The U.S. Department of Energy / National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Global Threat Reduction in cooperation with the China Atomic Energy Authority and International Atomic Energy Agency will host the “RERTR 2009 International Meeting on Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors.” The meeting is organized by Argonne National Laboratory, China Institute of Atomic Energy and Idaho National Laboratory and will be held in Beijing, China from November 1-5, 2009. This will be the 31st annual meeting in a series on the same general subject regarding the conversion of reactors within the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI).

Tour Code: BJ01 One day tour ’ anmen Square, , &

We will pick up participants from the hotel on departure time, and then drive to the largest city center square of the world - Tian'anmen Square for sightseeing. The visit will last 40 minutes. After that, we will drive to the Forbidden City, the largest group of ancient imperial palaces in the world with 500 years of history. We will visit the Forbidden City along its central axis from south to north for 2 hours. A 30 minutes drive will follow: we will be heading to the Temple of Heaven – the largest ancient imperial worship architectural group in the world. The visit will last 1 hour. A Chinese lunch (40 minutes) at a local restaurant will follow. In the afternoon, a 40 minutes drive will bring us to the Summer Palace, featuring the largest and most beautiful Chinese imperial garden. The visit will last 1.5 hours. Finally, we will be driving back to the hotel.

2 Tour Code: BJ02 One day tour to the Great Wall, & Sacred Way (or Spirit Way)

We will pick up participants from the hotel on departure time and then drive to the Great Wall (70 miles away from hotel, about one hour driving). We will do sightseeing at Juyongguan Pass, where the most famous part of the Great Wall is located. The Pass was named by the Emperor after the country first military pass. The visit will last 1.5 hours. A 30 minutes drive will take us to a local restaurant nearby the Ming Tombs for a Chinese lunch (Lunch duration: 50 minutes). After lunch a 20 minutes drive will take us to the thirteen Ming Tombs. The Sacred Way leads to the Tombs and it is lined with stone statues by which the ancient emperors wanted to hold a memorial ceremony for the ancestors. We will visit Dingling, the tomb of the (). Dingling is the only one of the Ming Dynasty Tombs to have been excavated. The visit will last 1.5 hours. Finally, we will return to the hotel before 06:00pm.

3 Tour Code: BJ03 Yonghe Lama Temple, Confucius Temple, Hutong Tour

We will pick up participants from the hotel on departure time, and then drive to the Yonghe Lama Temple, the largest Lama temple of Beijing. The temple used to be Emperor Yongzheng’s mansion when he still was a prince, and afterwards, was converted into a Lama Temple hosting Tibetan Buddhist monks from Tibet and Mongolia. During the visit (1 hour) you will have the opportunity to experience the Tibetan Buddhist culture. Then we will walk along the quiet and classical Cheng Xian Street and visit the famous Temple of Confucius. (40 minutes) A 30 minutes drive will take us to the Old Beijing ShiShaHai Lake. A special lunch in a typical Beijing resident’s house will be arranged for participants. After lunch, there will be the highlight of the tour: the Beijing Hutong tour. During the tour participants will enter in old Beijing quarters by rickshaw. The Hutong tour will last for 1.5 hours, and will be led by a local guide. It will cover a visit to the typical Chinese living quadrangles and many famous old buildings, such as the Bell Tower, etc. offering a glimpse of the life in the capital city as it has been for generations. When the Hutong tour is over, participants will be driven back to the hotel before 06:00pm.

4 Tour Code: BJ04 National Stadium (Bird's Nest & Water Cube), Summer Palace

We will pick up participants from hotel on departure time, and then drive to the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest. The Stadium has been the main track and field stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics and hosted the Opening and Closing ceremonies. Travelers can enter and visit the stadium closely. 3 Aquatics Centre, also known as the Water Cube or abbreviated [H2O] is an aquatics centre that was built alongside Beijing National Stadium in the for the 2009 Summer Olympics. The tour will last 1.5 hours. Later we will drive to a local restaurant to have a Chinese lunch (40 minutes). In the afternoon, there will be a 20 minutes drive to the Summer Palace, featuring the largest and most beautiful Chinese imperial garden. The visit will last 1.5 hours. Finally, we will be driving back to the hotel before 06:00pm.

5 Tour Code: BJ05 Beijing Roast Duck Dinner Banquet

We will pick up participants from the hotel on departure time and then head to the Roast Duck Restaurant to have a Dinner. Eating a Beijing Roast Duck is regarded as one of the two things you are absolutely supposed to do while in Beijing. The other one is climbing the Great Wall. After dinner, we will drive back to the hotel. The dinner tour will last 2 hours. For 10 participants (and over) the cost will be: RMB240 pp (about $36 USD pp)
