BEING VEGAN Founder of Social Media Blog: IN VIRGINIA @vegansofvirginia By Alicia Sokolovsky

Being vegan doesn’t have to be hard, it shouldn’t discourage you, and it most certainly shouldn’t be overwhelming. Even though the journey can be all of these things- there are many resources to help you on the road to being vegan. I started my vegan blog- @vegansofvirginia because I know how hard it is to start this journey, how hard it is to find options, and how hard it can be to figure out new recipes. I wanted others to feel inspired, and want to be on this journey with a positive mind and outlook. Even if you aren’t fully vegan, I still want to encourage others to try vegan options. I post my recipes, places to eat in Hamptons Roads, and all throughout Virginia. There are so many amazing places that are fully vegan or even offer vegan options that people need to know about! I love seeing others tag in their recipes or new places because it shows me that I am doing something amazing for others and my community. The 757 vegan community is amazing! The events, the information, and the encouragement is beyond beautiful. It feels so good to give back and help others- that’s all I have ever wanted to do in my life. I started my vegan journey three and a half years ago and I have felt so amazing since. It’s been one year since I opened up and started to help others be confident in their own vegan journey. I love to cook, and to show others what I cook, and how to cook it. I’m all about easy vegan recipes because it doesn’t have to be hard or challenging.

I always want people to remember to go at their own pace. Everyone’s journey is different and that is totally okay! Don’t ever be too hard on yourself, because you are doing so much better than you think. Being vegan shouldn’t scare anyone, only challenge them to go outside their comfort zone more. I am beyond thankful for everyone who has supported me and I can’t wait to see where my vegan journey takes me. SMITHFIELD PIG SAVE

Written by Julia Novak

Smithfield Pig Save is a chapter of the Save Movement that bears witness as farmed animals are en route to slaughter. We organize regular vigils and rallies at Smithfield Foods slaughterhouse in Smithfield, VA. Our events are documented with photography and video footage which is then shared across social media. Smithfield Pig Save is focused on raising awareness about the suffering of farmed animals and building a grassroots animal justice movement.

Have you ever seen animals on a slaughter truck? You can look away or you can come close and try to help. Bearing witness is being present in the face of injustice and intervening. The animals want you to be present to tell their stories and to fight for animal liberation.

Animal vigils bring you face to face with the animals and make you see them for the individuals they are. The animal exploitation industry sees animals as commodities; by bearing witness and looking an animal in the eyes you can see their unique soul. We use a non-violent, love-based approach to community organizing as a means of being the change we want to see in the world. The approach is inclusive and welcoming to all. Through our slaughter-free city campaigns, we can shut down animal farms and slaughterhouses and transition them towards plant-based food companies. We also provide assistance for local vegan run animal Sanctuaries by volunteering our time to volunteer with physical tasks or helping to raise funds online through donation drives.

"When the suffering of another creature causes you to feel pain, do not submit to the initial desire to flee from the suffering one, but on the contrary, come closer, as close as you can to him who suffers, and try to help him." - LEO TOLSTOY. We all have a duty to bear witness. As painful as it may seem to initiate or to join animal vigils at slaughterhouses, it is actually empowering when done as a group. 757 VEGAN MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT

by Karen Elizabeth Davis

One day I received a call from the resident of an apartment building outside Washington, DC, saying that a rooster was loose in the complex and was being chased by children. After two weeks of trying, she managed to lure the rooster into the laundry room and called me to come get him. Expecting to find a cowering and emaciated creature needing to be carefully lifted out of a corner, I discovered instead a bright-eyed perky, chatty little fellow with glossy black feathers. I drove him to our sanctuary and set him outside with the flock, which at the time included our large white rooster Henry, and our feisty bantam rooster, Bantu, who loved nothing better than sitting in the breeze under the trees with his two favorite large brown hens, Nadia and Nadine.

Continue on next page... Two years after coming to live with us, Jules developed a respiratory infection that left him weak and vulnerable. Following treatment, he returned to the chickenyard only to find himself supplanted by Glippie, with whom he had used to be cordial, but was now dueling, and he didn’t have the heart or strength for it. His exuberance ebbed out of him and he became sad; there is no other word for the total condition of mournfulness he showed. His voice, which had always been cheerful, changed to moaning tones of woe. He banished himself to the outer edges of the chickenyard where he paced up and down, bawling so loudly I could hear him crying from inside the house. I brought him in with me and sought to comfort my beloved bird, who showed by his whole demeanor that knew he was dying and was hurt through and through by what he had become. Jules developed an abdominal tumor. One morning our veterinarian placed him gently on the floor of his office after a final and futile overnight stay. Jules looked up at me from the floor and let out a low groan of “ooooohh” so broken that it pierced me through. I am pierced by it now, remembering the sorrow expressed by this dear sweet creature, “Gentleman Jules,” who had loved his life and his hens and was leaving it all behind.

In today’s world, most roosters never see a hen. They never meet their mother or their sisters. Most roosters are ground up alive, electrocuted and suffocated to death in garbage bags as soon as they struggle out of their shells, or else they are dumped into sheds, separate from the females imprisoned in other sheds, to be raised for slaughter as six-week-old babies.

Jules was sweet-natured, warm and affectionate. He was a natural leader, and the hens loved him. Our dusky brown hen Petal, whom we’d adopted from another sanctuary, was devoted to Jules. Petal had gnarly toes, which didn’t stop her from whisking away from anyone she didn’t want to come near her; otherwise she sat still watching everything, especially Jules. Petal never made a sound; she didn’t cluck like most hens - except when Jules left her side a little too long. Then all of a sudden, the silent and immobile hen with the watchful eye let out a raucous SQUAWK, SQUAWK, SQUAWK, that didn’t stop until Jules lifted his head up from whatever he was doing, and muttering to himself, ran over to comfort his friend. The Season of Compassion by Sierra Reese

Happy Holidays, Amazing People! It’s Sierra, your Food Justice Coordinator. This year, our holiday celebrations will look much different from previous gatherings. Some may be adopting new traditions, while others modify the old. Nevertheless, we are all making the best of living in these unprecedented times.

