government would build 7‚000 houses in the metro in the next financial year. “This also includes paying attention to the so-called toilet city in Khayamnandi (township)”‚ Jordaan said. Two years ago‚ the municipality built hundreds of toilets with the aim of relocating residents to the area. However‚ the relocation process was delayed‚ leading to harsh criticism from opposition parties that government had built toilets without houses. The administrative stability in the human settlements department‚ especially the housing delivery unit‚ had been restored‚ Jordaan said. “We are in full control of the entire housing delivery value chain and are also rooting out fraud and corruption.” He said since taking over a year ago‚ the private sector had invested R20- billion in the city‚ which he claimed was a sign of improved public confidence in his team’s leadership. Jordaan boasted that the city had allocated R20-million for the metro police. Port Elizabeth’s northern areas - the highly contested communities which the ANC is fighting to win back - would be allocated R200-million. Jordaan also announced that the city would be creating six cultural hubs in townships to develop arts and culture among the youth. “If we can achieve all of this in 12 months‚ imagine what we can do in five years‚” Jordaan concluded to loud applause. The Nelson Mandela Bay council recently passed a R10.8-billion pro-poor budget‚ designed to appease some of the city’s most destitute. Tariff hikes of 9.5% for property rates‚ 9% for water‚ sanitation and refuse and 7.6% for electricity come into effect on July 1.

Houston man gets life for 9th DWI conviction A Houston man's ninth DWI conviction has landed him in prison for the rest of his life. He had been racking up the convictions since 1980, according to reports. Donald Middleton, 56, had already spent at least four stints behind prison walls for his drunken-driving convictions before he was arrested and charged in May 2015 for a new DWI charge in Montgomery County. Even after all those run-ins with the law over drunk driving, the man still maintained a valid Texas driver's license. RELATED: 10th DWI gets Texas man life sentence in jail He had hit a 16-year-old driver head on in the most recent incident and later fled to a nearby gas station looking for a place to hide out, according to KTRK-TV. The teenager, the son of Montgomery County Precinct Four Constable Rowdy Hayden, survived the accident. Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Justin Fowles told the outlet that Middleton pleaded guilty the same month as the accident, just a day before he was set to begin his trial. Judge Kathleen Hamilton sentenced him to life in prison this week. RELATED: Spring dad charged with DWI after child falls out of moving car According to the Montgomery County Police Reporter, Middleton took the stand during his sentencing proceedings and told the court that his drinking began as a freshman in high school after years of being picked on by classmates. The outlet reported that Middleton showed no remorse for his latest crash. Middleton's girlfriend told the court later that she thought that he could be rehabilitated. "To me there was no question that we needed to do everything that we could to ensure he wouldn't be on the roads driving with our friends, our families, our kids on the road putting everyone at risk," Fowles told reporters after the sentence was handed down. According to Harris County court records Middleton was charged with his first DWI when he was 20 years old. He also faced charges in 1983, 1992, 1993, twice in 1997, 1999, and 2008. In 1993 he faced a separate charge of possessing crack cocaine. Back in 1980 the punishment for DWI was a $200 fine and 60 days in jail.

