As I have stated in previous trails, I trust this one will also help to stimulate interest in the heritage of our local community and encourage residents to explore it in more detail John O’Neill Introduction Much of the manor of Shevington from earliest recorded times remained a sparsely populated area whose ownership was largely in the shared possession of prominent landed families. As late as Tudor times there were as few as 21 families across the entire area, only 69 by the reign of George III and less than 1,000 inhabitants by the time of Queen Victoria’s accession in 1837. It was still under 2,000 at the 1931 census. The most significant rise occurred between 1951 when it reached 3,057 and up to 8,001 by 1971. At the last Census in 2011 the population had risen to 10,247. Even today, just beyond the current building-line, it can clearly be observed from the M6 motorway, Shevington’s rural landscape of open countryside, woods, streams and ponds remains to a large extent as it was, prior to the short-term local effects of industrial activity from the mid-18th century to the 1950s/60s together with local farming, although the latter is less evident today with the diminution of grazing flocks and herds, than it once was only fifty years ago.

    NOTES ON THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. WILFRED, STANDISH By William Frederick Price Read I7th November 1904 INTRODUCTION,. RAPT in the mist of unwritten history there W is some tradition that long before the coming of the Normans, Standish was a fortified station or camp of some importance. Lying, as it does, on an elevated plateau 370 feet above sea- level, on the direct route of the Roman road between Wigan and Walton-le-Dale, there may be some truth in the tradition. The fact that the Romans were acquainted with the use of coal is now fully established, and so great an authority on mining as Professor Hull considers there is good evidence that they discovered and worked the Arley seam which crops out along the banks of the river Douglas between Standish and Wigan. Years ago, while driving a tunnel to divert the course of the river, this coal seam of 6 feet in thickness was found to have been mined in a manner hitherto altogether unknown. "It was excavated into a series of polygonal chambers, with vertical walls opening into each other by short passages, and, on the whole, presenting on a ground plan something of the appearance of a honeycomb. The outbreak management surge plan has been updated and activated. • The over-60s weekly incidence rate for Wigan is the highest of the 10 Greater Manchester areas. • Wigan is similar to the Greater Manchester average and lower than the North West average for rate of new cases in the latest 7 days. • As at 21st September, there were 19 COVID-positive patients in Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh hospitals. • There have been 2 COVID–19 related deaths registered in Wigan so far in the latest week th (w/e 10 September). Weekly Cases and Rates COVID-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and sending them to laboratories around the UK to be tested. If the test is positive, this is a referred to as a lab-confirmed case. Pillar 1 refers to tests that have been carried out in labs run by Public Health England or the NHS (usually for inpatients and frontline workers in the NHS), Pillar 2 refers to tests delivered by commercial partners (usually for the general public). In a letter dated 10 November 1978, West Lancashire District Council requested us to review the boundary between the district of Vest Lancashire and the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, with a view to bringing all the houses in a housing development known as the Millbank Estate within the area of one authority. At present the estate, which lies off Mill Lane, Appley Bridge, straddles the boundary between the parish of Wrightington in West Lancashire district and county of Lancashire, and the parish of Shevington in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and the Greater Manchester county. 2. The anomaly in the boundary arose from the diverting and culverting on another line of a part of Calico Brook, which originally formed part of the boundary between the two counties. The estate was erected on the area formerly dissected by the brook. 3. As the need to consider a boundary adjustment had arisen from an alteration to a water course, we first considered whether it would be appropriate to deal with this case under Section 73 of "the Local Government Act 1972 as had been originally requested by the West Lancashire District Council rather than under Section 48(4)* We decided to seek the advice of your Department on this point and also to ask West Lancashire District Council for further information to help us decide whether a principle area boundary review would be more appropriate.

    Wigan Borough Public Health Training Prospectus 2019 Introduction Wigan Borough is located on the western edge of Greater Manchester and covers an area of approximately 77 square miles. While Wigan is the largest town in the Borough, Leigh is of similar size. There are further smaller towns and villages. Wigan Borough has a history of mining and manufacturing, and many of the towns started off as settlements to service these functions. Despite this heritage Wigan Borough has a sizable amount of green space. A map of the Borough is shown in Figure 1. Main population centres within Wigan Borough Population Wigan Borough has the second highest population of the ten Boroughs in Greater Manchester. Its population is 324,650 (Mid-2017 ONS Population Estimates, revised in March 2018). Figure 2 shows the distribution of the population by age group and sex. Figures 3 and 4 show the same but as projected for 2022 and 2027 respectively (2016-based ONS Population Projections). There has been a steady increase in the number of people aged 65+ within Wigan Borough as a result of increasing life expectancy (see Appendix, Figure A1). The proportion of people aged 65+ in 2017 was 18.8%. This is projected to rise to 20.9% by 2025, to 23.0% by 2030, and to 26.2% by 2040. However, predictive accuracy weakens the further one projects into the future. The trend in the number of people in Wigan Borough by sex for the 65+ age group is shown in Figure A2 in the Ap- pendix.
