Rye Harvest 2021

Further to previous communication, we are contacting you to inform you of our plans for the forthcoming forage rye harvest, the date of which is estimated to start on the 20th June 2021. We hope to give 1 weeks’ notice of the start of harvest operations and update the parish councils on progress throughout.

We have a total of 235 hectares (ha) of rye grown for the EEL site this year. We estimate the total harvest campaign will span 10 days. Forage harvesting capacity (maximum area we expect to harvest in a day) we estimate to be circa 25-30ha per day. There are 17ha to the north of Wighton (1 day of harvest), 36ha to the south of Binham (1.5 days of harvest) and 18ha to the east of Wells-Next-the-Sea (1 day of harvest). The remaining area of rye is being grown in an area that will not affect your villages.

Proposed routes

As per previous harvests, we are proposing one-way routing which will take empty trailers east through Wighton heading to Binham. Full trailers will be heading west from the area to Wighton.

The fields on the coast road to the East of Wells will return through Wells following the A149 to the B1105.

The proposed plan below shows the one-way route system in place for the fields between Wighton And Wells.

Driver Protocol

A 15mph speed limit is proposed for the harvest traffic through villages and towns. Drivers will be obliged to have read and signed their acceptance of our harvest protocols before being allowed to work on behalf of Egmere Energy. As a reminder, drivers are paid by the hour and there is no incentive for them to speed or drive without consideration to fellow road users. All drivers are asked to keep off grass verges whenever possible, (particularly around residential properties) and to pull over to allow traffic to pass, where safe to do so.

We are aware that the narrow road from Egmere to Binham is the Sustrans National cycle route 1. This will be highlighted to all drivers during their induction at the beginning of harvest.

As previously advised, signage will be placed around villages as reminders to EEL harvest drivers of our speed limit and expectations. When we advise of harvest start we will also advise how EEL trailers can be identified.

To date we have not been informed of planned events from any parish council contacts. If there are any events in the area from mid-June to mid-July, please do let us know and we will endeavor to try and avoid those areas.

Harry Runciman is the feedstock manager for the Egmere Energy site and can be contacted on 07392 873 814 or [email protected] . Please could you kindly confirm a point of contact for each parish council to enable efficient communication during harvest.

With thanks and regards,