The 'pettiness' behind gun-related violence in Texas Violence is never the answer, and yet some Texans are finding strange reasons to commit acts of brutality on their fellow man. Combing through the Gun Violence Archive , we found more than several incidents where the offending party's reasoning for shooting at other persons was largely "petty. " RELATED: When are crimes reported in Houston? In once case, a young girl was shot and injured while she was sleeping inside her home. Outside, investigators said the offending party had backed into a vehicle on the driveway and entered into an argument with the homeowner. The situation escalated and shots were fired that struck the house. You can see for yourself how ridiculously tragic these shootings are in the gallery above. (h/t Washington Post)

79 NTSB cites pilot error in 2015 Ship Channel crash Errors by a Houston Ship Channel pilot were the probable cause of a collision between two ships that led to a major chemical spill last year in the busy, narrow waterway, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The federal agency tasked with investigating marine and aviation accidents nationwide concluded that the pilot's failure to communicate as he guided the Conti Peridot through thickening fog toward the Port of Houston contributed to its collision with an outbound chemical tanker. It also found that the pilot failed to adequately control the 33,036-ton vessel. The crash on March 9, 2015, caused the spill of 88,000 gallons of a hazardous substance called methyl tert-butyl ether, or MTBE - a volatile and highly flammable substance used as an additive in gasoline. The collision between the Conti Peridot and the 29,289-ton tanker, the Carla Maersk , is the fifth accident in the Ship Channel investigated by the NTSB since 2011. Two of the most recent crashes involved heavy fog, communication errors and major chemical or oil spills, NTSB reports show. Pilot errors were flagged in at least three of those cases. In a summary of the latest investigation released in Washington this week, NTSB chairman Christopher Hart urged Houston officials to take action to improve safety in the channel especially during the onset of heavy fog. "Houston's port is one of the busiest in the world. Vessels of all shapes and sizes must successfully share the waters of the Houston Ship Channel, "Hart said. "They range from small sport watercraft and fishing boats to deep- draft ships... It is vitally important that all of these diverse vessels, large and small, be able to navigate this narrow channel safely. " Hazardous weather The new NTSB report specifically calls on the port's Lone Star Safety Committee - a diverse Houston-based group that includes pilots, government officials and industry representatives - to study how to improve safety in heavy fog or other potentially hazardous weather conditions. Among measures the agency recommended considering are increased vessel separation, one-way traffic and/or anchoring. The report also called on Houston pilots to emphasize "better bridge management" and "timely communication. " A spokesman for the Houston Pilots Association , Henry de la Garza , said the pilots welcomed "the release of the NTSB findings and recommendations. " "We will reserve any comment until we have read and studied the full report and discussed it with our port partners," he added. "Until then we are in no position to say anything about it. " On the day of the accident the Conti Peridot, a 623-foot-long bulk carrier, was inbound from Mexico with a load of steel coils at about 9:30 a.m. That same morning, the Carla Maersk, a chemical tanker, was outbound from the Port of Houston, laden with nine million gallons of MTBE. Both vessels were guided by Houston-based pilots who boarded the vessels while visibility was good, according to the NTSB. Then a dense fog rolled in. By 11:30 a.m., Houston pilots suspended additional in-bound travel, but those already in the channel continued to make their way through. At times, the pilot aboard the Conti Peridot could barely see the bow only 400 feet away. After meeting and passing the first of a line of outbound ships, he began to lose control of the vessel, Hart said in his statement. Barely a minute before meeting the tanker Carla Maersk, the Conti Peridot's pilot radioed a warning: "Try to miss me, coming across the channel. " By then, it was too late. At 12:30 p.m. the bow of the Conti Peridot struck the tanker, causing $8.2 million in damage. The resulting chemical spill prompted an order for area residents to shelter in place to avoid toxic fumes. The channel remained closed for three days. The Port of Houston's online records show that in December 2015, the agency's Pilot Board Investigation and Recommendation Committee conducted its own review of the collision and unanimously found that both pilots "acted with prudent seamanship. " As part of the testimony, the committee was told that the Conti Peridot lacked sufficient power and did not respond as expected to the pilot's commands. The committee recommended further training, but no disciplinary action. Pilot board to meet Port of Houston commissioners, who also act as the Board of Pilot Commissioners , voted in March to defer action until the NTSB released its full investigation. Port spokesman Lisa Ashley , said Wednesday that the pilot board will meet to consider the full NTSB report whenever it becomes available. After its hearing, the committee proposed that Capt. Chris Reeser , the pilot for the Conti Peridot, work to develop or refine his bridge leadership skills and instructed him to record his problems with the Conti Peridot in so-called "ship notes. " Reeser and his attorney could not immediately be reached for comment. In some ways, the collision was similar to another accident studied by the NTSB that occurred in heavy fog on the channel on March 22, 2014, that created the largest oil spill in Texas in a decade - the collision of a bulk carrier with a towing vessel pushing a line of tank barges filled with heavy fuel oil. In that case, NTSB officials described the "probable cause" of the accident as the towing vessel captain's decision to try to cross the channel far too late. But the NTSB also faulted the pilot and the captain for failing to communicate and blamed port officials for failing to help prevent such collisions through better policies and planning. Though communications can always be improved, Richard Ford , a former Coast Guard official who serves on the Port of Houston's pilot board investigations committee, said he's skeptical about how much can be done through planning to respond to the shifting waves of fog that present a recurring seasonal hazard and can be impossible to detect. "You can always be assured that between January and the first of May that you're going to have accidents that are attributable to fog - response times are down for everybody - there's less room for error," he said.

