Studies in Avian Biology No. 19:272-280, 1999. SEASONAL MOVEMENTS AND CONSERVATION OF SEEDEATERS OF THE GENUS SPOROPHZIA IN SOUTH AMERICA Jose MARIA CARDOSO DA SILVA Abstract. Small seed-eating finches of the genus Sporophila, commonly called seedeaters, are among the most characteristic elements of South Americas’ grassland avifauna. Twenty-three species of Spa- rophila seedeaters were classified into three groups according to their seasonal movements. Fourteen species make long-distance movements between at least two major ecological regions in South Amer- ica, four species make intermediate to long-distance movements within a single ecological region, and five species make short-distance movements between adjacent habitats. The grasslands in the Cerrado region seem to be the most important wintering sites for most of the long-distance migrant Sporophila. Mapping the ranges of all threatened or near-threatened Sporophila species identified seven critical areas between southern coastal Colombia and southernmost Brazil. Creating reserves in these seven areas would protect at least one population of 23 Sporophilu species. Mapping the ranges of all species and well-marked subspecies with restricted ranges (350,000 square kilometers or less) identified nine critical areas (five of which were also identified by mapping threatened or near-threatened species) between northern South America and southernmost Brazil. Creating reserves in these nine areas would protect populations of 29 species or well-defined subspecies of Sporophila.The conservation of South American grasslands needs urgent action. The areas identified here are important grassland habitats that should be priority areas for organizations and agencies interested in grassland conservation. The Sayaca Tanager (Thraupis sayaca)is KEYWORDS a disturbance-tolerant species of high representativeness in plant- Neotropical; nesting frugivore networks, but information on its breeding biology is behaviour; parental care; scarce and often restricted to non-systematic surveys. We studied Thraupidae; urban bird the breeding biology of the T. sayaca, following 39 active nests in a periurban area of southeast Brazil during two breeding seasons (2017/2018, 2018/2019). The breeding season ranged from early September to middle December, and the nests were placed in native and exotic plants and human buildings (nest height above ground: 3.35 ± 1.73 m, mean ± SD). Only females incubated and brooded, but both adults built the nests, fed the nestlings, and removed their faecal sacs. -

By following a conscious strategy of integrating into non traditional markets and participating in the South American integration process, the country is opening doors to investors who will see opportunities in mining, a wide range of services, agriculture, cultural diversity, communications and value added products. By deepening the relationship with traditional trading partners with investment modalities and implementing a South South strategy with nontraditional partners, the economy of Suriname is being transformed into an emerging market. Suriname is a unique and safe place with the natural resources and geological characteristics of South America, the warmth of the Caribbean, a cultural diversity found nowhere else, and a constantly improving investment and business climate. The Government makes serious effort to make Suriname a better place do to business and will treat all investors alike, according to the Most Favorite Nation principles. -

Thanks to Mark Gawn for sharing his Blue Finch photo Bare-eyed Antbird was one of many highlights from this fun trip From the unparalleled biodiversity of the primeval Amazonian forest to the amazing abundance of wildlife in the Pantanal, this tour is always fascinating and great fun, and the superb lodges and tasty food make it especially enjoyable. This year was wetter than normal and we even got soaked once in the Pantanal, which is almost unheard of in July; the extra water definitely helped the overall bird numbers, so I certainly was not complaining, and it was still pretty darn dry compared to most South American tours. When I asked the group at the end of the trip for favorite sightings, everyone mentioned something totally different. There were so many memorable sightings that trying to pick one, or even a few, was almost futile. Some that were mentioned, in no real order, included: superb close-ups of Bare-eyed Antbirds at an antswarm at Cristalino (photo above); the “ginormous” Yellow Anaconda we saw crossing the Transpantanal Highway on our last full day, the minute and fabulous Horned Sungem from the Chapada, a superb encounter with the rare White-browed Hawk from one of the towers at Cristalino, our very successful hunt for the newly-described Alta Floresta Antpitta, and last but far from least, the magnificent Jaguar we saw for an extended period of time along the banks of the Três Irmãos River. -

This was one of an unusually accessible nesting pair near the Amazonian town of Limoncocha that provided a worthy add-on to The Andes Introtour in northwest Ecuador that preceded this (Jose Illanes/Tropical Birding Tours). Guided by Jose Illanes Birds in the photos within this report are denoted in RED, all photos were taken by the Tropical Birding guide. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Tropical Birding Trip Report Ecuador: HARPY EAGLE & East Andean Foothills Extension (Jan-Feb 2021) INTRODUCTION This custom extension trip was set up for one person who simply could not get enough of Ecuador…John had just finished Ecuador: The Andes Introtour, in the northwest of the country, and also joined the High Andes Extension to that tour, which sampled the eastern highlands too. However, he was still missing vast chunks of this small country that is bursting with bird diversity. Most importantly, he was keen to get in on the latest “mega bird” in Ecuador, a very accessible Harpy Eagle nest, near a small Amazonian town, which had been hitting the local headlines and drawing the few birding tourists in the country at this time to come see it. With this in mind, TROPICAL BIRDING has been offering custom add-ons to all of our Ecuador offerings (for 2021 and 2022) to see this Harpy Eagle pair, with only three extra days needed to see it. -

Duncan, an avowed antbird fanatic, contacted me after having come to the conclusion that he could no longer ignore the Rio Roosevelt given the recent batch of antbird splits and new taxa coming from the Madeira – Tapajós interfluvium. We had touched on the subject during his previous trips in Brazil, having also toyed with the idea of including an expedition-style extension to search for Brazil's biggest mega when it comes to antbirds – the Rondônia Bushbird. After some back and forth in the first two months of the following year, an e-mail came through from Duncan which ended thusly: “statement of the bleedin’ obvious: I would SERIOUSLY like to see the Bushbird.” At which point the game was on, so to speak. We began to organize an itinerary for the Rio Roosevelt with a dedicated expedition for Rondonia Bushbird. By mid-year things were coming together for a September trip, but in August we were de-railed by a minor health problem and two participants being forced to back out at the last minute. With a bushbird in the balance, we weren't about to call the whole thing off, and thus a new itinerary sans Roosevelt was hatched for 2015, an itinerary which called for about a week in the Tabajara area on the southern border of the Campos Amazônicos National Park, followed by a few days on the west bank of the rio Madeira to go for a couple of Duncan's targets in that area. -

Breeding Biology of the White-Winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus Candicans) in Eastern Paraguay

ABSTRACT: Breeding biology of the White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans) in eastern Paraguay. I present the first detailed description of the breeding biology of the White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans), based on data collected over three breeding seasons during 1998-2001 at Aguará Ñu, Canindeyú, eastern Paraguay. Male nightjars defended small territories situated on the upper slopes of ridgelines. Each territory contained one or more “display arenas” at which the male performed nuptial display flights. Aggregation indices confirmed that the primary display arenas of males were significantly clustered within the survey area. Within their territories, males apparently selected display arenas on the basis of their structural characteristics: mounds used as arenas were significantly lower and broader than random mounds. Males engaged in display activity from late August to early January. On average, males performed 0.54 ± 0.04 display flights per minute during nocturnal focal watches, but there was considerable intra-male variation in display rate. Following a burst of activity immediately after their arrival at display arenas at dusk, male display rate was best explained by ambient levels of moonlight. Males produced a previously undescribed insect-like “tik tik” call when inactive on their territories.
