Katarzyna Więckowska* Silence and Fecundity in Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/LC.2020.037 Abstract: In the final chapter ofWriting and Difference titled “Ellipsis”, Jacques Derrida describes lack as the element that is constitutive of meaning – what is missing from the book is “invisible and undeterminable”, yet it “redoubles and consecrates” it, so that “all meaning is altered by this lack” (1978: 296). Following Derrida’s cue that writing “is of an elliptical essence” (ibid: 296), I focus on lacks and silences in Carmen Maria Machado’s short-story collection Her Body and Other Parties (2017) and their contribution to meaning. Machado’s tales uncover new meanings in well- known stories and depict experiences that are usually silenced, thereby highlighting the othering potential of story-telling and stressing the interdependencies between worlds and stories. In this essay, I refer to Emmanuel Levinas’s work on ethics, Maurice Blanchot’s writings on the relation 81 between literature and ethics, and Jacques Derrida’s account of haunting to argue that the stories not only demonstrate that any text is made through what is missing, absent or different, but that they also establish an ethical relation with the reader based on shared vulnerability and uncertainty. Palmer Associate Professor of English (Committee Member) LIVING ENTANGLEMENTS AND THE ECOLOGICAL THOUGHT IN THE WORKS OF PAUL KINGSNORTH, TOM MCCARTHY, AND ALI SMITH By Garrett Joseph Peace A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Master of Arts: English The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chattanooga, Tennessee May 2021 ii ABSTRACT In my thesis, I use the work of Donna Haraway, Timothy Morton, Karen Barad, and Anna Tsing to explore how three contemporary British novelists—Paul Kingsnorth, Tom McCarthy, and Ali Smith—deal with the representational and ethical challenges of writing about nature and climate change within the Anthropocene. The question of how to live and write now is a prominent thread in all their works, which show, in both form and content, the entanglements of ecology, materiality, locality, nationality, and personal identity. In doing so, their stories enable readers to engage with what Morton calls the “ecological thought,” i.e. “a practice and process of becoming fully aware of how human beings are connected with other beings,” and provoke us, as Haraway puts it, “to be truly present . as mortal critters entwined in myriad unfinished configurations of places, times, matters, meanings.” iii DEDICATION For my parents, Robin and James. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As many of the writers present in these pages show us, to be human is to exist in a state of interconnection. -

You have a key, so you’ve permitted yourself to stay behind. After all, the painting arrived just before closing, and you’re excited to get a glimpse of the missing de Wit. Your friend Lucy, an art historian in Washington, is insistent that you look at the painting. “You’ve got to come back from all of this, somehow,” she’d said on the phone last week. “And how better than to get a good look at ‘De rouw ruimte’? It’s really something to behold.” She’s right, of course. You do need to come back, because the way your boss, Phillip, is looking at you, you have a needling suspicion that he’s considering firing you. The 15th International Gothic Association Conference Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois July 30 - August 2, 2019 Speakers, Abstracts, and Biographies A NICOLE ACETO “Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut”: The Terror of Domestic Femininity in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House Abstract From the beginning of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, ordinary domestic spaces are inextricably tied with insanity. In describing the setting for her haunted house novel, she makes the audience aware that every part of the house conforms to the ideal of the conservative American home: walls are described as upright, and “doors [are] sensibly shut” (my emphasis). This opening paragraph ensures that the audience visualizes a house much like their own, despite the description of the house as “not sane.” The equation of the story with conventional American families is extended through Jackson’s main character of Eleanor, the obedient daughter, and main antagonist Hugh Crain, the tyrannical patriarch who guards the house and the movement of the heroine within its walls, much like traditional British gothic novels. Using Freud’s theory of the uncanny to explain Eleanor’s relationship with Hill House, as well as Anne Radcliffe’s conception of terror as a stimulating emotion, I will explore the ways in which Eleanor is both drawn to and repelled by Hill House, and, by extension, confinement within traditional domestic roles. This combination of emotions makes her the perfect victim of Hugh Crain’s prisonlike home, eventually entrapping her within its walls. I argue that Jackson is commenting on the restriction of women within domestic roles, and the insanity that ensues when women accept this restriction. -