Cabinet distances itself from Dirco response to US terror alert Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Jeff Radebe told reporters on Thursday that the official statements on the recent terror alert were those released by the Presidency as well as Cabinet’s subsequent statement. The US Embassy maintained that its terror alert to its citizens over the weekend to exercise caution due to terror threats in shopping areas and malls in South Africa was based on specific and credible information. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation released a scathing statement on Wednesday‚ in which it accused the US of attempting to manipulate SA’s counterterrorism work by using an alert which was based on “sketchy” information. On the same day the Presidency released a statement which said that the security concerns of the US were being attended to through security cluster meetings and that the two countries enjoyed cordial bilateral relations. Speaking to reporters in Pretoria Mr Radebe reiterated the Presidency statement‚ adding it was the “official” statement on the matter. "The statement by the presidency and the statement today are the official statements of government. I will not be speaking on other statements. The ministers in the security cluster met yesterday and are likely to communicate the outcomes of that meeting themselves‚" he said. Radebe said the US Embassy’s statement‚ also released on Wednesday‚ “reflected that the relations of SA and the US are cordial especially on matters of security”. “The official government position was reiterated in the Presidency statement and is being expressed in our cabinet statement. We are continuing on those matters socially and economically and on matters of security‚” he said. The US Embassy security alert prompted the British and Australian governments to revise their travel advisories to their citizens in SA to reflect the security concern.

I don't consider comic series an entry into showbiz: Rohit Sharma New Delhi: Star batsman Rohit Sharma, who will be seen in a superhero avatar in the digital comic series "Hyper Tygers" that was launched on Thursday, says he took the leap from the sports world to the creative field as "it marries" his concerns with his "passion". However, he doesn't feel that it marks his entry into the entertainment industry. Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit shared that he considers the comic series, launched in collaboration with Graphic India, Britain-based ISM Komix and Cornerstone Sport, as a bridge to "reach out to" his fans. Hyper Tygers is touted as the world's first superhero cricket team that plays futuristic 'Hyper Cricket' to save the environment, their village, and the world. "If you care about your future and the future of your kids, then now is the time to take action and go green - I have always believed this. This opportunity immediately appealed to me. It marries my concerns with my passion, and the fit was unbeatable," Rohit told IANS in an exclusive email interview. "I do not view it so much as me entering the entertainment industry at all, but more in the light of 'I can now use this medium to reach out to my fan base and share messaging that I care about, with a positive outcome for the planet'. " The "Hyper Tygers" e-books are available on DailyHunt starting Thursday and can be accessed free of charge for the first two weeks, after which each chapter will be priced at Rs 10. A new chapter of "Hyper Tygers" will be released every week. What role do you think comics play in sending out a social message? "I think that all media has the ability to communicate messages, no matter if it's TV, cinema, theatre or books. 'Hyper Tygers' as a comic book and an animated series (on digital platforms) is uniquely positioned in a way that they reach out to an audience of all age groups and the massive world of cricket fans. "If we can embed the idea of being champions for the environment in everybody's minds, then we can hope to make the world a better place for everyone," he said. "Hyper Tygers" is set in a futuristic India (in the year 2077) where technology is super-advanced. In fact, cricket has also been upgraded with a 'futuristic' twist for the series. The superheroes play 'Hyper Cricket' -- which infuses technology to the sport -- and Rohit feels that "by showing a world in which cricket idols are making a difference, we hope to create tremendous impact with the comic and show that everyone, no matter who they are, can make a difference". Calling it a "great" concoction, Rohit says it "has been a long time coming", adding that the story is at par with any "graphic novel on a global level". Xan Morgan, who was part of Prime Minister David Cameron's 2012 trade delegation to India, representing the environment and water from Britain, is the co-creator of the series. "Hyper Tygers" is also developing original storylines with British charity Elephant Family, founded by Mark Shand, brother of Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. ISM Komix and Graphic India will also be planning a worldwide animation, digital video and gaming strategy around "Hyper Tygers". The cricketer feels "it is never too young to create an awareness for the preservation of the environment in a child's mind or anybody's mind. Today we need this more than we ever did. " Rohit is considered to be a youth icon, and he says with the role comes responsibility to "inspire people". "I try to do that with my career and I hope to do that with the 'Hyper Tygers' comic and animated series. If people look to the example of the 'Hyper Tygers' to try to be the best at cricket while trying to be more environmentally conscious I'm confident we can make the world a better place sooner rather than later," he said.