This holiday season, the number of households unable to enjoy a satisfying, filling meal surrounded by those they love have dramatically increased, which is an injustice.

Where food justice is present, no belly goes empty and everyone has access to affordable, healthy and culturally relevant foods. The foods we eat and products we use, when we exercise food justice, are sustainable, fair trade and cruelty-free. Community gardens increase access to fresh produce, knowledge of healthy lifestyle practices and increased community wellness.

At the core of food justice is compassion, compassion for oneself, others, animals and the environment. Extend some compassion to yourself, others and enjoy your holidays! Check out our winter magazine sponsors!

Reach out to Toccora Perry at: 757-270-0560 or [email protected] A virtual Food Empowerment Project Halloween event on the cruelty hidden by the chocolate industry further prompted me to ensure that I only bought chocolate that is listed as recommended on the Food Empowerment Project’s Chocolate List (application available via Google Play). I have been doing this as diligently as I could for a couple of years, but food justice is one of my passions and I could not knowingly buy certain brands of vegan chocolate treats any longer. As a lover of chocolate for years, I was appalled to learn that some brands use cacao from countries known to use child slave labor to harvest the cacao used in their chocolates.

This article will highlight the delicious vegan ethical chocolate I recently bought from Lagusta’s Luscious and other brands I have tried that are recommended by the Food Empowerment Project’s Chocolate List. I'll also list common brands that are not recommended.

Lagusta’s Luscious is a vegan company in New Paltz, New York that sells a wide variety of chocolate treats and vegan cookies (including vegan French-style macarons!). I bought a 15-piece variety chocolate box, chocolate honeycombs (made with maple syrup instead of honey), cashew yuzu creams, and a six- piece variety pack of macarons. If you like surprises, you will love this company. Even if you do not like surprises, you are guaranteed to get a delectable variety of caramels, bonbons, and chocolate hearts in your variety box. How the variety boxes work is that it is a variety of what is freshly available in the store the day that your products are being shipped. I did not receive any duplicates and the flavors were very unique. My favorites were the tahini meltaway, strawberry balsamic caramel, peppermint patty, and the maple white chocolate heart. Vegan macarons can be hard to find and pricey due to the high cost of the ingredients and the intricate methodology involved in making them. I felt these were fairly priced for a handmade boutique macaron ($3 each) and if you are new to macarons they even include directions on the box and inserts that explain the best way to enjoy them. I received pistachio, black currant, and blueberry poppyseed. I enjoyed them all, but the pistachio was my favorite with black currant being a close second. The chocolate honeycomb was a unique New York local treat and reminded me of chocolate-covered toffee. The cashew yuzu creams were my absolute favorite, and I am glad I bought a nine-piece box. It has a delightful, sweet neutral cream that bursts with a sharp citrus bite to cut the richness of the delectable dark chocolate. This company’s flavors change all the time and they even have seasonal fall options available now with winter ones also being available soon. I am eyeing the Hazelnut Sugar Plum Caramel Bar! There is a multitude of other ethical vegan chocolate companies that I have tried. These include: Alter Eco (their dark chocolate truffles are really great), Amy’s (not all their products are vegan, check the label, I like the Dreamy and Minty Bars), Askinosie Chocolate (my mother bought me the absolutely amazing raspberry American Spoon CollaBARation bar), Coracao Confections (California based and they have some interesting bars and drink mixes, I really liked the almond bar), Equal Exchange (I won a bunch of their 55% cacao mini bars at the event mentioned at the beginning of the article, and they are an absolutely divine, creamy milk style chocolate with no vegan milk and I highly recommend them!), Hu Chocolate (my favorite is the cashew butter with raspberry jam), JJ’s Sweets (makers of delectable chocolate covered coconut caramel and other caramel treats, I like the chocolate covered caramel bites), Justin’s (they make yummy chocolate cups and other chocolate treats, I like the cashew butter dark chocolate cups), Nocciolata Dairy Free (delicious vegan Nutella style spread, be careful as there is a version that contains dairy), Raaka Virgin Chocolate (unique as it is unroasted, it is not my personal favorite, but I did like their maple bar), and Sjaak’s (based in California and maker of the amazing caramel chocolate bars the Food Empowerment Project sells at events that they attend). Out of this extensive list, my favorites are Askinosie, Equal Exchange, Hu Chocolate, and Sjaak’s. In the Hampton Roads area, I recommend Kroger, Organic Food Depot, Wegman’s, and Whole Foods to find brands such as Amy’s, Equal Exchange, Hu Chocolate, JJ’s Sweets, Justin’s, and Nocciolata. The others are boutique brands and are best found online.

Some common grocery store brands, that I am familiar with, that are not recommended due to the company not responding (Food Empowerment Project only asks the country of origin of their chocolate) or the company responded with a county that is known to use child slave labor include: ALDI, Endangered Species, free2b, Go Max Go, Lily’s, No Whey! Chocolates, and Trader Joe’s.

The Chocolate List application also lists companies that do not necessarily produce chocolate. Not all companies on the list are vegan, but if they are on the list they make at least one vegan product. Consumer education is important and I encourage you to research the companies you like, download the application, and you can even tweet or post to Facebook about the companies that are on the recommended list, and explain to companies that are not recommended why you will not be buying their products. Ethical vegan chocolate is a great gift for yourself or the chocolate lovers in your life. Enjoy the wide range of delicious vegan ethical chocolate!
