TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday in the second of four meetings between the teams this season. Washington holds a 11-6-0-2 record all-time at Nationwide Arena and a 23-9-1-4 record all time against Columbus.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Streaking Ovi - Alex Ovechkin has recorded a point in 10 straight games (9g, 5a), the longest streak by a Capital this season. That marks the 38th time in franchise history a player has recorded a point in 10 straight games, the first point streak that long since Nicklas Backstrom's 10 game point streak in the 2016-17 season (Jan. 3 through Jan. 23, 10 games, 17 points) and it marks the sixth time in his career Ovechkin has recorded a point in at least 10 straight games. Ovechkin's personal best point streak was 13 games (Dec. 30, 2006 through Feb. 1, 2007, 20 points) and the Capitals' franchise record for most consecutive games with a point is 17, twice accomplished by Mike Gartner (Feb. 25, 1981 through April 2, 1981: 24 points; Oct. 11, 1984 through Nov. 21, 1984: 28 points). On Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, Ovechkin recorded four shots and passed the 5,000 shot mark, becoming the ninth player in NHL history to record 5,000 shots. He reached the milestone in 1,031 games, 184 fewer games than Marcel Dionne, who previously held the record for the fastest player to reach 5,000 career shots. Ovechkin is the only player that ranks in the top 40 on the NHL's all- time shots list that has played fewer than 1,050 career games. With a 4.85 shots per game average, Ovechkin leads the NHL in shots since 1994-95, 10 seasons before Ovechkin made his NHL debut. Ovechkin has led the NHL in shots in 11 of his 13 full seasons in the NHL. Ovechkin's 21 goals this season lead the Capitals and are tied for first in the NHL through games played Dec. 6. Ovechkin now sits 13 goals shy of passing Dave Andreychuk (640) for 14th on the NHL's all-time goals list. Since the 2005-06 season, Ovechkin's 628 goals are 202 more than the next highest goal scorer (Pittsburgh's : 426) and 234 more than the third highest scorer (Minnesota's Eric Staal: 394). Ovechkin has recorded a point in all 16 of the Capitals' wins this season, the only player on the roster to record a point in every win.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Flying V - Jakub Vrana scored a goal on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, marking his third goal in his last two games. Vrana's nine goals in 28 games this season are tied for third most on the Capitals and his five first-period goals lead the team. The Capitals have scored the first goal of the game 11 times this season, with Vrana scoring Washington's first goal six times and the game's opening goal three times (Oct. 27 at Calgary, Nov. 5 vs. Edmonton, Nov. 14 at Winnipeg), leading the Capitals in both respective categories, and tallying the primary assist on one other opening-game goal (Oct. 22 at Vancouver). All nine of Vrana's goals this season have come at even strength, which ranks second on the Capitals (Alex Ovechkin: 13 goals at even strength). Vrana has been on the ice for 23 goals at five-on-five this season and just 13 goals against, tied for the second-best differential on the team (Carlson: +16, Backstrom: +10, Kempny: +10). Vrana's nine goals rank second in the NHL among Czech-born players.

Go Conno – Brett Connolly recorded an assist on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, his third straight game with an assist (4a) and his 13th of the season, three shy of his career high (2015-16: 16 assists). This season, Connolly's 13 assists are tied for fourth on the Capitals. Additionally, Connolly, who has 17 points this season (4g, 13a), ranks first among the Capitals in points per 60 minutes of play at five-on-five (2.81 points per 60) among players with at least 13 games played. Since joining the Capitals in the 2016-17 season, Connolly is the only player in the NHL that has accumulated at least 67 points (34g, 33a) and has averaged less than 13 minutes a game (Connolly: 11:50 TOI per game).

Nisky Business - Matt Niskanen scored on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, his second straight game with a point (1g, 2a). Thursday was Niskanen's 32nd birthday and he became the 30th player in franchise history to score on his birthday, the first time a Cap scored on their birthday since John Carlson scored on his 25th birthday (Jan. 10, 2015) and the first time Niskanen had ever scored a goal on his birthday. Additionally, Niskanen led the Capitals in points (1g, 1a) and hits (4). This season, Niskanen has 14 points (4g, 10a) in 28 games, on pace to surpass his highest total since joining the Capitals in the 2014-15 season (2016-17: 5g, 34a) and four goals shy of passing his highest goal total since joining the Capitals (2017-18: seven goals).

Last We Met - The Capitals meet the Blue Jackets for the first time at Nationwide Arena since defeating Columbus in the 2018 Eastern Conference quarterfinals in six games to advance to the second round en-route to winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Washington overcame a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series for just the second time in franchise history. The Capitals also became the first team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after suffering overtime losses in Games 1 and 2 at home. In the regular season, Capitals have earned a point in 12 of their last 15 games against the Blue Jackets (10-3-2) and in 21 of their last 27 games against Columbus (17-6-4).

That Time of the Year - Over the last four seasons, the Capitals are 38-11-9 in the month of December. That's the most wins and points (85) by any team in the NHL during that span. Additionally, the Capitals' 178 goals for are the second most and their 126 goals allowed are the least during that time frame. In his career during the month of December, Braden Holtby 32-11-8 with a 2.40 goals against average and a .922 save percentage, his fourth-lowest goals against average and his third highest save percentage for any month (April: 2.11 goals against average and .932 save percentage, March: 2.32 goals against average, November: 2.38 goals against average and .923 save percentage).

The Capitals selected Geisser in the fourth round, 120th overall, in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Geisser also represented Switzerland in the 2018 World Junior Championship, skating in five games. Geisser was named a top-three player on Switzerland during the tournament. Geisser has participated in 13 games with Hershey this season. Alexeyev was selected with the Capitals' first round pick, 31st overall, in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Should Alexeyev make the final roster, it would mark the first time Alexeyev has represented Russia at the World Junior Championship. In 2016, Alexeyev represented Russia at the U-18 World Junior Championship, recording two assists in five games.

Making the Most of His Time - Travis Boyd recorded an assist on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes, his sixth assist in 12 games. Among Capitals with at least 12 games played this season, Boyd leads the team in points per 60 minutes of five-on-five play (3.29), primary assists (2.74) and points (3.29). Boyd's 2.74 primary assists per 60 minutes of five-on-five play rank second in the NHL among players with at least 12 games played (Toronto's Mitch Marner: 2.74 primary assists per 60 minutes of five-on-five play).