The Latest: Romania not awe-struck by French PARIS (AP) — The Latest on the European Championship football tournament in France (all times local): ___ 4:30 p.m. Romania coach Anghel Iordanescu is far from overawed at the prospect of playing host France in Friday's European Championship opener. "We hope to show you that we are a real match for the French side," he said through a translator. "We need to be very clear in our mind what the French are going to do. " France has won nine of its past 10 matches, but Romania was unbeaten in qualifying with the best defensive record — conceding just two goals in 10 games. "We've worked with the video analysts to devise a team plan," Iordanescu added at a pre-match news conference held at the Stade de France. "Our plan is to compete on an even footing. " He anticipates an early onslaught. "I expect France to begin the match in a rather aggressive fashion," he said. "I'm sure our players are ready to overcome these spells of pressure and domination. " ___ 3:15 p.m. Strikes have thrown train services to France's national stadium into disarray before the European Championship opening game it hosts on Friday night. Two overland trains, the RERs B and D, link the Stade de France in Paris' northern suburbs to the city center. The national SNCF rail company said strikes wiped out two- thirds of RER B trains on Thursday and that six out of 10 trains weren't running on the RER D. It is working on a fallback plan to try to ensure that fans can still use trains to reach the 80,000-seat stadium for France vs. Romania at 9.p.m on Friday. An underground Metro line to the stadium was running normally and will have extra trains for the game, but is generally crowded at the best of times. ____ 3:05 p.m. UEFA says all 24 teams taking part in the European soccer championships have arrived in France. Portugal players were the last to arrive on Thursday, landing at Paris's second airport Orly, where they were greeted by about 200 fans. Portugal players traveled in a plane bearing the name Eusebio, a tribute to the late Portugal striker. Fernando Santos' squad has set up its training base at the French rugby federation's national center of Marcoussis, in the Paris' outskirts. Portugal is in Group F and opens its campaign on Tuesday against Iceland in Saint-Etienne. The Euro starts on Friday at the Stade de France when host France takes on Romania. ___ 11:40 a.m. Bar and restaurants owners won't be allowed to set up TV screens outside their businesses during the European soccer championship. The move is aimed at improving security during the tournament, with French authorities expecting fewer people will gather if outdoor screens are banned. France has been under a state of emergency since last November's coordinated attacks which killed 130 people at a rock concert, on the terraces of bars and restaurants and outside the Stade de France, the stadium where the football tournament will begin on Friday. Junior minister for sports Thierry Braillard said Thursday that official fan zones are the only outdoor public spaces where screens will be installed. The ban is expected to annoy bar owners, especially in the south of France were people spend warm summer evenings outdoors. ___ 11.15 a.m. Only last Christmas, Marcus Rashford was plotting how to get into Manchester United's under-21 team. Now, he is preparing to potentially play his first game at a major international tournament. Speaking to the English national team's website in a rare interview, the 18-year-old striker says of his whirlwind rise to prominence: "It doesn't seem real. " Rashford made his debut for United in February as a late injury replacement, and scored two goals in a Europa League match. He also scored twice on his Premier League debut three days later, the winner in his first Manchester derby and then netted inside three minutes on his England debut last month, prompting a call-up by England for the European Championship. Rashford says "at the end of the season you hear talk and stuff, but to be here now is just amazing. " England plays Russia on Saturday in their first Group B match.

