I’m really pleased,” she added. Mollie is joint captain of the successful U16 Netball team, which has recently qualified for the National Finals in Liverpool next month, and is chair of the Student Publicity Team.

GREAT START TO 2015 FOR TOP ACHIEVERS It was an excellent start to the New Year for 13 Penryn College students in the latest Achievement Points Awards. The cohort of pupils were recognised for a great end to 2014, setting the tone for a great 2015. Students are awarded Achievement Points

for anything from excellent classwork and homework, to excellent contributions in class, excellent behaviour or even helping others. The top performing students enjoyed refreshments provided by the college in the Inspiration Agency, before a formal certificate presentation and a chance for photos. Penryn College pupil Charlie Jones was award- ed the ‘Child of Courage’ award at the recent West Briton Community Awards and dinner. Charlie (pictured), aged 12, received his award for showing exceptional bravery. The ceremony took place in front of an audi- ence of over 100 people at the Falmouth Hotel and Charlie said he enjoyed the experience despite it being a nervous one! “There were lots of people there, so it was a bit scary,” said Charlie. “I was told when I was invit- ed that we had to dress smartly for the evening, as it was quite a big deal. It was great to go up and collect the award and have my family there,” he added. PENRYN STATION MURAL ART PROJECT OPENS

Penryn College students have been at the heart of helping design an eye catching town mural outside of Penryn Station. 20 year nine students, along with pupils in years four and

five at Penryn Junior helped create the Mural, which was initially designed by University students. The design was initial- ly supposed to be 3D, but Mrs Stokes and Mr Ash pose for a picture with Mayor of Penryn Gill Grant next to the Mural Penryn college students helped to design planners eventually settled on and create a flat surface. The Mural is 40ft long and is a timeline featuring key moments and iconic build- ings from Penryn’s history, spanning the whole wall directly outside the town train station. Mayor of Penryn, Gill Grant, was delighted with the work the students had put in. “I am delighted that so many of the key moments and iconic buildings of Penryn’s history have been included,” she said. Arts Award Co-Ordinator Mrs Stokes was also very pleased. “The students have worked very hard on this and it looks great.” said Mrs Stokes. “It’s a constant reminder of the hard work they have put in, when they see it on the way to and from school everyday,” she added.

Penryn College’s U16 Netball team have made history by becoming the school’s first ever team to qualify for the National Netball finals, held in Liverpool next month. The girls added the South West title to their County crown in Bournemouth and will look to make it a clean sweep on March 14th.

There was another first as the U14 team had also qualified, meaning they joined their U16 school mates for the trip after qualifying as runners up from their county competition. The U14s competed well on the day, win- ning two of their group matches, but unfortunately didn’t make it through. It was a fine achievement by the girls to reach the finals and will have been a good experience for future competi- tions.

It was a big day for the U16 team though, who have been crowned county champions on the last five occasions but had never progressed past this stage. They went into the tournament as one of the favourites and would have been eager to finally make it to the National finals. The girls played six matches in their group against Taunton School, Marlborough College, Clifton College, West Buckland and Dean Close, all of whom were beaten by the Penryn team, whilst they drew with Talbot Heath, meaning that they qualified for the knockout stages.

Qualifying as group winners, the girls would face host school Bournemouth in the semi-finals. It was a tense affair and went to extra time, with the Penryn girls opponents roared on by the home crowd. Penryn held firm though and progressed to the final. The final promised to be a tough assignment against another much fancied team, in the shape of Millfield School. The girls though produced their best performance of the day to win 7-4 as they were crowned South West Champions and progressed to the National Finals.

Coach on the day and teacher at Penryn College, Angie Walker, was delighted with the girls’ attitude and their dis- plays on the day. “It’s an amazing achievement from both team to make it here, so for one to win it, is fantastic for the school”, said Mrs Walker. “The girls positivity and incredible teamwork got them here and was a massive factor in getting them the win, as well as some excellent Netball being played”, she added. The team travel to Liverpool on Saturday March 14th to compete for the National title.

