m 1 8 e n d 1 2 Lancaster fro 74 to the of 7 9 , and of Halton Wills

1 2 . 1 8 1 2 to 7 9 The present volume continues the li st down to , the latest date allowed for present publication . The Wills of the fi ve Western Deaneries of the Archdeaconry of Rich mond ceased to be proved at Lancaster in 1 85 7 (see & I . & & & . Introductions to Vols , II I , and I I )

Th e Wills in this volume are at Lancaster, where all the Lancashire Wills proved in the Archdeaconry of Rich mond since

c m 1 74 8 are deposited . Th e Ri h ond Wills previous to that

1 8 m . date were , in 74 , oved to Somerset House Upon a recent

c a c c appli ation by the Yorkshire Arch eologi al So iety , the Wills m relating to the Eastern Rich ond Deaneries of Borough bridge , m ’ Catterick , and Rich ond were transferred from Somerset House to the District Probate Registry at York . At the time o f the application it was suggested that this So ciety should apply for

c the transfer, to Lan aster, of the Lancashire portion of the

m m c Rich ond Wills at So erset House , but th e Coun il declined to do so as it was considered that the docu ments were more c onveniently accessible in London (where there is a skilled body

c o f professional searchers and trans ribers) than at Lan caster . In the early part of the present year the Hon orary Secretary was informed that it was proposed to remove the Lancashire portion of the Richmond Wills to York (where the Yorkshire portion had already gone) , and upon inquiry at th e Principal Probate Registry it was found that the removal to York of the remaining

Richmond Wills had been authorised but not yet carried out . Stron g protests were at once made by this Society and other

Arch aeological Societies , to th e President of the Probate Division I n troductio n and also to the Royal Com missioners now sitting to inquire

c e c into the ustody and preservation of public r ords , and it is satisfactory to be able to state that in consequence of these protests it was decided in February last that the Richmond

Wills , other than those of th e Yorkshire Deaneries , should remain at Somerset House . This volume also includes a list of the Wills proved within the Peculiar of the Manor of Halton for the same period . They

R U L E S

1 . EC C That the Society shall be called the R ORD SO I ETY, and shall have for its object the transcribing and publishi ng of Original n Docu ments relating to the Counties of Lancaster a d Chester . ff 2 . That the a airs of the Society shall be governed by a Council O f m consisting of a President and twelve Members , the former who a n nual Shall be ly elected by the Council .

3 . That three M embers of the Council shall form a quoru m .

4 . That the subscription of Members of the Society shall be

1 1 . a £ , s per annum , which sh ll entitle them to the publications for the year ; but any Member whose subscription shall be two years i n arrear shall thereupon be removed from the Society, and Shall not

- be re admitted until all arrears have been paid . The number of

Members is li mited to 3 5 0 .

5 . That the subscriptions shall be due in advance on the 3 o th of June in each year, and that no work Shall be issued to any

Member whose subscription is in arrear. h 6 . That an Annual Meeting of the Society S all be held in the month of October, of which due notice Shall be sent to all the

Members . At this meeting a Report of the work of the Society , with a Statement of the Income and Expenditure , Shall be presented . m These shall be annually published , together with a List of Me bers and the Rules of th e Society .

. so 7 That long as the funds of the Society permit, two volumes at least shall be issued to the Members in each year .

8 . That no copies of the publications O f the Society Shall be - c fi sold to non members , ex ept at an increased price to be xed by the

Council .

9 . That no paymen t Shall be made to any person for editing any work for the Society , but that the Editor of each Volume shall be entitled to twenty copies of the work so edited by him . ’ 1 0 . That the Treasurer s Accounts shall be audited by two S Members of the Society , who hall be elected at the Annual

Meeting .

transcripts from the Public Records . In return several of the ” Lists and Indexes and Calen dars published by the Record Office have been receiv e d . The Honorary Secretary gave evidence on Cheshire Records before th e Royal Com mission on Public Records in support of the contention tha t th e records of Flin tshire were part of the Cheshire c fi nd re ords , and it is satisfactory to that the Commissioners agree
