THE KANAKA AND THEIR ISLES OF SANDWICH And yet — in fact you need only draw a single thread at any point you choose out of the fabric of life and the run will make a pathway across the whole, and down that wider pathway each of the other threads will become successively visible, one by one. — Heimito von Doderer, DIE DÂIMONEN HDT WHAT? INDEX HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SANDWICH ISLANDS “Sandwich Islanders” in Chapter 1, paragraph 3a of WALDEN: Henry Thoreau referred to the Kanaka under the name currently in use in New England: WALDEN: I would fain say something, not so much concerning the Chinese and Sandwich Islanders as you who read these pages, who are said to live in New England; something about your condition, especially your outward condition or circumstances in this world, in this town, what it is, whether it is necessary that it be as bad as it is, whether it cannot be improved as well as not. I have travelled a good deal in Concord; and every where, in shops, and offices, and fields, the inhabitants have appeared to me to be doing penance in a thousand remarkable ways. What I have heard of Brahmins sitting exposed to four fires and looking in the face of the sun; or hanging suspended, with their heads downward, over flames; or looking at the heavens over their shoulders “until it becomes impossible for them to resume their natural position, while from the twist of the neck nothing but liquids can pass into the stomach;” or dwelling, chained for life, at the foot of a tree; or measuring with their bodies, like caterpillars, the breadth of vast empires; or standing on one leg on the tops of pillars, –even these forms of conscious penance are hardly more incredible and astonishing than the scenes which I daily witness.

  • The Surrender of Galveston and the Battle to Win It Back: Russell Cushman’S Battle of Galveston Mural
THE SURRENDER OF GALVESTON AND THE BATTLE TO WIN IT BACK: RUSSELL CUSHMAN’S BATTLE OF GALVESTON MURAL BY BLAKE R. RICHARDS 1ST PLACE FRESHMAN CATEGORY Close your eyes and imagine the icy breeze chapping your skin. It is New Year’s Eve, 1862. The wind is whipping across Galveston Bay and pushing the water up on the deck of the cottonclad steamer, CS Bayou City. Hell on earth has come to Galveston, Texas. The city is burning as Union Navy ships get closer and closer to Kuhn’s Wharf to pelt the Confederate Troops with cannon fire. The Confederate Troops hope the blue belly sailors come a little closer; they have a surprise waiting them. “The Confederate Army has taken field artillery and used the freight elevator and moved it to the third floor of the Hendley Building to defend Galveston” (1). Up until now, there had not been Confederate field artillery positioned to reach the Union Navy ships. Open your eyes. That chill is just the air conditioner blowing inside of the Museum of Southern History at Houston Baptist University. It’s easy to let your imagination run a little wild here. As you stand beside a life size cannon from the Civil War movie Glory, you face a stunning image. Texas artist Russell Cushman has created a thirty-foot mural that realistically depicts The Battle of Galveston. The mural is the centerpiece of a life size diorama. If you stand behind the cannon it’s easy to imagine feeling the icy breeze hit your face. You can feel like you are on the deck of the CS Bayou City.

Approved. By Trevia Wooster Beverly With the assistance of Garnett Cleveland, Jr. and Bert Marshall Originally known as the Chubb Shipyard, this site is important not only to Confederate activity in Harris County, but also to the naval and industrial history of the state of Texas. Location of the subject marker will be in Bayland Park, Hwy. 146, Baytown, Texas. It will be on the opposite bank from the original site due to accessibility. Trevia Wooster Beverly, a Baytown native, is Secretary for the Harris County Historical Commission. << [email protected] >> Garnett Cleveland, Jr. has written the only known work on the Confederate Naval Works at Goose Creek.1 Bert Marshall, local historian, is the owner of the website OurBaytown.com << http://www.OurBaytown.com >> 1 “Confederate Naval Works of Goose Creek,” Baytown Vignettes, One Hundred and Fifty Years in the History of a Texas Gulf Coast Community, edited by John Britt & Muriel Tyssen (Baytown: Lee College, 1992). THE CONFEDERATE NAVAL YARD ON GOOSE CREEK In 1854 the two Chubb brothers, Thomas Henry and John, purchased approximately fifty-six acres out of the old William Scott2 League on the east bank of Goose Creek3 at the mouth of Tabbs Bay from Mrs. Mary Jones, wife of Republic of Texas president Anson Jones. It was here they established their shipyard, later to become the Confederate Naval Yard. The Texas shipping industry was quite modest until the Civil War when the Confederate government encouraged Texans to engage in any kind of manufacturing venture that would contribute to military needs.

  • Acts of Remembrance and Commemoration
“Baptized by Saltwater”: Acts of Remembrance and Commemoration Surrounding the USS Block Islands, CVE-21 & CVE-106 by Benjamin J. Hruska A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Victoria Thompson, Chair Jannelle Warren-Findley Kyle Longley ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY MAY 2012 ABSTRACT The Second World War has been portrayed as the central event for understanding the history of America in the 20 th Century. This dissertation will examine the acts of commemoration and remembrance by veterans who served on the escort carriers, USS Block Island , CVE-21 & CVE-106. Acts of remembrance and commemoration, in this case, refer to the authorship of memoirs, the donation of symbolic objects that represent military service to museums, and the formation of a veteran’s organization, which also serves as a means of social support. I am interested in the way stories of the conflict that fall outside the dominant narratives of the Second World War, namely the famous battles of land, sea, and air, have been commemorated by the veterans who were part of them. Utilizing primary source material and oral histories, I examine how acts of remembrance and commemoration have changed over time. An analysis of the shifting meanings sheds light on how individual memories of the war have changed, in light of the history of the larger war that continues to ignore small ships and sea battles. ii Dedicated to Dr. John Allen Gable for being there at the beginning, and Dr. Noel Stowe for being there at the end.