FCC: Obamaphone fraud nears $500 million Contact WND (WASHINGTONEXAMINER) — The federal subsidy known as the “Obamaphone” or “Obamanet” program could be losing nearly $500 million to fraud annually, according to a top Republican on the Federal Communications Commission. Commissioner Ajit Pai made the accusation Wednesday in letter to the Universal Service Administrative Company, referring to the FCC’s Universal Service Fund, which provides a monthly $9.95 subsidy for telecom service to low-income consumers. The subsidy is limited to one per “independent economic household,” or IEH, but telecom companies have the ability to override that restriction if applicants check a box stating they represent a separate household, even if they have the same address. 2016-06-09 14:34 www.wnd.com

Iraq violence: Islamic State attacks kill dozens Two suicide attacks claimed by so-called Islamic State (IS) have killed at least 30 people in and around the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, officials say. The first attack targeted a commercial area in the mainly Shia district of Jadidah, to the east, leaving 19 dead. A second bomb hit an army checkpoint in Taji, north of the capital, killing 11 people, including soldiers. The Sunni jihadist group has frequently attacked security targets and Shia Muslims, whom it considers apostates. The group has intensified its attacks in Baghdad as the Iraqi army continues a major offensive to try to drive it from the IS stronghold of Falluja, 60km (37 miles) west of the capital. More than 80 people were injured in the attacks, which happened at about 09:00 (06:00 GMT). What is Islamic State? IS still controls large swathes of territory in the country's north and west, including Mosul, Iraq's second largest city. The group is also under pressure in neighbouring Syria, where it has been targeted by government forces and US-backed rebels. 17 May 2016: Four bomb blasts kill 69 people in Baghdad; three of the targets were Shia areas 11 May 2016 : Car bombs in Baghdad kill 93 people , including 64 in market in Shia district of Sadr City 1 May 2016 : Two car bombs kill at least 33 people in southern city of Samawa 26 March 2016: Suicide attack targets football match in central city of Iskandariya, killing at least 32 6 March 2016: Fuel tanker blown up at checkpoint near central city of Hilla, killing 47 28 February 2016: Twin suicide bomb attacks hit market in Sadr City, killing 70

How monsoon rains lift India's spirit and economy They are finally here, the monsoons, India's most important weather phenomenon. After days of speculation about the date, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Wednesday that the monsoons had arrived in Kerala. India receives 80% of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season, which runs between June and September. The monsoon will gradually spread across India by 15 July, bringing cheer, hope, insects, relief from the heat, better farm output, GDP growth and lower inflation. There is no aspect of Indian life, its politics or economy, which is not affected by the monsoons. It had been raining in large parts of south India for over a week, but the IMD was reluctant to declare the monsoon had arrived. Private weather forecaster Skymet thinks the monsoon arrived on 30 May. "The IMD has a very objective criteria to declare the monsoon but it is subjectively applied," said Jatin Singh, CEO of SkyMet. The date of landfall of the monsoon rains is a big psychological issue for 1.25 billion Indians, who are always wondering if the rains they are seeing are pre-monsoon showers or the "real thing". Even after the landfall is declared, there is no guarantee it will be a good monsoon. Last year, the pre-monsoon showers were promising, but the monsoon rains themselves were deficient, leading to a second successive year of drought. At least 330 million Indians are presently affected by drought. The waiting this year has therefore been more anxious. The arrival of the monsoons is like finding a river after crossing a desert. This year, a deluge is predicted. Weather forecasters expect at least 5-6% more rainfall than usual. This will affect things ranging from bank interest to the fortunes of the fertiliser industry. It will also alleviate the drinking water crisis in many parts by replenishing ground water. Weather forecasting has improved lately in India, and efforts are under way to replace a nearly century-old forecasting method with new high-tech means. A long history of inaccurate forecasts, however, means that people don't easily trust it. The confusion gives rise to speculation and prayer. In April a group of people even went to India's most popular Sufi shrine to pray for good rains. Rituals to induce a good monsoon include marrying frogs. Nearly half of Indians still depend on agriculture for their incomes. A bad monsoon increases their debts, and therefore suicides. Hence the desperation to know in advance if the south-eastern winds coming over from the Bay of Bengal are bringing good news. Water droplets accumulate on the ceiling of a century old temple in Kanpur just before the monsoons. If the droplets are big enough, it is believed a good monsoon is round the corner. The matter is serious enough for scientists to study the temple. One of the oldest ragas in Indian classical music, Malhar, is dedicated to the monsoons. The Malhar raga is believed to be so powerful, that it can induce rain if sung well. Many medieval musicians