Introduction Quoting the noble Qur’ān in Swahili tenḏi (sg., utenḏi) narrative poems is a common practice for Swahili scribes, albeit one that has rarely been considered in the study of Swahili poetry and its manuscript produc- tion.2 A considerable number of poems transmitted in Arabic-script * I would like to thank Alessandro Gori, Antonella Brita, and Clarissa Vierke for their helpful and stimulating suggestions, comments, and corrections on the first draft of this manuscript. I am grateful to Kristen de Joseph and Valen- tina Serelli for proofreading the article and checking some of its translitera- tions, respectively. 1 Kresse "##$, %#$. 2 The term, which in Northern Swahili dialects is utenḏi (pl. tenḏi), is derived from the verb kutenda ‘to do, to act, to make.’ The literal meaning is thus anal- ogous to the French chanson de gestes, a form that it also resembles in length (see Allen %&$% and Gerard %&$$). Prosodically, the utenḏi is a metrical and rhymed verse form. The noun utenḏi has a double meaning: it indicates both the verse form composed in metre (Swahili bahari, from the Arabic baḥr, pl. buḥūr) as well the specific compositions in this form. As meticulously described by Vierke, ‘The utenḏi is rhythmically divided into stanzas (beiti, sg. ubeiti) of '( syllables (mizani) each. The stanzas are the biggest independent, prosodically Annachiara Raia manuscripts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries feature Qur’ānic verses (Arabic āya; plural āyāt) quoted between their stanzas (Swahili ubeti; pl. beti). Such works include the moral fables Utenḏi wa Ngamia na Paa (‘The Poem of the Camel and the Gazelle’),3 Utenḏi wa Kadhi na Haramii (‘The Poem of the Lawyer and the Thief’)4 and Kisat Mudhari (‘The Poem from Mudhari’);5 epic poems like the Utenḏi wa Badr (‘The Poem of the Battle of Badr’)6 and the Utenḏi wa Qatirifu (‘The poem of Ghitrif’);7 tenḏi about the prophets, such as Ayubu (‘Job’),8 the Kisa cha Sayyidna Isa (‘Our Lord Jesus’; Dammann %&)#), and the Kisa cha Yusufu (‘Joseph’);9 and didactic poems like the Utenḏi wa Siraji (‘The Poem of the Lantern’).10 In terms of sheer quantity, the presence of Qur’ānic verses in the manuscripts of Swahili utenḏi poems varies significantly. Their abun- dance or paucity in a poem may be due to the author or scribe’s perso- nal style, as well as careful selection based on the content of the utenḏi (be it a fable like the Ngamia na Paa, a didactic poem like the Siraji, or religious verse like the Kisa cha Isa or Yusufu). Why did the authors of such literary texts seek to imbue their works with the political and moral values of these holy verses? and graphologically separate units of the utenḏi. A stanza consists of four lines (vipande, sg. kipande ‘piece’) of eight syllables each.     Ancient Afro-Asia Links: New Evidence from a Maritime Perspective Caesar Bita Abstract Historical records have shown that the East African coast was connected to ancient global trade networks. These early overseas contacts are evidenced by references to trading voyages in the early 1 st millennium AD and in the 11 th to 14 th century AD. During these periods, exports to India, China and the Persian Gulf included skins, horns, ivory and gold, whilst pottery, glass, textiles and beads were imported. Maritime archaeological studies have produced pottery, beads and shipwrecks that have showed links between East Africa and the Middle East, Indian sub-continent and China. Furthermore, historic Kenyan coastal settlements such as Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu were important port towns of call for merchant shipping, as they were strategically sited along busy sea-lanes. This paper examines this historical connection between ancient Kenyan coastal towns and the Asian continent. It explores results of previous and ongoing underwater archaeological research in Malindi and Lamu archipelago that has produced evidence of Asian cultural heritage.     Chapter 33 When Northern Swahili met southern Somali Derek Nurse Some twelve hundred years an incipient Northern Swahili community had moved up the Kenya coast as far as the Lamu Archipelago, where it came in contact with one or more Somali communities and the isolate Dahalo community. This paper initially uses phonological innovations in the early Swahili dialect to establish the general fact of contact, and then attempts to use sets of loanwords to identify the Somali source. Due to inadequate sources, it has proved difficult to identify the source(s) with certainty but initial contact with Tunni over some centuries, fol- lowed by later contact with Garre, is the most plausible explanation. The Tunni and Garre later exited, the latter leaving strong traces behind in Boni. 1 Purpose The target here is a micro-area in NE Kenya and SE Somalia.1 It was once home to where northern Swahili (including Mwiini2, the language of Brava) and some of its relatives are assumed to have emerged and developed, starting some 1200 BP, amidst a background of southern Somali communities. This has been suggested before (Nurse 1983; 1985) but not examined in such detail. The main differences here are the a) inclusion of Mwiini, b) inclusion of southern Somali (see the list in §2, below) other than Aweera = Boni, and c) stratigraphy of the Northern Swahili Dialects (ND). Requests that the State Party urgently carry out a full Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) which focuses on potential impacts on the OUV of the property following ICOMOS Guidance, covering not merely the first three berths of the Lamu Port, but for the full scope of the project; the HIA should focus not only on the possible impacts on the built heritage and natural environment of the property, but also on the social, cultural, and religious impacts to the property and its surrounding landscape and setting; The National Museums of Kenya through technical and financial support from UNESCO and the Netherlands Funds-In-Trust commenced an HIA exercise of the LAPSSET project which is expected to be completed by March 2014. A team of international experts led by Prof Karrel Baker (South Africa) has already made a site visit and held stakeholder meetings both with the local communities in Lamu and the national authorities in Nairobi with a view of collecting the relevant information that will inform the assessment exercise. The other members of the HIA experts team include Dr Ishanlosen Odiaua (Nigeria) and Prof George Abungu (Kenya) who is the local expert .Karalyn Monteil from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Africa desk also attended the field trips and stakeholder discussions .so far the HIA experts have met representatives of a host of Kenya government agencies concerned with the Lapsset project .The experts also had an opportunity to meet and engage community groups and representatives of the local communities around the Lamu archipelago.
