Our special guest speaker on 24th July, at A HELPING HAND FROM THE SHED 10am is Miriam Miller, a founding member of the Australian Rugmakers Guild. Miriam holds workshops at Narrawilly Farm in Milton, teaching the Proggy rugging method that uses recycled fabric, hessian and yarn to make rugs with wonderful colour and texture. Hear how Miriam got interested in rug making and how this interest has taken her around the world teaching and learning more about this craft. PLEASE COME ALONG FOR A GREAT MORNING. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! The venue is Wesley Hall at the Uniting Church, 77 Albert Street. BERRY COMMUNITY LIBRARY Winter is a great time to curl up in a warm, comfortable chair, and lose yourself in one of the great books from Berry Community Library. One of our lovely Library volunteers has estimated that we have over 3,000 books now on our shelves. All donated by our Berry com-munity! That makes for a great selection for you to borrow. If you have trouble fi lling in forms on the Internet or downloading forms and printing them out, we have set up a computer and printer to help you complete your task and people on hand to help. BRANCH ACTIVITIES Berry Branch has been very busy lately. We helped the Berry Masonic Village Auxiliary with Devonshire Teas at the Celtic Festival which was greatly appreciated by the Masonic Village group. This was a very successful day, with approximately $2370.00 being raised to help the Auxiliary. The stall we held at the Uniting Church Market Day in May was a great opportunity to fraternise with and fi nd out about other local organisations and raise money for Red Cross. Despite the inclement weather, it is anticipated this event will be held again next year which will be of great benefi t to the community groups of Berry. From the raffl e and sale of goods we raised $242.90 for Red Cross. We also found out at our meeting that our Anzac Biscuit stall raised over $1,000. We hope our generous buyers enjoyed their Anzac Day just a little bit more for them. This amount was added to by two generous donations to Red Cross by members of the community, one for $1,000 and the other for $70. Red Cross greatly appreciated these donations. EVENTS COMING UP Red Cross Zone Conference will be held on 24th July, and Berry Branch will be well represented there. This is where we coordinate with other branches in our zone and catch up on events happening in NSW Red Cross in general. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th July 2018 at 1.30pm in the Uniting Church Wesley Hall. All are welcome, and this could be a good time to fi nd out about Red Cross as the past year’s activities and events will be reviewed and the Election of the offi ce bearers for 2018-19 will occur.

JULY 2018 The Town Crier - Page 21 The Berry & District Historical Society The Berry Cottage Hospital - Berry Health Care in the 1890s MuseumMuseum In 1895 a cottage hospital known as the Berry Hospital was built on the corner 135135 Queen StreeStreett of Pulman Street and the old Princes Highway. The building was originally an old store, post offi ce and telegraph station and was leased from the Berry Estate by BERRY 25253535 James Wilson. David Berry deemed that a hospital was sorely needed by the tenants on his estate. He subscribed to Sydney hospital which entitled him to send a poor patient there for treatment. However, the roads were bad and the trip by boat took eight hours and could not easily be endured by a sick individual. When David Berry died in 1889 and he bequeathed £100,000 in his will for a hospital. Unfortunately, there were insuffi cient funds in the David Berry Estate so John Hay, the executor of the estate, built the hospital at his own expense. The cottage hospital was used from 1895 to 1907 for private and nonpaying patients. It had 6 beds for men and 3 for women, plus a cot; an outpatients section and a dispensary. Those suffering from an infectious disease were treated in a cottage next door to the main building. This latter cottage in Pulman Street, burnt down completely in 1896. The rather grim addition of a morgue, was built by the local undertaker in 1898.
