Vasuki , dignitaries on the dais, off the dais, reputed teaching luminaries, my dear ever-vibrant students, noble parents, well wishers, friends from the media, I feel immensely happy to welcome you all. I am proud to present before this august gathering, the report of the activities of our College during the academic year 2017-18, on this 67 th College Day Celebration. Success is not our ultimate destination but another record of our performance in our onward journey towards excellence. It is not mere existence but the exuberant endurance and perseverance that glorifies the record of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College. Braving many odds and tough days, our institution has accomplished benchmarking glory by empowering women through education. Inspired by our traditional values and ignited by a prophetic vision and the blessings of Goddess Akilandeswari, our revered founder Padmabhushan Sri. N. Ramaswami Iyyer, an eminent lawyer by profession, a philanthropist by deed, a visionary with a missionary zeal, founded Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in the year 1951 with 11 students, under a thatched building. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli 1 67 th College Day Annual Report 2017-2018 A well known Chinese proverb says, “If you plan for one year, plant rice, If you plan for ten years, plant a tree, If you plan for hundred years, educate people” Our founder had made the saying come true and by his indomitable spirit and untiring efforts, the institution has grown rapidly with the aim of enlightening and empowering women to equip them with the knowledge and life skills to face the challenges of the digital era by preserving our traditional moorings and cultural identity. At present, the institution has a strength of 4200 girls studying in various Arts, Science and Commerce degree courses. Our college offers 21 courses at the UG level, 14 at the PG level, 7 departments offer M.Phil and 8 departments offer Ph.D research degree. The college became one of the few colleges to acquire autonomous status in the year 1987 and in January 2004, it became one of the first seven colleges to get accredited by NAAC. It is now marching ahead towards excellence to keep itself on par with some of the best institutions nationally acclaimed as reputed ones. With 30 years of autonomy, our college has been accredited by NAAC with “A” grade in September 2012. Our academic programme focuses on combining theories with application of those theories in the curriculum. SPECIAL AWARDS BESTOWED Dr. M. Nalini, Head, Department of History, received Ilakkiya Peedam - Sivasankari Award on 01.12.2017 from Ilakkiya Peedam, Chennai and she has also been recognized as a Best Epigraphist by Women Welfare Organisations of Tiruchirappalli. Dr. C. Lalithambal, Assistant Professor, Department of Music, received Bharathi Tamil Selvar Award sponsored by Kolkata Tamil Mandram and Tamil Ayya Kalvi Kazhagam, Tiruvaiyaru for presenting research article on the topic “Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyarin Jadhagam - Oru Aaivu” in the 15 th Bharathi Tamil International Research Conference. Karthika received Young Researchers Forum Award for the best paper presentation in the International Conference on Graphene and Semiconductors, Illinois University, Chicago, USA. ACADEMIC TRIPS ABROAD Dr. S. Santhi, Associate Professor of Chemistry presented a paper on Highly Selective and Sensitive Dual Channel Schiff Base Chemosensors in the 5 th Annual International Conference of Chemistry at Athens, Greece from 17.07.2017 to 20.07.2017. She chaired a session in the Conference and also acted as a Resource Person in the Symposium on Future Development and Prospects of Engineering, Science Education and Research in a Global World-2 . PAPERS PRESENTED & BOOKS PUBLISHED As part of self development, knowledge enrichment and research – oriented activities, our teachers have presented 47 papers in International Seminars and 38 papers in National Level Seminars to their credit and have published 95 papers in reputed, peer reviewed International Journals. Dr. M. Nalini has published two books with ISBN, Varalaaru 27 & Pachchil Koyilkal in collaboration with Dr. M. Rajamanikanar Centre for Historical Research, Tiruchirappalli. Dr. M. Nalini & Dr. T. Sumitha are continuously contributing articles to Varalaaru, the International e-journal, a monthly Web Magazine for South Asian Studies. Every year the students of the Department of Tamil publish an In-house Journal entitled Manava Mani, exhibiting and documenting their creative talents and also a Sitrithazh named Pozhil. INTERNATIONAL DIGNITARIES ON CAMPUS Dr. S. Sachidanandam , Professor, International Higher Education Institute, France addressed the students of Department of Tamil on the topic European Languages and Tamil. Dr. S. Kumaran , Professor, Research Department of Tamil, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, spoke on the topic Tamil Culture of Tamilhians of Malaysia. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli 3 67 th College Day Annual Report 2017-2018 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Our College conducted a motivational lecture on Global Education for the teaching faculty on 17.01.2018 Dr. S. Venkatraman, a consultant of UNESCO elaborated on the changing roles of teachers and related the importance of Sustainable Development Goals which cover everything connected to human limits. He insisted the teachers to take up socially relevant research in various disciplines like urban living, preserving historical monuments, culture, traditional heritage sights and environment. He advised the teachers to build their profile and raise their academic standards by undertaking new and unexplored areas of research. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES OF STUDENT’S Cash Prize N. Vembu, I.M.A., English received II Prize, a cash award of Rs.7,000 in a District Level Competition conducted by Tamil Valarchi Thurai. S. Yashini, II B.Sc., Physics and S. Mahintha , I BSc., Chemistry have won a cash award of Rs.1,500 each, in a Tamil Poem Recitation Competition conducted by Murasoli Arakattalai. N. Sushma , II M.Sc., Physics and S. Akshya , III B.Sc., Chemistry have won the first prize together with a cash award of Rs.2,000 in a Quiz Competition, S. Mehavarshini , I B.A., Music has won the first prize and a cash prize of Rs.1,500 in Solo Folk Song Competition organized by Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College on 12.01.2018. District Level Prize Won K. Anandavalli, II B.C.A., (SF) received first prize in the District Level Essay Competition in connection with M.G.R. Centenary Celebration. Overall Trophy Winners Our College students have won the Overall Shield in the IGFEST held at Srimathi Indra Gandhi College, Trichy on 19.08.2017. Chemistry students bagged the Overall Winner Shield in the Intercollegiate Chemfest-2017 held at Holy Cross College on 08.12.2017. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli 4 67 th College Day Annual Report 2017-2018 Students of Department of English won the Runner-up Shield in the Intercollegiate Competitions held at Aiman College of Arts and Science, Trichy on 10.02.2018. Students of Computer Science (Unaided) won the Runner-up Shield among 48 colleges in the Intercollegiate Technical Symposium conducted by Jamal Mohammed College, Trichy on 14.02.2018.
