Prayer against COVID-19

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN Secretary’s Message – April 2020

“We May Encounter Many Defeats But We Must Not Be Defeated.” – Maya Angelou Hello to all RCCPC Rotarians & Spouses!

Today is the Holy Monday and the last Monday prior to Easter Sunday; it is the second day of Holy Week after Palm Sunday. According to tradition, Holy Monday is the day on which Jesus cleansed the temple, was praised by local children, and cursed the fig tree (Matthew 21:12– 22). It is the day following Palm Sunday, when Jesus came to Jerusalem in the triumphal entry (Matthew 21:1–11). Sacrifice, mortification, and suffering do not come easily. As we prepare our souls to accept and surrender to the weight of His love before entering into the lighthearted celebration of the Easter season, it behooves us to pause each day with some degree of solemn appreciation for him who was glorified by way of surrender and death. Last Monday Online Meeting, we had talked on the donation of 10 boxes of 450ml Alcohol to Bayanihan for the help of the Frontliners to combat Covid-19. Thanks to Golden Star Manning thru Treas. John Sulay for the donation of 10 boxes of 450ml Alcohol in addition to the Club donation. Last Wednesday, April 1, 2020, the above items were delivered to the Bayanihan Cebu Office and was properly documented. Thanks to the following Rotarians who made their online attendance, namely: Pres. Jun Falcon, Treas. John Sulay, Rtn. Lester delos Santos, Rtn. Jun Vinculado and yours truly. Tonight, we still have another online meeting thru Zoom App. Kindly use the same meeting ID and Password. Hope to see you all tonight.

Impact on Economy Retail sector

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the retail sector. Retail stores across the world have seen product demand exceeding supply for many consumables, resulting in empty retail shelves. In Australia, the pandemic has provided a new opportunity for daigou shoppers to re-sell into the China market. "The virus crisis, while frightening, has a silver lining". Some retailers are looking at contactless home delivery.

Shopping centers around the world responded by reducing hours or closing down temporarily in response. As of 18 March 2020, the footfall to shopping centers fell by up to 30%, with significant impact in every continent. Simon Property Group became the first major US-based mall operator to close all centers on 18 March, with government-mandated closures in UAE, Italy, Germany, Spain, Brazil and Austria as of 23 March. PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN

In light of the public health situation in which includes afflicted regions where retail sectors deemed non-essential have been ordered closed for the interim, Diamond Comic Distributors announced on March 24, 2020 a full suspension of distributing published material and related merchandise as April 1, 2020 until further notice. As Diamond has a near-monopoly on printed comic book distribution, this is described as an "extinction- level event" that threatens to drive the entire specialized comic book retail sector out of business with that one move. As a result, publishers like IDW Publishing and Dark Horse Comics have suspended publication of their periodicals while DC Comics is exploring distribution alternatives including an increased focus on online retail of digitalmaterial.

Meanwhile, our PORTSIDE E-bulletin will still be posted at our Viber Group and the District Website at www.rotarydistrict3860.com. We encourage all members to post your concerns and suggestions in our Viber Group account. Online interactions thru social media or group chats in the meantime will be adopted in lieu of actual physical meetings.

According to Kelly McGillis, “Life is a journey and it's about growing and changing and coming to terms with who and what you are and loving who and what you are.”

That’s all for now, keep safe and stay healthy my dear RCCPC Rotarians and Spouses to flatten the curve. God bless us all! PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN

President’s Message – April 2020 Today in 1901, Cebuano general Arcadio Maxilom issues a manifesto urging “courage and constancy” despite the news received of the capture of General Aguinaldo. He says that the war against the Spaniards should continue. Also, today in 1945, fighting for the liberation of Cebu from the Japanese continues. And, lastly, today in 1946, Manuel Roxas is elected Philippine President over Sergio Osmeña, Sr.

Cebu City is now on its 11th-day Enhance Community Quarantine or ECQ and I am hoping that everyone is safe and sound despite the recent Philippine record surpassing 3,000 confirmed cases while globally it also surpassed the 1Million mark.

We have just started observing also our religious season of Lent, which Palm Sunday – 5 April 2020 - opened its weeklong activities. On this moment of crisis, we have to embrace our faith and trust in God especially that our country haven’t yet flatten its statistics. So far, globally, only China was able to maintain its graph effectively.

Like other Rotary clubs within our area, RCCPC was able to have another online Club gathering last Monday evening, 30 March 2020. Thus, I am encouraging everyone to install Zoom in your phone or computer so that you can join us virtually and enjoy the fun!

For Rotary community efforts against COV-19, a lot of Rotary projects within Area 1 were undertaken to help and support our government - above all to our front-liners. Within , clubs mostly donated alcohol, face masks/shields and PPEs aside from foods and other essentials for our volunteers. For our RCCPC, we are grateful that last Tuesday, PAG/IPP Boy Unabia gave 10 gallons of alcohol while, last Thursday, offered another 50 pcs of face masks to medical volunteers thru our Area 1. Also, last Wednesday, PP Edward Go of Phil. Span Asia Carrier Corp. - thru the initiative and efforts of IPP Rodien Paca and Dir. Robert Barquilla – donated two container vans to Mayor Edgardo Labella (for Cebu City Government). These container vans are to be transformed as quarantine facility at Block 27 – North Reclamation Area, Cebu City. Likewise on the same Wednesday, Treas. John Sulay and his company – Golden Star Manning and Ship Management, was able to facilitate on behalf of our Club – 10 boxes of alcohol (450ml @ 480 bottles), which were brought to Don Vicente Sotto Hospital extension facility at Sacred Heart School compound at General Maxilum Avenue, Cebu City. To those who were not mentioned here (including those who are currently quarantined at home), I know that you too – being Rotarian by spirit - contributed in your own decent way to reinforce assistance and relief. Thank you very much! “God will repay each person according to what they have done.” (Romans 2:6). PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN
