Denise Flowers, Exodus Traveller When Denise Flowers decided to celebrate her birthday with a winter snowshoeing holiday, she contacted YOUR WORDS a dozen friends to see whether they fancied joining her. With so many people of varying abilities signing up for her special adventure, and with only half term off in which to travel, Denise had the mammoth task of finding something that would suit everyone. “The pictures of the Transylvania Winter Walk & Snowshoe trip in the Exodus brochure really captured my imagination, but it wasn’t running on the week we wanted to go. I just called Exodus to see whether there was anything they could do and our tailormade adventure started to fall into place from there. The group that I went with were friends that I’d met on various other holidays, and so many of them hadn’t met one another before so that was really nice. Welcome to Alpenwelt Karwendel! These two mountain bikers have had a good laugh. They are returning from a break at Vereiner Alm. In the deep south of Germany, at the border with Austria, a pleasant valley with undula- ting meadows, lakes and streams extends between rocky peaks, forested mountain flanks and hills. Alpenwelt Karwendel with the three Upper Bavarian municipalities of Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau is surrounded by four mountain massifs: the Karwendel mountains and the Soiern group to the East, the Ester mountains to the North and the Wetterstein mountains to the South-West. Because of this, the region is the ideal starting point for all kinds of mountain bike and cycling tours. If you like to take it easy, you can linger in the valley between the flower meadows, lakes and the expansive river landscape of the Isar with its shingle and gravel banks. If you prefer the forested foothills, explore the Ester mountains and the Soiern group with their shady forest roads and single trails.

  • By David Burnett
Bob Marley: Soul Rebel — by David Burnett Bob Marley: Soul Rebel On assignment in Jamaica for Time magazine in 1976, David Gallery Images Burnett photographed Bob Marley at his Tuff Gong home in Kingston, Jamaica, and then for Rolling Stone on the start of the seminal 1977 Exodus tour. Capturing the legendary musician at an exceptional moment in time, Burnett’s work intersects with both the zenith of Marley’s career and the traumatic upheaval of his flight from Jamaica after an attempt on his life. Although only a few of Burnett’s images of Marley were originally published, in the years after Marley’s death several of the photographs have become iconic, memorializing Marley on dorm rooms walls and t-shirts across the globe. This exhibition and accompanying book present the full extent of Burnett’s extraordinarily intimate images of the reggae legend. David Burnett, a veteran photojournalist, was the last photographer to cover the Vietnam War for Life magazine. He has worked in over 80 countries, documenting the coup in Chile, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the revolution in Iran, and the US military intervention in Haiti. A co-founder with Robert Pledge of Contact Press Images, Burnett is the winner of the most prestigious awards in photography. He has photographed every American president since JFK and every summer Olympic Games since 1984. He is a regular contributor to Time magazine.