Alumni - EX SPORTS STARS MAKE DEBUTS

Two ex Penryn sports stars have recently been recognised for their sporting achievements, mak- ing their debuts at the top level. Liam Prynn (left) made his senior debut for Torquay United in their recent 0-0 away draw with Wrexham in the fifth tier of English Football. Liam, 17, who left Penryn College in 2013, was originally selected for Premiership team Aston Villa’s be- fore deciding on a move closer to home, which has paid dividends in making his first senior appearance at such a young age. Ben Jordan (in action right) was recently selected by England Rugby’s deaf team following a trial and has already started his first game, becoming a capped deaf International in the process. Ben, 24, is partially deaf in one ear and was selected following a trial in London. He won his first cap for England against Wales at the famous Cardiff Arms Park in an 18-5 defeat. Ben, who left Penryn College in 2007, has been very successful since leaving school, and cur- rently owns and runs his own business. Young people across Cornwall will be getting the chance to vote for who should represent them in the Youth Parliament. Polls will be open for a week to give school and college students the chance to select who they would like selected as Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs). There will be three MYPs for Cornwall – one for West Cornwall, one for Mid Cornwall and one for North and East Cornwall. Of the 15 nominees from schools all around Cornwall, including; Treviglas Community Col- lege, Cornwall College, , Helston Community College, and , four of the nominees were from Penryn College. The four in question are Ki Loveday-Edwards, Mollie Martin, Abigail Lilly and Charlie Oliver . Here’s what they all had to say about the role: Ki : Everyone is special, but sometimes “special” can be used to mean “different in a bad way”. I have been “out” as gay for about three years and in that time I have been the subject of personal abuse. I have also been the person that other young people (not always gay) have come to talk to about problems. I am a good listener and I like to help and to solve problems if I can. I am passionate about people being treated fairly and sensitively, and about young people, no matter who they are, being offered the same chances to be happy in life, in work, play, and access to activities, creative outlets and culture. Top two priorities: Acceptance of diversity and access to culture/activities.

Mollie : I’m excited about having the opportunity to debate and discuss issues that are relevant to young people, like me. For example, this week in Vocational Skills I chaired a debate; ’Are morbidly obese people disabled?’ It was very interesting (and at times challenging) listening to people’s differing opinions whilst trying to conclude in a fair way. I think everyone should have their say and they often don’t. One of my main aca- demic passions is ethics. I love the debate and being able to challenge and discuss conflicting opinions. My role on the School Student Council involves speaking publicly, justifying my opinion and perhaps most importantly, seeking to find a solution that tries to accommodate all – not always easy! Top two priorities: More opportunities for talented young athletes, find ways to inspire young people. Abigail : I am involved with many community projects and clubs, and have been for several years. I have helped with elderly people’s events, and also younger people (including adolescents). This would be good for MYP because I will know lots of different viewpoints of people. I have a good rapport with adults and chil- dren alike, therefore I feel comfortable with talking to anybody about anything. I have great confidence which is shown through presenting many assemblies at my school, and being a Guard Commander in Sea Cadets. I am also the chairman of my school’s student council, which means I can lead meetings, meet with new people and I am a vital link to teachers and pupils. I get on with most people and feel that I will be a great addition to MYP. Top two priorities: Having the best education possible, getting young people active and outside.

Charlie : I feel that I can voice the opinions of the young people in Cornwall. I also intend to speak using my own experience of living in Cornwall, because I have lived half of my life in Cornwall, I am able to compare the county to living in others. I believe that I am able to articulate and I am not afraid of relaying ideas and giving feedback. I am also a member of the student council in my school. I am open, willing and able to listen. I have also mentored bronze PLTS leaders as part of my silver leadership award, so I have worked with other people successfully in achieving a goal. Top two priorities: Good work prospects for young people, a greater focus on poverty riddled areas.

We’re used to hearing all about the adventures of Benno Marstaller in the Pen- nant, but two other keen young sailors are hot on his heels. Jasmine Laity , 14, and Otis Chetwynd-Woods , 12, are also beginning to make a name for them- selves. The pair train together, along with Benno at Restronguet Sailing Club in Mylor on weekends come rain or shine, calm or rough and give up a lot of their time to prepare for competitions in foreign countries. The three regularly com- pete in France, Italy and Morocco among other countries, travelling the world

doing what they love. The trio are each in different categories, meaning their type of training and schedules are different. Otis is in the zone squad, with Jas- mine in the Optimist sailors’ group and Benno the Laser group, each of those boats is progressively bigger than the last. “We train every weekend, no matter what the weather is like and compete every other week,” says Jasmine. “You have to be very dedicated, but you get to compete worldwide and we’re very lucky to be able to do what we do,” she added.