were supposed to have been blessed with such mastery of Raga Malhar. Everyone in India would wish for such powers. Last month, India recorded its hottest day since weather records have been kept. Registering 51C in the state of Rajasthan, the headline was representative of India reeling under the collective pressure of a heat wave lasting weeks. Unless one has been through the full test of an Indian summer, one cannot fully appreciate the blessing of the monsoon rains. When regular torrential showers change the weather for good, it is a new lease of life. Different parts of India have different festivals associated with the monsoon. But the joy doesn't last long. The hot summer gives way to complaints of "It's not the heat it's the humidity". Meanwhile insects and mosquitoes multiply, bringing diseases in their wake. As the Indian farmer sows a new crop, the city folk face water-logging that makes it difficult to get out. Sometimes it rains so much, especially in the financial nerve centre of Mumbai, that the city is flooded. But none of those troubles take away from India's romance with the monsoons, an association so old classical poets have written odes to it . For the great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, it was on rain that "impregnation in the entire universe" rests. Rain makes "earth a comely courtesan/attired in the green silk of grass/wearing silver ornaments of sprung-up mushroom/ ruby of purple coloured worm of moist fields", he wrote. 95 Millions of stolen Twitter logins put on sale More than 32 million Twitter login names and passwords are reportedly being offered for sale online. A hacker using the name Tessa88 is asking for 10 bitcoins (£4,000) from anyone that wants to copy the list. It is not yet clear whether the list is genuine or how it has been compiled. Some reports suggest it brings together data stolen from users by malware. In a statement, Twitter said it was "confident" that the data did not emerge from a breach of its network. Information about the list emerged in a blog entry on the website of a company called Leaked Source, which has built a database of login data that has been stolen or leaked. It said the dataset shared with it by Tessa88 contained 32,888,300 records - each one of which listed an email address, username and password. "We have very strong evidence that Twitter was not hacked, rather the consumer was," said the company in its blog. This has been taken to mean that the list has been compiled using data stolen by a virus that returned it to whoever ran the campaign to infect people. Analysis of information supplied with the dataset suggested it had been gathered this way, said Leaked Source. Other information, such as a breakdown of where most victims live, provided further evidence that it had not come from Twitter, it added. Leaked Source said it had taken steps to verify a small number of the email accounts and passwords in the list were genuine. ZDNet said two staff members found on the list verified that the password listed next to their name was accurate but one other staffer said their details were incorrect. A breakdown of email addresses in the list revealed that Russian accounts feature prominently. Russian email addresses make up more than 7.4 million of the total number of login credentials in the list. In a tweet sent soon after it blogged about the data going on sale, Leaked Source said it had been contacted by Twitter's security staff who would now "forcibly" protect users from the data in the list. Separately, Twitter's security boss Michael Coates confirmed it was working with Leaked Source on using credential data in the list to help users. He added: "We have investigated reports of Twitter usernames/passwords on the dark web, and we're confident that our systems have not been breached. " In another statement, Twitter said it had been "working to help keep accounts protected by checking our data against what's been shared from recent other password leaks". Security expert Troy Hunt, who runs a website that lets people check if their login names and accounts are in data breaches shared online, expressed some scepticism about the leak. "Just because we've seen some serious breaches recently doesn't mean we should assume new ones are legit," he said. He advised people to change their Twitter password if it was weak or if people had used the same one for other online services. The sale of the Twitter data comes soon after huge amounts of login data from MySpace and Tumblr were widely shared. Earlier in May, millions of records about LinkedIn credentials were offered for sale online.

Ryan changes rules for spending bills Contact WND (THE HILL) House GOP leaders on Wednesday announced that they will begin restricting contentious amendments on spending bills, a move that critics say violates the party’s commitment to regular order. Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) used most of a conference meeting Wednesday morning to outline the party’s new strategy to unjam the appropriations process. For remaining spending bills, all amendments will be approved by the House Rules Committee before the debate reaches the floor. GOP leaders hope the new rules will lend control to what has been a chaotic appropriations process this spring. Several Republicans in the room said Ryan described it as a last-ditch attempt to block Democrats’ “poison pills,” amendments they say are designed to derail the underlying spending legislation.

