The President=s Report to the Board for the period from February through April 2009, will consist of six items:

1. Ivey Health Innovation Centre. On March 26, Federal Industry Minister visited Western to announce a $5 million investment in the Ivey Centre for Health Innovation and Leadership. The new Centre will be a collaboration among the Ivey and Schulich Schools, LHSC, Lawson, and the government and private sector partners to bring together experts from business, health care, and medicine to foster talent and commercialize innovations to benefit health care professions and patients. The Centre was the vision of Dr. of the Schulich School, Dean Carol Stephenson of Ivey, and their colleagues.

2. Alumni Gala Concert. On March 27, the Don Wright Faculty of Music celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a concert at the George Weston Recital Hall of the Centre for the Arts. This gala alumni concert featured performances of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes by the UWO Symphony Orchestra and Choral Groups under the direction of Professor James McKay. It attracted guests from and alumni from the Toronto region for an outstanding musical evening.

3. France Day at Western. Western hosted the French Ambassador to , the Hon. Francois Delattre and a high-ranking academic and scientific delegation on April 1 to

engage in a day of discussions and symposia on the relationship between France and Canada. Ambassador Delattre delivered an address in which he stressed the international commitments of France, the importance of exchanges and interactions, and the French and North American roles with regard to the EU.

4. Dinner for the President. Over 200 people gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto to thank Dr. Davenport for his 15 years as President. Speakers included Board Chair Michele Noble, Paul’s childhood friends Art Murray and Mike Bloomstein, former Provost Greg Moran and Professor Madeline Lennon, former university Presidents Robert Prichard and Martha Piper, and Minister Chris Bentley.

5. Western Law Alumni Dinner. On April 14, Western’s Faculty of Law inaugurated celebrations of its 50th Anniversary with an Alumni Dinner at the London Convention Centre. A centerpiece of the evening was the presentation of the Alumni Award of Distinction to Professor Doug Ferguson (LLB. 81), Director of the Faculty’s Community Legal Services, which is a principal vehicle of outreach, engagement, and service within London and the region. Guest speaker for the evening was Michael Ignatieff (Honorary Doctor of Letters, 2001), Interim Leader of the and Leader of the Official Opposition.

6. Major Faculty Awards and Prizes. In April, the University announced the winners of the annual Hellmuth Prize for Achievement in Research. Each year, one Hellmuth Prize is awarded in the biological and physical sciences and one in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. This year’s winners were Dr. Brian Feagan (Schulich, LHSC, Robarts) for his pioneering work in clinical trials and Dr. John Whalley (Economics) for his work in the areas of the global economy, tax strategy, and development and the environment. We also announced the Distinguished University Professorships for 2009, a designation based on a career of outstanding achievement in scholarship, teaching, and service to the academy. This year’s Distinguished University Professors are Dr. Jack Bend (Schulich), researcher in pharmacology, teacher and administrator; Dr. Michael Strong (Schulich, Robarts), a clinician who is a leading international authority on ALS; and Dr. Richard Vernon (Political Science), a world-renowned authority on political thought, theory, and the responsibilities of citizenship. Each of these distinguished scholars presented a public lecture about their work to the University community.

7. Activities of the President. A summary of my activities during the months of March and April is attached for the information of Board members. Activities scheduled subsequent to April 27th remain tentative and are designated with an asterisk.
