AROUND THE HORN News & Notes from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum September Edition Sept. 17, 2015 volume 22, issue 8 FRICK AWARD BALLOT VOTING UNDER WAY The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford C. Frick Award is presented annually since 1978 by the Museum for excellence in baseball broadcasting…Annual winners are announced as part of the Baseball Winter Meetings each year, while awardees are presented with their honor the following summer during Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown, New York…Following changes to the voting regulations implemented by the Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors in the summer of 2013, the selection process reflects an era-committee system where eligible candidates are grouped together by years of most significant contributions of their broadcasting careers… The totality of each candidate’s career will be considered, though the era in which the broadcaster is deemed to have had the most significant impact will be determined by a Hall of Fame research team…The three cycles reflect eras of major transformations in broadcasting and media: The “Broadcasting Dawn Era” – to be voted on this fall, announced in December at the Winter Meetings and presented at the Hall of Fame Awards Presentation in 2016 – will consider candidates who contributed to the early days of baseball broadcasting, from its origins through the early-1950s.

Yes, it’s that time of year again and I really can’t believe how we got here so quickly. I also can’t believe that this is the 27th issue of the Baseball in Wartime Newsletter. It was in September 2007 that I put together the first two- page edition of this newsletter as a way of sharing information that did generally fit within the scope of the Baseball in Wartime website. Things have certainly grown since those humble beginnings and in October I launched the Baseball in Wartime Blog. The issue I am now pondering over is whether there is still a need for the newsletter in light of the existence of the blog? Do the newsletter and blog serve the same purpose? The advantage of the blog is that it is updated daily, providing you with a constant update on WWII baseball news together with regular features. The newsletter on the other hand, is a monthly release but has the advantage of being printable and is delivered right to your email inbox. I guess, at this stage, I’m looking for feedback. If I get enough positive response for the newsletter then I’ll gladly keep producing it on a monthly basis. If, however, you would rather access this type of information via the blog, then I’ll phase out the newsletter over the next few months.

    Harvest of sunshine Alison Morris Lifestyles Editor unflowers are not a typical crop growing in Western Oklahoma but Mark and Vonda Graf of Corn are on their second year of growing and harvesting sunflowers. S Graf said they plant the sunflowers around the first of May depending on soil temperatures and they are ready to harvest towards the end of August or beginning of September. When they are ready to harvest the flowers will be black and dry. Graf uses an ‘all crop head’ on his combine to harvest the flowers. He said the head sandwiches the flowers in-between a set of belts before cutting the flowers. This allows him to capture almost every flower head. Graf then stores the sunflowers in bins until he can deliver them to Jettco Seed in Binger to be processed. The sunflowers Graf plants are not the confectionary ones that are harvested for their seeds. His flowers are about half the size and are used for bird seed or crushing for sunflower oil. Graf said this is a relatively low maintenance crop. As long as they get plenty of rain they do well. “They look lovely, they are a good cash crop in comparison to wheat right now,” said Graf. “Right now they are at the peak of their beauty and have drawn lots of spectators.” WFRC plans can sculpture competition Roxane Paone Mark Graf, of Corn, said his sunflower fields are at the peak time for beauty. Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally.