When Martin Luther King Jr's assassin fled to London The shooting of Martin Luther King Jr is one of the most infamous murders in American history. For two months, the FBI scoured America to find their prime suspect - the small-time criminal James Earl Ray. Yet when he was arrested on 8 June 1968 it wasn't in the US but thousands of miles away in London. Almost half a century on, people who met Ray in England have been telling their stories. Entire books have been written about the role James Earl Ray played in the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. Some believe the facts are just as history records: that Ray, working alone, fired a single shot from a high-velocity rifle which killed the civil rights leader as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Others have worked hard to prove Ray was an innocent fall-guy. And there are those who suggest he was a small cog in a wider conspiracy who realised too late he'd been set up to let the main conspirators get away. Almost everyone accepts that shortly after the assassination Ray was heading out of Memphis fast. He later claimed he'd heard on the radio that police were seeking a man of his description travelling in the type of car he was driving - a white Ford Mustang. He had been near the motel shortly before the murder and though entirely innocent of the crime, his later story went, he dumped the Mustang and made his way by train and bus across the Canadian border to Toronto. He arrived on 6 April, two days after Dr King's murder. Eventually Ray acquired a copy of the birth-certificate of Canadian citizen Ramon Sneyd. He used it to obtain a Canadian passport but a clerical error meant it was issued in the name of Ramon Sneya (that mistake would eventually prove Ray's downfall). On 7 May he took a flight from Toronto to Heathrow airport, London. A few hours later he flew on to Lisbon, Portugal. James Earl Ray would later explain he'd wanted to secure a sea-passage from Lisbon to Africa. He planned to be a mercenary and disappear in a country which had no repatriation deal with the US. In Lisbon, Ray persuaded the Canadian embassy to issue a replacement passport with the name corrected to match the Sneyd birth-certificate. But his African idea got nowhere and on 17 May he flew back to London. Ray was now in urgent need of a Plan B. Jane Brookes says she doesn't now recall the moment she first set eyes on "Ramon Sneyd" at the hotel in Penywern Road, Earl's Court where she'd only recently started as receptionist. "In those days people just walked in and asked if there was a room - this was long before computers. The New Earls Court Hotel was never the most salubrious place and almost no one pre-booked. " A room was less than £2 ($3) a night. There didn't seem anything very noteworthy about James Earl Ray. "Except I did spot his southern US accent which was odd as he registered with a Canadian passport. But he just said he'd been living in Canada for some time. "He was tall and thin and quite dark and not especially good-looking. At first I didn't think there was anything very striking about him. He was smartly dressed but he often seemed nervous. He didn't go out very often and I do remember he had difficulty understanding British pre-decimal currency and the underground system. "I was only 21 and not really interested in news: I had no reason to connect him to any great world event. And I'm afraid at the time I didn't even know who Martin Luther King was. " But one day Ray approached Jane Nassau, as she then was, to ask for help making a telephone call to the Daily Telegraph. The Arrest of James Earl Ray was broadcast on Witness, for the BBC World Service, on Monday 6 June - listen to it on BBC iPlayer Radio . "That did seem a bit odd for someone I assumed was just passing through London. But I got him through to the newsroom - and then I listened in, which I know was cheeky of me. "He had a conversation with a journalist and I heard him ask about possible contacts with a view to becoming a mercenary in Africa. So now there did seem something more intriguing about him - although I don't think I really understood what a mercenary was. " The journalist on the Telegraph foreign desk was the late Ian Colvin. Later, in a BBC interview, Colvin said he'd tried to dissuade the caller from becoming a mercenary, telling him "the day is past". But finally Colvin gave him the name of someone in Brussels who might have contacts in the Congo. After a few days Ray moved on from the New Earls Court to another hotel. Later the BBC was to phone Jane to ask her about the man who had now been arrested in connection with the death of Dr King. "I was on TV news and in demand with journalists. I even got into Time magazine and had a couple of offers of marriage because of it. " Some who've studied Ray's movements after the assassination ask how a small-time crook had the funds to survive a month in Canada and then fly to Europe. What is clear is that by the time Jane Brookes knew him he was getting low on cash. On Tuesday 4 June he used a pistol to raid the Trustee Savings Bank at 179 Earls Court Road but made off with only about £100. A week earlier there had been an even less successful raid - on a small jewellery store in Praed Street, Paddington run by Maurice and Billie Isaacs. Their daughter Valerie Goldston later heard the story from her parents. "Paddington Jewellers was an old-style mahogany and glass high street jewellery store. It was only just before the incident that my father had put in a bell as an alarm system. It wasn't sophisticated but it's part of what scared Ray off. "My