R represents the average number of onward infections that will be generated by a single infectious individual. R tells us if the epidemic is getting bigger (>1) or smaller (<1) but not how large it is, and therefore should not be used as a sole indicator of the current threat posed by an epidemic. It cannot be measured directly so there is always some uncertainty around its exact value. What is a growth rate? The growth rate reflects how quickly the number of infections are changing day by day It is an approximation of the change of number infections each day. If the growth rate is greater than zero (+ positive), then the disease will grow. If the growth rate is less than zero (- negative) then the disease will shrink. Both the R number and Growth rate are published at Regional level. Please see the table on the next page for the latest regional and national figures. Wigan's Exceedance Level - RED The PHE Joint Modelling Cell provides 'exceedance' data to Local Authorities – this is a summary of the combined Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 COVID-19 cases in the previous 14 days. A Red/Amber/Green rating is then applied to assist in identifying those Local Authorities for which there is evidence that recent numbers of COVID-19 cases are not following the previous time trend. This rating is based solely on the results of the analyses and should be used alongside local intelligence. Wigan's current rating is RED. The exceedance report should not be considered in isolation but in context alongside other factors such as the recent total number of cases, changes in the local testing regime and local hotspot analysis. Source: Public Health England Contact Tracing People who test positive for COVID-19 are contacted by the Test & Trace system to make sure they self-isolate and to identify people they have been in contact with. Complex cases (e.g. if they live in a care home or have been in contact with a school) are escalated to “Level 1” teams, who provide a local response; straight forward cases are handled by the national system. As at 21st September, 93% of all contacts who have been escalated to Wigan's Level 1 teams for a local response have been successfully managed. Source: Public Health England Wigan° Council Schools Schools currently report all confirmed cases of COVID-19 either directly to the Department for Education, or to the Wigan Council Health Protection and Civil Contingencies Team. Both will provide schools with advice on identifying close contacts of confirmed cases and support with making decisions on further infection control measures. The information currently available relating to schools with confirmed cases is made available below but should not be considered as an authoritative list. The inclusion of a school in the below list strictly relates to where there has been at least one confirmed case within a school amongst either staff or pupils within the given time period.