parents were just closing up when a man walked in and the next thing they knew he was brandishing a handgun. The man, who was clearly American, told them to get in the back room but my father wouldn't comply: I think at first he wasn't sure it was a serious attempt at a hold-up. But my mother decided she wasn't going to let this man harm my father and she ran at him. "My father knocked the gun into the air and then managed to press the button on the floor to set off the newly-installed alarm. So then all hell broke loose and I suspect James Earl Ray was astounded to find two OAPs getting in his way and all this chaos. So he ran off with nothing. " When detectives later told the Isaacs the man might have been the murderer of Martin Luther King Jr, Valerie Goldston says at first they simply didn't believe it. "They thought why on earth would the murderer be in London? But when they were shown pictures of Ray they identified him from the raid. Scotland Yard asked them not to prefer charges, which they could have done: it would have hampered Ray going back to America. So they just didn't speak about him. " Ten years later the family had further unexpected contact with the story. "A committee of the US House of Representatives was taking a look again, to investigate the possibility of a conspiracy. One day when I was serving two big town cars turned up outside the shop without warning. Then these Americans in black suits came in and asked me to lock the door behind them. It was like a scene from a film. They wanted my parents to fly to Washington to give evidence to the government committee. My father refused to go, which seemed to astonish them. " By the date of the failed raid in Paddington (27 May), the FBI - with assistance from the Canadians - knew of the Sneyd alias and that Ray had flown to London. Today, the way in which Ray was finally apprehended at Heathrow appears strangely dependent on chance and one man's attentiveness. But Kenneth Human, the 83-year-old retired immigration officer who stopped Ray, says it's how things were in the pre-digital age. Ray had taken Ian Colvin's advice and bought a ticket on BEA to fly to Brussels. On Saturday 8 June Human was carrying out embarkation formalities at Heathrow Terminal Two, checking passports as passengers headed for their flights. "It was a small area and there was always pressure to keep the queue moving. The slightest delay and you'd find a backlog building almost at once. In fact I was already following Ray's progress - not because he looked suspicious but his height and the way he was dressed in dark clothing made him a good way to follow how the queue was progressing. " "99.9% of passengers would always have their passport ready in their hand when they reached the embarkation desk. But this man didn't: he put down his hand-luggage and pulled rather a large wallet from his inside pocket. He opened it up very precisely and went to the documentation section. He took out a blue Canadian passport and handed it to me - everything he did was very purposeful and there was no hint of nerves. "But I'd caught a glimpse of something you didn't expect: the top corner of another Canadian passport underneath the one in the wallet he handed me, which was in the name of Ramon Sneyd. So without asking his permission I took the second passport out and asked what it was. He explained it was an old cancelled passport and that it had been issued with the name misspelt as Sneya.' Kenneth Human says it still puzzles him why Ray had the earlier passport visible in the wallet. "I think he may have been making some attempt to cover it up but if he'd just put it in his pocket somewhere I would never have seen it and would almost certainly have stamped his passport and waved him through because he had an entry stamp from Portugal. We did have a Suspect Index of people to look out for - but the name Sneyd wasn't in it. " Working alongside Human was a Special Branch officer - but he says normally the police only got involved if the embarkation officer had identified a problem. "But suddenly the Special Branch man said quite dramatically that he was a police officer and wanted to ask the man some questions. So off Ray went with the policeman and I didn't see either of them again. But it was obvious Ray was taking everything in his stride. \He didn't show signs of panic at any point. " Before long Ian Colvin, Jane Nassau, Maurice and Billie Isaacs and Kenneth Human all realised that - however improbably - they had had encounters with the most wanted man in America. Scotland Yard ensured the two armed raids were quietly forgotten about and on 18 July 1968 James Earl Ray was flown back to America under FBI guard. What happened after that is another story and a complex one. Ray initially pleaded guilty to the murder of Dr King but almost at once sought to withdraw that plea. But because he'd admitted to the crime there was no full trial and James Earl Ray spent the rest of his life in jail. He died in 1998 at the age of 70. 100 Feds endorse plan to cede Internet oversight Contact WND San Francisco (AFP) – The US administration on Thursday endorsed a plan to cede its oversight of the gatekeeper of Internet addresses to the broader online community. Commerce Department assistant secretary for communications and information Lawrence Strickling told AFP that the proposal from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meets the criteria set by the US administration. The plan aims to maintain Internet governance under a “multi-stakeholder” model which avoids control of the online ecosystem by any single governmental body.
